1 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING PROGRAM APPROVED HUMANITIES/SOCIAL SCIENCE ELECTIVES EFFECTIVE AUGUST Humanities and Social Science Electives are offered as part of the Mechanical Engineering Curriculum where students can meet various accreditation goals set forth by the ME assessment process, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology s (ABET) Criteria. ABET is the program s accrediting parent organization. 2. The objective of the Mechanical Engineering Curriculum is to provide students with a broad, well-rounded education, exposing them not only to the required technical knowledge but also to traditional Humanities and Social Sciences offerings. This is accomplished in four phases: a. The first consists of requiring specific courses which support not only the program curriculum, but support The Citadel s core curriculum objectives. They are included by course number in the Course of Study section of The Citadel Catalog. b. The second phase is a selection of a History and English sequence. A student must take either the Western Civilization sequence, HIST 103 and HIST 104, or must take the World History sequence, HIST 105 and HIST 106. Students in the Honors Program can take HONR 103 and HONR 104. In addition, a student must take ENGL 101, ENGL 102, ENGL 201 or HONR 201, and one course in Section I, English Elective. c. The third phase consists of requiring the taking of one core curriculum offering. This requirement is identified in the Course of Study Section of the catalog as Social Science Core Course. The choices are listed in Section II, Core Curriculum Electives. d. The fourth phase consists of requiring the taking of one additional Humanities or Social Science Elective. This requirement is identified in the catalog as consisting of one "Nondepartmental Elective" involves the selection of a course of interest to the student from Section III, Other Electives. 1
