Discussion to focus on the relevance for journalists and media. 2 :30 Topic: UN Multi-country Study on findings from the UN Multi-country Study on Men and Violence, Asia and the Pacific by Emma Fulu A new UNDP, UNFPA, UN Women and UNV study of 10,000 men and 3,000 women across the Asia-Pacific region offers new insight as to why some men use violence against women and others do not, for the first time hearing from men themselves. The study found that there are many differing factors that influence men s use of violence against women but those that stand out relate to inequality between men and women, accepted ways of being a man that condone violence and men s own experiences of violence, especially as children. Through policies and programmes that reduce these factors and the societal forces that influence them, we can decrease levels of violence against women and prevent it from happening in the future. PROBLEM Men s use of violence against women throughout the Asia-Pacific region is widespread. A new study of 10,000 men in nine sites across six countries conducted by four UN agencies UNDP, UN Women, UNFPA and UNV revealed: 25-80% of men surveyed reported using physical or sexual violence against a female partner in their lifetime 10-62% of men surveyed reported perpetrating rape against a woman or girl in their lifetime For the first time, evidence from men themselves reveal that men who use violence against women are more likely to: Have gender inequitable practices use controlling behavior in relationships, have had multiple sexual partners and engaged in transactional sex Experience violence themselves having been abused as children, witnessed their mother being abused, or experience sexual violence as adults Suffer from depression, substance abuse and/or be involved in gangs. These all reflect inequalities between men and women in society and ways of being a man that celebrate toughness, violence and dominance over women. The range of rates of violence show that while many men surveyed have used violence, many others have not, reflecting different patterns of ways of being a man, including those that are oriented towards more equality and peace. SOLUTION To prevent and decrease widespread rates of violence against women we need policies and programmes that focus on changes in relationships, communities and institutions to: Promote caring and healthy relationships based on equality and fairness Address the impact of violence and neglect on children and find ways to prevent it Champion peaceful, caring, and healthy ways of being a man to promote positive role models The solutions are not the only things that need to be done to prevent violence against women and girls. This is what our study shows as priority areas but these things need to be done as part of a comprehensive approach to ending violence against women. CALLS TO ACTION Help prevent violence by understanding and addressing the underlying factors associated with violence in different communities, and (insert message per audience) promoting equal relationships, safe and nurturing childhoods and education that encourages positive values of what it is to be a man associated with equality and non violence.

3 :30 Coffee Break 15:30 17:30 Topic: Gender-based and Sexual Violence and the Social Structure Understand how social institutions such as the law, criminal justice system, public health system, education, the media, and so on condone and perpetuate gender-based and sexual violence in society; Guided discussion of definition, forms and structural causes of SGBV. Using the Web of Structural Violence Activity for experiential learning, participants will engage and understand more clearly the myriad different forms of violence and discriminatory practices based on gender (direct violence); and show how different social institutions, not least the media, contribute to the perpetuation of SGBV in society (structural violence), and opportunities for positive change, with special focus on media as an institution and the MDGs as indicators. (To be confirmed) DAY TWO 12 September 2013 Reproductive and Sexual Health Rights and Inequalities Re-cap of Day One Topic: Sexual and reproductive health and rights in Asia and the Pacific Overview of the current state of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Asia and the Pacific; identify areas of the most pressing inequalities in access Brief presentation on the current state of sexual and reproductive health in Asia and the Pacific, eliciting country specific issues from participants. Facilitated small group discussions to identify major barriers to equality in access with reporting back and synthesis in the large group. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A session and a facilitated discussion on different sectors responsibilities for ensuring rights and access in humanitarian emergencies. Using the Barometer of Values experiential learning tool, participants will be asked to articulate their opinions on different aspects of the relationship between youth, sexuality and the media. Guided debrief on the impacts of socialization on individuals attitudes and actions followed by a brief presentation of the current trends in youth and sexuality in Asia and the Pacific. DAY THREE 13 September 2013 Gender and Global Development Priorities Re-cap of Day Two Topic: Media, Gender and Development Learning Objectives: Understand the current issues and themes in gender and development, including progress and challenges in meeting MDG 5 on reducing maternal mortality; analyze current development issues from a gender perspective Using a game show format, interactive and participatory review of the MDGs and current trends in gender and development. Reference Materials: Sexual and Reproductive Health for All by UNFPA, Coffee Break Topic: Gender equality and demographic changes Increase awareness of the linkages between women s rights, reproductive and sexual health and rights, and sustainable development; develop a gender perspective on issues of urbanization and population ageing Small group work with case studies on urbanization and population challenges to assess the level of gender consciousness in how they are written. Small groups will analyze the consequences and impacts when gendered perspectives are missing, and the different possible approaches and outcomes when gender is considered.
