1 julia jowett Primary School Workshop Menu Canvas Art: Collage, Print and Stitch. (Full day workshop) Inspired by a particular project, topic, story or artist you will collage together papers, photographs, patterned fabrics and your own hand drawn and painted imagery. Through markmaking, painting, cutting, sticking and playful composition you will explore your theme on an A5 sized card surface. Your finished collage will be photocopied onto specialist heat transfer papers allowing you to print your paper design onto fabric. You will be shown how to stretch the fabric across a frame and fix into place to make a canvas. Enjoy working finishing details into your now stretched fabric artwork - layering thread-bound wires and using hand embroidered stitches to create unusual mixed media additions to your contemporary piece of Canvas Art. This is a flexible workshop that produces a fantastic display of sophisticated artwork from the classroom and is adaptable for any project brief or topic. Previously covered Canvas Art Workshop subjects at primary level include - Botanicals, All about me, Africa, William Morris and Pattern Repeats in Design; and at secondary level, themes of Heritage and Community.

2 Fabric Wall Hangings (Full day or Half day workshop) This textile based collage workshop is the perfect introduction to designing and creating colourful textile artworks using cloth and stitch. We start this workshop by playing with pencils and drawing simple motif ideas, imagery and compositions to create a narrative or theme for your wall piece. We will talk about colour palettes and accent colours before selecting treasures, fabrics and threads to use to build your design. Inspired by your drawings and design ideas, you will cut shapes from fabric and learn how to attach them to a fabric ground using basic appliqué and Bondaweb methods. You will use stranded embroidery cottons, a sewing hoop and a sewing needle to learn simple hand embroidery techniques to decorate your fabric hanging. You will be encouraged to explore running stitch, backstitch, cross stitch and chain stitches - with an introduction to basic couching and some embellishment ideas for you to try. This workshop is aimed at a primary school audience or to participants that are new to hand embroidered textiles. As a family participatory workshop involving an adult and a child working alongside each other, this session works particularly well and allows for skill sharing, interaction and creative engagement between family members.

3 Fairytale Forests (Half day workshop) This involves storytelling, basic line drawing and an introduction into mixed media ideas. Inspired by popular folk legends, Grimm fairy tales and stories of enchanted woods to create an imaginative little 3D forest learning to use wire manipulation, thread wrapping and basic stitch techniques to create individual visual stories. Each story will be mounted on a decorated wooden block for an authentic and impressive finishing touch. This workshop is perfect for exploring storybook narratives with children of primary school age and can be comfortably worked into any particular literacy project or topic. The opportunity to introduce more complicated stitch techniques, printing methods and colour palette ideas into this workshop ensures that the session can be easily adapted for a high school or adult audience. Printed Patterned Notebooks (Full day or Half day Workshop) Design and decorate your very own notebook. Inspired by simple patterns and shapes you will cut and make your own printing blocks and stencils - using these with basic relief printing methods, paper collage and pattern repeats to stylise your bespoke book cover and the pages within. We will attach ribbons, trims, buttons and sequins to decorate your book - making it the perfect personalised place for scribbling secrets and stories in. Time allows an introduction into additional printing methods on the full day session, offering a chance to explore relief prints, string prints and mono printing techniques as well as the printing blocks and stencils from the shorter workshop session.

4 Wire Garden Birds, Butterflies and Flowers (Drop in or half a day workshop) Working from pre-drawn templates and your own imaginative ideas you will learn the very basics of drawing with wire to make an adorable simple wire sculpture. Hunt for found forest or urban treasures and embellish your wire lines with your finds, yarns, buttons, feathers and fabric scraps. You will mount and fix your work into a real wooden little log to ensure your ornamental piece is beautifully presented. This is an ideal drop-in or make-and-take activity for either indoor or outdoor events that can be easily adapted to feed into particular projects or themes. This is a popular short session with families and children, with all family members often becoming involved in creating a stunning artwork together. Beautifully individual pieces can be created surprisingly quickly, gearing this session perfectly towards catering for larger numbers of workshop participants of all ages and artistic levels.

5 Extra Information I deliver workshops within schools, further education establishments, galleries, museums, libraries, studio and workspaces as well as at indoor and outdoor arts events, shows and festivals. I am able to devise and deliver bespoke workshop sessions using wire, print or stitch that are tailored to your school or group project needs. Please do contact me should there be a subject you would like me to develop or if you would like to adapt a workshop to suit a particular theme. I will supply all materials and equipment necessary for the workshop although participants may like to bring along their own haberdashery treasures and small items to personalise their makes during the day.
