2 Who We Are Community Law & Mediation is an independent, community-based organisation that works to empower individuals experiencing disadvantage by providing free legal, mediation and information services. At a national level, we seek to have a wider impact through our campaigns for law reform and by acting as a resource for other advocacy organisations. What We Offer The Mediation Service has over 150 volunteers, all trained in the Conflict Resolution and Basic Mediation Skills course. The Mediation Service aims to train sufficient numbers of mediators to a high standard and to ensure that all are accredited by the Mediation Institute of Ireland (MII). Types of Training Courses Mediation training courses include: Basic Conflict Resolution & Mediation Skills, Conflict Management Coaching, Community Mediation Model of Practice, Restorative Practice, Effective Communications Workshop, Team Conflict Courses and a number of short courses. The Mediation Service also runs a training module with NUI Maynooth Mediation Knowledge into Practice as part of their Masters Programme. Tutors and Teaching Methods All CLM tutors are fully qualified, MII accredited mediators. Courses are delivered in an accessible, interactive and practical way involving, as much as possible, class discussion and case studies.

3 BASIC CONFLICT RESOLUTION AND MEDIATION SKILLS This basic skills course is an intensive 60-hour training held over two evenings and six days. It is run as two separate modules over a period of one month. It is designed for volunteers and professionals who want to pick up basic conflict resolution and mediation skills for use in their own organization or work situation or to become a mediator in community, family and workplace disputes. A separate session for Project presentations will be organized about one month later on a date to be agreed with participants. Video Assessment and Qualification This is a further step for those who wish to go further and become a Certified Member of the Mediators Institute of Ireland (the professional association for mediators in Ireland The Mediation Service will support participants to join role-play groups to practice their mediation skills and to prepare for the video assessment of skills competence. This involves each trainee mediating a case through a one hour role play to demonstrate their skills as a mediator. A Certificate of Assessment is awarded upon successful completion of the video assessment. Trainees can then send both their Certificate of Completion and Certificate of Assessment to the MII to become a Certified Member of the MII. Dates and Times: Module 1: Thursday 2 nd October 2014 (4pm to 10pm) Friday 3 rd October 2014 (9:30am to 6pm) Saturday 4 th October (9:30am to 6pm) Module 2: Thursday 16 th October 2014 (4pm to 10pm) Friday 17 th October 2014 (9:30am to 6pm) Saturday 18 th October (9:30am to 6pm) A separate session for Project presentations will be organised about one month later on a date to be agreed with participants. Cost: 895 per person.

4 CONFLICT MANAGEMENT COACHING Conflict Management Coaching is a one to one technique, in which a trained coach assists a client to effectively prevent or manage disputes and to enhance their conflict management skills across a variety of settings. These include organisations, workplaces, families and communities. Conflict Management Coaching is being increasingly recognised and used by HR professionals, Managers, Coaches and Conflict Management Professionals and can be applied at any stage of a dispute resolution process. It can assist clients to better manage performance appraisal interviews, conduct difficult conversations, manage difficult people skilfully and de-escalate conflict situations. It can be used in the very beginning of a process, when conflict is new or can be used to assist people during or after the mediation process. Participants attending the workshop will learn how to coach their clients, using a structured process, to develop their conflict management skills in an environment designed to optimise learning. Methods used include self-reflection, skill-building exercises, discussion, simulations, demonstrations, and skills practices. Participants develop and practice conflict coaching techniques and skills under supervision of highly experienced trainers and mentors. During the four day workshop participants will: Understand the theory, principles and methods specific to the CINERGY model of conflict coaching Develop skills and competencies of the CINERGY model of conflict coaching and it s applications Experience the Conflict Management Coaching model as a coach, client and observer. Understand how the dynamics of conflict interface with coaching principles to provide a structure for clients to work through their conflicts and disputes. Receive high levels of mentoring and supervision during skills practices. Have access to one individual mentoring session (post training) Receive Certification of Course Completion having completed the four days training. Dates and Times: Cost: Thursday 6 th to Sunday 9 th November 2014 from 9.30a.m. to 5p.m. 1,295 per person

5 RESTORATIVE JUSTICE Restorative processes are an approach to justice that focuses on the needs of victims, offenders, as well as the involved community, instead of satisfying abstract legal principles or punishing the offender. Victims take an active role in the process, while offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, "to repair the harm they've done by apologizing, returning stolen money, or community service. Restorative justice involves both victim and offender and focuses on their personal needs. In addition, it provides help for the offender in order to avoid future offences. It is based on a theory of justice that considers crime and wrongdoing to be an offence against an individual or community, rather than the state. Restorative processes foster dialogue between victim and offender. Research shows that participants experience high rates of victim satisfaction and offender accountability. This programme centres on Victim-offender mediation and teaches participants valuable skills in repairing the harm. The programme includes: Basic principles of restorative justice and victim offender mediation The Victim Offender Mediation Process Pre-mediation phase: separate meetings with offender and victim Role play of pre-mediation interview and subsequent meeting(s) to prepare for the joint session Role play of the joint meeting and debriefing. Applicants must have the 60 hours Mediation Training already completed. Dates and Times: Wednesday evening 12 th November 2014 (7pm to 10pm) Wednesday evening 19 th November 2014 (7pm to 10pm) Friday evening 21 st November 2014 (7pm to 10pm) Saturday 22 nd November 2014 (10am to 5pm). 6 COMMUNITY MEDIATION MODEL OF PRACTICE This three day training programme is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to deliver the two-step community mediation model of practice in a co-working arrangement. The programme represents a practice based on historical interpretations of the application of the mediation method that include: a minimum of two mediators delivering the process private mediation meetings with individual disputants followed by a joint mediation meeting with all disputants a staged process that disputants engage in on a voluntary basis, that is also informal, confidential and future focused A maximum of eight candidates are accepted onto the programme. Candidates will have completed an initial generic training programme on mediation/conflict resolution skills. On completion of the programme, candidates will be awarded continuing professional points in accordance with the Mediators Institute of Ireland (MII) membership requirements. 7 TEAM CONFLICT COURSES 1. Effective Conflict Resolutions in Teams This two-day programme is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to function effectively as a team member and to competently manage conflict situations within teams. The programme incorporates the following: team dynamics from a theoretical and practical perspective communication patterns/styles key insights on concepts of conflict Conceptual frame-work that provides a process approach to the management of conflict situations. A maximum of twelve candidates are accepted onto the programme. Ideally, candidates will be active team members and able to provide actual scenarios for the purposes of evaluation and roleplay exercises. 2. Managing Conflict in Teams (Workplace) On completion of the one day training session, it is anticipated that the staff will be able to: Identify their personal reaction to conflict and crisis Useful to understand if it is a personal cultural reaction to another s cultural behaviour rather than a conflict/ crisis at all. Identify styles methods and strategies for managing conflict and crisis Critically assess the impact of their personal style of conflict and crisis management Facilitate dialogue to address issues of preventing unnecessary conflict. Topics covered: Conflict management styles Negotiating Skill Understanding the concept of conflict Approaches to conflict Resolution Positions and interests Skills and strategies for managing conflict Skills practice
