1 Statistics for manufacturing in New South Wales The statistics presented in this information sheet are only for manufacturing industries under MSA s coverage. The information sheet is presented in two parts: Part A provides an overview of the manufacturing in New South Wales. Data is provided about employment, number of businesses, skills and training and contribution to the economy (Page 2). Part B provides information relevant to regional areas of New South Wales. Data is provided on employment, number of business locations and skills and training (Page 14). The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts a census of the manufacturing industry every five years. The last ABS census on manufacturing in Australia was The next census will be in Information is gathered using the Australian New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) system which was updated in 26. Manufacturing is Division C and also includes Food Product Manufacturing, Beverage and Tobacco Product Manufacturing and Wood Product Manufacturing. Data relating to these latter sectors has been excluded where possible. Automotive Manufacturing has also been excluded. Note: Both the Laboratory Operations Training Package and the Competitive Manufacturing Training Package are used across all sectors under MSA s coverage. Note: MSA uses as its main data sources, the latest statistics available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER). This may result in variations between MSA s data and the data collected by other sources. 3 Employment in New South Wales Manufacturing industries Employment data is released by the ABS quarterly (February, May, August and November). Labour force data released for May 21 showed employment in manufacturing in New South Wales totalled 173, persons 1. This was approximately 7% of the working population of New South Wales and just over 3% of the Australian manufacturing employment in May 21. 5 The Manufacturing industry in New South Wales business numbers The ABS publishes Counts of Australian Businesses, including Entries and Exits annually. Data is sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Business Register (ABSBR).The most recent publication for the Financial Year 28 9 has been used for this information sheet. Businesses are classified by their number of employees. In 28 9 within MSA s coverage, there were 18,953 businesses operating in New South Wales within the Manufacturing industry 4. The majority of businesses were micro business employing less than 2 people 5. 6 Skills and training in New South Wales Manufacturing industries The Education and Work report is published by the ABS annually. The most recent edition of Education and Work May 21 was published in November 21. Data published in the Education and Work report is classified according to the Australian Standard Classification of Education 21 (ASCED). ASCED is structured into three different levels according to the field of education: Broad fields which are the broadest categories of the classification Narrow fields which are subdivisions of the broad fields, and Detailed fields which are subdivisions of the narrow fields The category within ASCED that is most relevant to Manufacturing is Broad Field 3 Engineering and Related Technologies. The National Apprentice and trainee collection includes data for all formally notified apprentices and trainees attending either publicly funded or private registered training organisations (RTOs). The National Students and courses collection only contains data from publicly funded institutions such as Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges. Data is collected for the Apprentice and trainee collection quarterly and for the Student and courses collection annually. This data is can also be accessed via NCVER s database VOCSTATS. 12 Contribution to the economy of New South Wales One measure of state domestic product (SDP) is Total Factor Income. As at June 21, manufacturing in New South Wales contributed $34,926 million (9.6%) in Total Factor Income to the state s economy, making it the second largest contributor 12. The subjects covered are: Employment and business locations Uptake of MSA Training Packages For the purpose of collecting data, the ABS divides each state into Statistical Subdivisions. The Statistical Subdivision (SSD) is an Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) defined area which represents an intermediate level, general purpose, regional type geographic unit. SSDs consist of one or more Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) and cover, in aggregate, the whole of Australia without gaps or overlaps 13. 15 Sydney In 26 7, Sydney had the most number of locations undertaking manufacturing (2,18) employing 172,469 people. Of the industry sectors covered by MSA, there were 2,96 locations undertaking fabricated metal product manufacturing which was the largest number of locations for any industry sector. This comprised around 15% of the manufacturing industry in Sydney. Textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing was the second largest sector by location, with 2,51 locations employing 9,543 people. Machinery and equipment manufacturing had the most employees (25,486) and accounted for 12% of all business locations 14. The majority of students (5,164) were undertaking qualifications from the Metal and Engineering Training Package 15. 17 Hunter region The Hunter region, north of Sydney, was the second largest manufacturing region in New South Wales in Manufacturing was carried out at 2,123 locations and employed 23,639 people. Historically the region is known for steel production which is reflected in the sectors with the highest employment and number of locations. The sector with the most number of locations was fabricated metal product manufacturing, which was carried out in 457 locations in the region and employed 4,81 people. However the largest employing sector was primary metal and metal product manufacturing (5,68) 16. 18 In 29 there were 3,565 students in the Hunter region undertaking training from an MSA Training Package. Uptake of MSA Training Packages mirrored the major manufacturing sectors. The Metal and Engineering Training Package had the most number of students (2,626) undertaking a qualification in 29. This Training Package accounted for over 7% of all students undertaking qualifications from MSA Training Packages in the Hunter region 17. 19 Illawarra region The Illawarra region, south of Sydney, is another major steel producing region in New South Wales. However the steel manufacturing sectors did not dominate the region as far as the number of locations manufacturing was carried out at. Fabricated metal product manufacturing had the most business locations (235). The next largest sector in terms of business locations was furniture and other manufacturing (146). In terms of employment, the major employing sector was the primary metal and metal product manufacturing sector (6,532), accounting for 53% of manufacturing employment in the region 18. Bluescope Steel is located at Port Kembla and is a major employer in the region. The Metal and Engineering Training Package had the most number of students (1,287) undertaking a qualification in 29. This Training Package accounted for nearly 78% of all students undertaking qualifications from MSA Training Packages in the Illawarra region 19. 21 Richmond Tweed region The Richmond Tweed region of New South Wales is located on the north-east coast of the state. Of the manufacturing sectors under MSA s coverage, furniture and other manufacturing had the most number of business locations (141) and employed 31 people in Note: In the graph below, data is not publicly available from the ABS for the Pulp, paper and converted paper product manufacturing and the Petroleum and coal product manufacturing sectors. 23 Mid-North Coast region The Mid-North Coast region of New South Wales lies between the Hunter and the Richmond Tweed regions. Within the sectors covered by MSA Training Packages, fabricated metal product manufacturing had businesses operating in 169 locations, employing 78 people in This was the second largest manufacturing sector in the Mid-North Coast region 22.
