2 failure free Oral Reading Green: Story 1: The Farm Visit I am going to visit my aunt and my uncle for a week. My aunt and uncle live and work on a farm that is far away in the country. I always wished I could stay on their farm for a week. My uncle said I may come over and help him as soon as I arrive. My uncle shall show me how to use his tractor to cut and carry crops. My aunt said I can go along with her when she goes to feed the animals. I never thought I would get to do those things so soon. I know I will have to listen because I don t want to get hurt on the farm. I know I will have fun on the farm with my aunt and uncle. I can see a cow and a horse and a goat in the yard. The cow is big and brown and white. The big brown and white cow is eating grass in the yard. The horse is tall and strong and fast. The tall strong horse is running in the yard next to the barn and the farmhouse. The goat is small and black and white. The small black and white goat is sleeping under a tree in the yard. The cow and horse and goat look happy in the yard. Name: Date: Pretest Score: / 116 Age: Date: Posttest Score: / 116 Green-Teacher Handbook Page 3

4 failure free Oral Reading Green: Story 3: In the Barn I am going into the barn which is next to the farmhouse. It is too dark to see if there are any animals in the barn. I must find the light switch and put it on at once. I have found the light switch on the wall right next to the door. I can see an old box on the ground in the barn. I can hear a noise coming from the old box on the ground. I can see a kitten sleeping in the old box on the ground. The kitten is using the old box on the ground to keep warm. I think the kitten would be better off if I took it out of the cold barn. I think I will clean and wash the kitten and keep it for a pet. The bees are very busy flying to every flower in the garden. There are eight apples growing on a tree in the garden. Two squirrels are running after each other on a branch. One squirrel jumped off the branch and ran to where I was standing. The jump did not hurt or stop the squirrel from running. A baby rabbit is sitting down under a tree in the garden. Seven blue and yellow flowers are next to the baby rabbit in the garden. The baby rabbit does not want to pull up these flowers. The baby rabbit only wants to look at these pretty flowers in the garden. Name: Date: Pretest Score: / 129 Age: Date: Posttest Score: / 129 Green-Teacher Handbook Page 5

My uncle is holding a bag in the air with both his hands. I ask my uncle to please tell me what is in the bag. My uncle wants me to make a guess before he tells me what is in the bag. I try my best but I cannot guess what is in the bag. My uncle says the bag is full of toys I can play with. I can see a toy airplane and a doll in a dress and a toy duck with big feet. I can see ten round balloons and a puzzle and a toy monkey in the bag. My uncle is happy to hear I like the toys in the bag. I asked my aunt to tell me who called me on the phone. My aunt said my mother and father called to wish me well on my birthday. My aunt said my mother and father would call again this evening. My uncle said something came in the mail for me. My uncle gave me an envelope to open and then read it. The envelope had a letter and money inside it. The envelope was from my mother and father for my birthday. The letter said we had to write to tell you we wish we were with you. The letter said to use the money to buy any kind of toy I would like.
