1 Verizon Mobile Data Access with Access Manager This document provides details on how to set-up your user s PC for accessing the Verizon Mobile Data Access using Access Manager. This will ensure that when your users connect to the Verizon Network, the correct security and functionality (VPN connection, firewall launch) settings are applied even on their mobile connection. System Requirements: Personal Computer (PC) with Windows Operating System (XP is used below) GPRS/UMTS Datacard with drivers already installed and inserted in the PC Verizon Mobile Data Access SIM Card, activated and inserted in the Datacard. Login and password for accessing Verizon s network Verizon Access Manager installed and updated 1

2 PART 1: Datacard Configuration When a Datacard is initiating a session, it is calling an APN (Access Point Name), this is the gateway on the mobile operator s network towards the relevant services. The steps below show you how to hard-code the Verizon APN into the 3G modem settings so that it is called whenever a connection is initiated. 1. Go to the Control Panel and select Phone and Modem Options 2. Select the Datacard which has been installed (a Novatel Wireless UMTS Modem in the case below) 2

Select Properties and then Advanced The Verizon APN is remotemobile.uk, enter the following string as an extra initialisation command: AT+CGDCONT=1, IP, remotemobile.uk,,0,0 4. Click OK to confirm new property settings 5. Click OK to close Phone and Modem Options 3

4 PART 2: Access Manager Configuration 1. Open Access Manager (version 5 is used below) and click on File > New > Connection > DialUp. Label the profile Mobile Data Access (or whatever other name you think is appropriate) 2. Under the Location Directory Search click the Enter Number Manually check box and enter the number *99#. As this applies to all countries from where Mobile Data Access is available this only needs to be done once and no specific country mentioned. 3. Security Settings are dictated by ESM policy and do not need to be modified. 4

5 PART 2: Access Manager Configuration 4. Under Settings, select the Datacard you have installed on the PC and wish to use for Mobile Data Access. Note Access Manager will only recognise the Datacard if it is inserted in the PC. If this is not the case, insert it and select Tools and Refresh Device List. If it still does not appear, it may not be correctly installed. 5. Click Save and Access Manager is ready for Mobile Data Access. 5

6 PART 3: Mobile Data Access Connection with Access Manager When the Datacard is inserted and powered up it will automatically connect to the mobile network signal it picks up, at this stage it is not connected to the Verizon Network as this required additional authentication. Some datacards have LED lights on them to show if the network is GPRS or UMTS, please refer to the instructions of the Datacard manufacturer for details. To make a connection, the user should select the Mobile Data Access connection profile and click Connect. Access Manager will prompt for login and password details which are the same as for a Dialup or WiFi connection. As soon as the user is authenticated on the network, Access Manager will look for policy and location directory updates and apply policy as defined for that particular user s group in ESM. If authentication fails, please check that Mobile Data Access is enabled in the roaming policy of the ESM Group of the user. 6

7 PART 4: Mobile Data Access with Datacard GUI The Graphical User Interface (GUI) provided by the datacard manufacturer is not needed as such; unless it is required to power up the Datacard itself (this varies from one manufacturer to the next please refer to the instructions of the Datacard manufacturer for details. It can be configured for making a Mobile Data Access connection, if you decide to use the software provided with the datacard, then you need not configure the modem setting with the Verizon Business APN as mentioned above. This, as well as the login and password, can be entered through the Datacard GUI. The connection in this case would be made outside of Access Manager, so no ESM policies (application awareness, VPN launch, etc.) would be automatically launched. Novatel Wireless Mobilink Client The Datacard GUI may be useful when the user is roaming as it will allow him to change from one network to the other or select which type of network he wants to connect to (GPRS or UMTS). This will be useful as on some roaming networks UMTS roaming is not yet enabled, so the user should use GPRS. Please refer to the instructions of the Datacard manufacturer for information on how to do this. Note: You can select your roaming network with the Datacard GUI, but still make the Mobile Data Access connection with the Verizon Business provided Connection Manager. Information on the roaming networks available to Verizon Business customers is available on our Web Pages (verizonbusiness.com/uk/customer). If when a user is roaming he is unable to connect to a roaming network, this may be due to roaming being barred for that particular SIM card. Please check that you have enabled roaming on that SIM card. 7
