The Promoting Life-skills in Aboriginal Youth (PLAY) program partners with First Nations communities and urban Aboriginal organizations across Ontario, British Columbia, Manitoba and Alberta to deliver community-driven, culturally-relevant play-based programming designed to enhance leadership, selfconfidence, and self-efficacy among children and youth. Guided by an Indigenous community development model, PLAY and its partners create safe and inclusive spaces where children and youth can share their ideas, their hopes and their fears, and learn the skills to become positive agents of change. Visit us at JOB SUMMARY: Right To Play has been implementing the PLAY program in Ontario since PLAY uses sport and play as a tool to build on the strengths of Aboriginal youth and their communities, while supporting the value of culture and identity. Right To Play is currently partnered with 89 First Nations communities and Aboriginal organizations throughout Canada. Reporting to the Sport For Development (S4D) Program Manager, the Sport For Development Program Officer will be responsible for planning and implementing outcome based sport programming in First Nation and urban Aboriginal communities across Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia (BC). As a Sport For Development Program Officer, the overall goal is to work with Community Mentors to determine which sport-based programming best suits the community needs, while working with consultants, Athlete Ambassadors and other skilled instructors to design and deliver community-wide sport programs. This position requires frequent travel to various First Nations across the country. The Sport For Development Program Officer works collaboratively with PLAY Program Managers and Program Officers to ensure that sport-based programs are aligned with the goals and vision of each community s PLAY program. The Sport For Development Program Officer is required to work within budget parameters and to report monthly on activities, accomplishments, risks and expenses.
2 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Job Responsibility #1: Sport-Based Program Design And Delivery (50% of Time): Creates application tools to ensure that communities apply for all sport for development programming Assists in conducting research and liaises with other sport for development agencies to design sport-based programs that integrate the best practices of sport for development in all PLAY sport programs. Assists in managing travel logisitics and administrative tasks associated with each sport-based program and training to ensure cost-effectiveness and reflect program schedules and facilitator availability. Integrates a variety of different events, activities and delivery approaches that ensure the appropriate integration of local culture, parent-to-child connections and inter-generational learning opportunities in all sport-based programs. Works with Community Mentors to ensure involvement in all sport-based programs from a widerange of community members and community leaders including, but not limited to: Community Supervisors, Youth Workers, Teachers, Recreation Workers, Health Workers, Parents and Guardians, Elders and Members of Chief and Council. Assists the S4D Program Manager in overseeing and acting as lead facilitator where applicable during all sport-based programs in communities. This involves working with the Community Mentor to manage a team of staff, volunteers, consultants and Athlete Ambassadors; hiring external consultants to fulfill required tasks; managing and adapting the schedule as needed; and troubleshooting and responding to emergencies effectively. Supports the integration and facilitation of sport-based programming into all necessary PLAY team events and special initiatives (ie. Youth Leadership Symposium) Job Responsibility #2: Training Of Team Of Program Implementers (15% of Time): Assists in the design of comprehensive and participatory trainings for Athlete Ambassadors, Community Mentors, community volunteers and Right To Play staff that will equip them to effectively plan, lead and assess sport-based programs. Assists in the design of tools and resources to help Community Mentors, community volunteers, Athlete Ambassadors and PLAY staff members in the implementation of a wide range of sportbased programs (i.e. Hockey For Development, Lacrosse For Development, Basketball For Development, Rookie League Baseball, and Soccer For Development). Ensures that cultural sensitivity is embedded in all trainings provided. Ensures that Community Mentors are involved in the design of each training and that all trainings reflect adaptations necessary to meet the needs of each specific community.
3 Job Responsibility #3: Stakeholder And Partnership Development (15% of Time): Assists in researching potential strategic implementing Aboriginal and non- Aboriginal partners (sport associations, sport leagues, professional athletes, Athlete Ambassadors, etc.) to collaborate on sport-based programs. Develops and nurtures relationships with existing athlete partners to ensure their long-term commitment to sport-based programs. Involves Athlete Ambassadors and athlete partners in the design and revisions of sport-based programs. Drafts partnership agreements and identifies strategies for establishing the most effective ways of collaborating with implementing partners. Assists in the research and investigation of funding opportunities to support sport-based programs (governmental, corporate and foundation). Assists in the development and submission of grants to fund on-going sport-based programs. Nurtures relationships with all funders who support sport-based programs through regular communication, progress reports, and opportunities to be involved in the programs. Job Responsibility #4: Monitoring And Evaluation (10% of Time): Works with the M&E Officer to adapt M&E tools to ensure they are suitable for sport-based programming. Works with the M&E Officer to ensure Indigenous methodologies are used to capture feedback on sport-based programs. Integrates a variety of opportunities to gather qualitative and quantitative feedback from all stakeholders during and after each sport-based program. Consolidates and analyzes all completed M&E tools to draft comprehensive reports on the successes and challenges of each sport-based program. Drafts synthesized reports for all funders and partners that reflect the highlights of each program. Reviews and finalizes all reports and ensures their timely distribution to all stakeholders. Job Responsibility #5: Maintain Project Budgets (10% of Time): Works with the S4D Program Manager and Finance and Admin Officer to monitor program expenditures against projected spending. Supports the management of each program s designated budget and consistently tracks all expenses related to each of the sport-based programming events to help in the cost projections of future events. Works to find partners who can offer in-kind contributions that will reduce the costs of all major training and youth gathering events
4 EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION: Required (must have): University Degree in any of the following areas: Political science, international development, indigenous learning, outdoor recreation, education, or social work. Desired (asset): Masters Degree in International Development, Community Development, Sport For Development, Kinesiology or another equivalent Membership or certification in sport management or coaching. EXPERIENCE: Required (must have): 4 or more years experience coaching and mentoring youth. Minimum 4 years experience as an elite-level athlete. Minimum 2 years experience working in a Sport For Development organization. Minimum 2 years practical experience working with and in First Nations communities Experience facilitating sport, recreation and/or development programming in remote First Nation communities. Minimum 2 years experience facilitating participatory workshops for adults and youth. Experience in facilitating events for groups of 100 or more. Experience working with a wide variety of funders Experience working with professional athletes Desired (asset): Experience in working with and in First Nations communities particular to community development and/or youth based programming Sound knowledge and respect for First Nations communities KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED: Budget management Personnel management must be confident in supervision of a large staff team Analytical and written skills including research and the writing of proposals and reports Knowledge of Microsoft programs Able to navigate and internet use Familiar with office equipment Attention to detail in planning large events Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation practices
