1 COLONIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT PLYMOUTH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Spring 2016 Rosemarie Gregitis, Principal This newsletter is online at Kindergarten Registration Ongoing Kindergarten Registration for the school year is now being held at the Colonial School District Central Registration Office, located within Colonial Elementary School, 230 Flourtown Road, Plymouth Meeting. For your convenience, new kindergarten students can be registered at Plymouth Elementary School during the week of April 11. Parents registering new students must call , ext to schedule an appointment. Colonial School District requires students entering kindergarten to be five years of age by September 15th. Visit colonialsd.org/administration/central-registration for more information or a registration packet. Please note that our Kindergarten Orientation Night will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:00 PM for parents of registered students coming to kindergarten in September. PSSA Testing for Third Grade Students Third grade students will be taking PSSA English Language Arts and Math tests during the weeks of April and April It is essential that all third grade students be in school during this testing period. Students in third grade should avoid any unnecessary absences or latenesses during this time. Thank you for planning educational trips accordingly! Attention: Field Trip Chaperones Due to recent state laws, all volunteers working with our students, including field trip chaperones, must be an approved Colonial School District volunteer. For information about becoming an approved volunteer, please visit our web site, colonialsd.org/support-colonial/be-a-volunteer. There you will find complete instructions and links to our volunteer application and the web sites you will need to visit in order to obtain a Child Abuse History Clearance, Criminal Background Check, and FBI Background Check (if necessary). 3 Walk Run With the arrival of spring weather, our before-school Walk/Run Program will be resuming on April 4 according to the below schedule: Kindergarten and First Grade - Mondays and Tuesdays Second and Third Grades - Wednesdays and Thursdays Library News We would like to thank our PTO for funding a visit from Author/Illustrator Meghan McCarthy on March 30th. If you would like to learn more about the author visiting our school on that date, please visit Our Library Donation Program is going strong and we are well on our way to meeting our goal! If you would like to make a donation to our school library, you can visit: From there you can choose a particular book to donate, or you can make a monetary donation to be used toward the purchase of library books! Pride Day This has been a very exciting and productive school year for our teachers and students! We are very proud of what we have accomplished and are excited to share our great achievements. We hope you will join us for PRIDE DAY, a special celebration to be held on Wednesday, May 11. Your children will be able to share their school work with you and celebrate their progress. There will be special visitation times for each grade level, and these will be announced soon. If you cannot attend the scheduled visitation for your child s grade level, please consider inviting a special relative or friend. Please avoid bringing younger children as this is a productive learning time for students. We look forward to seeing you! Page 3 Please know that Walk/Run is meant to be an enjoyable time for our students, but is not required! We realize that some buses arrive later than others. If able, parents are welcome (but not expected) to drive children to school on their Walk/Run days in order to allow them more time for this activity. We would like to reinforce that this is designed to be a fun activity and an opportunity to exercise and "wake up our brains" in the morning. Walk/Run will begin at 8:50 when the real feel temperature is above 40 degrees (including wind chill), and it is not raining. Please remember to check the weather if you re planning on joining in on the fun, and please remind your students to wear sneakers on their Walk/Run days!

4 Page 4 Metroplex May Day Spring Children s Collection Our third grade Spirit Team is hosting a spring children s drive to support Cradles to Crayons in Conshohocken. We will be competing with several area schools in the Metroplex May Day Spring Children s Collection in an effort to bring in as many donations as we can! This is an opportunity for us to win money for our school and at the same time help children in our community who need essential items! Donations can be dropped off at Plymouth Elementary School or the Plymouth Community Center between March 28th and May 20th. Donations can also be dropped off at the Metroplex Shopping Center on May 20th and 21st. Spirit Team Gives Back to the Community This spring the Spirit Team will be spreading kindness in many ways! They will be hosting two separate drives throughout the month of April. The first drive is called Dunk Your Kicks. For this drive we will be collecting used sneakers to support the Max Cure Foundation for Pediatric Cancer. The shoes you donate will help kids with cancer because $1 for every shoe donated will go toward cancer research. The second drive is The Great Stuffed Animal Drive. This drive is for the Rise and Shine Movement supporting child abuse awareness month. We will be donating NEW stuffed animals to comfort the children in need. Students may purchase their own stuffed animal and/or contribute their loose change to their classroom collection that will be used to purchase stuffed pets for the drive. The deadline for both of these drives is Friday, April 29 th. On April 26 th some members of the Spirit Team will be volunteering at Cradles to Crayons. Finally, the Spirit Team will host an Alex s Lemonade Stand to raise money for pediatric cancer research during school lunches in May. Stay tuned for more information about our lemonade day!

5 NURSE S NOTES Page 5 Reminder- School Physicals and Dentals are being scheduled. For those students who still require documentation of a physical or dental exam - you will be notified when the schedule is finalized as to the day and time of your child s physical or dental. Attention 2nd Grade Parents-The Pennsylvania School Health Code requires all 3rd Grade students to have a documented dental exam in their health record at school. This exam should be completed by your private dentist, one year prior to the start of 3rd grade. (Aug present) Dental forms have been sent home or can be obtained on the district web site. Medication-Children are not to carry any medication to or from school, this includes cough drops and any other form of medication (prescription or over the counter). PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL WITH ANY MEDICATION OF ANY KIND (NO PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION OR OVER THE COUNTER). It will not return home unless you choose to pick it up. If your child needs to take medication (either daily or as needed) at school next year, please have his/her doctor complete the medication dispensing form that is located on the district web site. An adult needs to bring the medication and the medication dispensing form that has been signed by the doctor along with your signature to the nurse s office at the start of school. ALL medications must have a doctor s order and parent signature. Please make sure that the doctor addresses daily medications for field trips. Also, please be sure that the expiration date on the medication is up to date. If your child has medication here at school, you will be receiving a letter for the intended date that you will be picking up the medication. Any medication left at school over the summer will be discarded. Sunscreen must be applied prior to your child coming to school. Send in a hat for the outdoors and wear a shirt that has short sleeves to protect your child from the sun. Please do not send sunscreen into school with your child. Please have your child refrain from wearing flip flops, opened toed shoes or elevated sneakers while at school. The warmer weather is approaching and the children will be playing outside and inappropriate foot wear is not acceptable.
