2 Pope John Paul II announced the institution of World Youth Day in December, 1985, as an annual gathering of youth and young adults for prayer, worship and celebration of the Catholic faith. The event is observed annually in dioceses and every two to three years at an international gathering.

3 Putting Trust in the Young World Youth Day is a coming together of young adults from the four corners of the world and a strong reminder of the strength and confidence the young bring to the Church today. Gathering Together World Youth Day is not simply a gathering for the young people of the world. It is also a time for the world to put their trust in the world's youth. It s a calling for the world's youth to come together as one people. Meeting the International World on a Human Level It is still a marvel in this the 21st Century to exchange with others and to be a part of an international experience. International events are able to stir much hope but also many fears (increase in fundamentalism, nationalism and other new conflicts...) The Church and Christians themselves have a role to play in preventing the development of these fears, and in aiding each person in finding their way and discovering hope. Adapted from

4 A pilgrimage is a journey a pilgrim makes to a sacred place for the purpose of venerating it or to ask for heavenly aid, and ultimately to come to know God better We modern pilgrims also leave our homes, families and comforts in order to journey to sacred places to encounter God. What does this mean?

5 Youth who participate in this pilgrimage will also: live a rich moment in various teachings strong moments of contemplation and meditation share their daily lives with other youth who do not have the same culture as they do Everything will therefore be lived in the simple way, in many aspects: lodging and meals will be very simple, thus in many occasions young people will need to show patience and solidarity.

6 History of World Youth Days On Palm Sunday, 1985, Pope John Paul II announced to the youth in Rome that World Youth Day would be created. In addition to the Diocesan World Youth Day that occurs every year in all dioceses across the world, the pope calls youth from around the world to gather for International World Youth Day every two to three years. These international gatherings have taken place all over the world.

11 KRAKOW - City of Saint John Paul II friend of the youth Karol Wojtyła (JPII) was born in Wadowice, on May 18, 1920 in Krakow He joined the underground seminary in Krakow in 1942 He was ordained a priest on November 1, 1946 He was nominated Bishop in 1958, and actively participated in the Second Vatican Council in 1963, he became the Metropolitan Bishop of Krakow and, four years later, Pope Paul VI appointed him Cardinal. 12 KRAKOW - City of Saint John Paul II friend of the youth After the death of John Paul I in September 1978, for the first time in 456 years it was not an Italian but a Pole who was elected Pope on October 16, John Paul II s pontificate was definitely exceptional. Meetings with young people were immensely important for the Pope. He was also the initiator and originator of the World Youth Day. John Paul II visited his Homeland nine times. His last visit to Poland took place in August Each time, he met with the Polish youth in front of the famous papal window in Krakow, at 3 Franciszkańska Street. The colours used in the logo blue, red and yellow are the official colours of Krakow and its coat of arms.

15 World Youth Day Symbols The Cross "My dear young people, at the conclusion of the Holy Year, I entrust to you the sign of this Jubilee Year: the Cross of Christ! Carry it throughout the world as a symbol of Christ's love for humanity, and announce to everyone that only in the death and resurrection of Christ can we find salvation and redemption"(rome, on April 22, 1984). Saint John Paul II Holy Year Cross, the Jubilee Cross, the WYD Cross, and the Pilgrim Cross or Youth Cross. Since 1984, the WYD Cross set out on its journey around the world and is always present in the international celebration of WYD. Since 1994, WYD Cross travels across the dioceses of the host-country of WYD.

16 World Youth Day Symbols In 2003, Pope John Paul II entrusted to the youth another symbol of faith to be taken all over the world with the Cross: the Icon of Our Lady, Salus Populi Romanix. 17 The official prayer of World Youth Day 2016 entrusts humanity and the young to divine mercy, asks the Lord for the grace of a merciful heart and asks the intercession of the Virgin Mary and St. John Paul II, patron saint of WYD.
