2 Studio Box By Jane LaFazio JaneLaFazio.com Left over blue jeans and some fabric? Create a cool and useful Studio Box measuring 6 x 6 x 6 inches. You ll need: Fusible craft interfacing (Peltex or Timtex brand) measuring at least 18x18 inches Denim jeans or something similar Denim jean pocket Sewing machine (with a denim or heavy duty needle) Additional fabrics (I used hand-painted scrap fabric) Glue stick (optional) Embroidery thread and needle (optional) Acrylic paint (optional) Please read the directions before your begin. 2 P a g e S t u d i o B o x J a n e L a F a z i o. c o m

3 1. On fusible craft interfacing measure out a grid of 6 inch squares. 2. Cut away the four outside corner pieces, leaving 4 sides and the bottom in one piece. Set the interfacing aside. 3. Gather some hand painted fabric scraps (or whatever you ve got) and denim jean scraps. Cut the denim in 5 squares, slightly larger 6x6 inches. (You will trim off the excess later.) Cut the colorful fabric scraps into shapes, like circles and squares. Create 3 small collages on 3 of the 6x6 inch denim squares. One side and the bottom will remain plain denim. The side will be used for the pocket in step Use a touch of glue stick to hold the smaller pieces in place before sewing Place the layers of denim and fabric collage under your sewing machine needle. 3 P a g e S t u d i o B o x J a n e L a F a z i o. c o m

4 5. Using a contrasting thread, free-motion machine stitch the pieces down. Don t worry about making perfect stitches! 6. Add some hand stitching too. Or some embellishments, like buttons or beads. The more embellishments the better. 4 P a g e S t u d i o B o x J a n e L a F a z i o. c o m

5 Get wild with your stitching! Mixing black and white prints with bright color always works. 7. When you have the 5 exterior sides complete, iron the pieces to the fusible craft interfacing. Remember to cover the bottom of the box and one side in plain denim. The side of the box will be for the pocket in step 8. 5 P a g e S t u d i o B o x J a n e L a F a z i o. c o m

6 8. Cut out a jean pocket top and trim close along the sides. Add collage fabric to the denim pocket. Machine stitch the pocket to the plain denim side. Make sure the pocket opens towards the top opening of the box. (Machine stitch just inside the French seams of the pockets, since the seams are so thick.) 9. Add additional free motion machine stitching after the exterior sides are fused in place. (Except the pocket!) 10. 7 11. For the lining of the box, turn over the collaged side, and fuse denim to cover all the stitching in what will be the interior of the box. 12. Once the lining is in place, cut away the excess around the edges. Machine stitch a wide zigzag stitch on all the edges of the box catching the top collaged layer, the interfacing and the denim lining. 13. To help with the creasing and assembling of the box, machine straight stitch bottom of each side panel. 7 P a g e S t u d i o B o x J a n e L a F a z i o. c o m

8 14. Assemble by hand-stitching the sides of the box together. 15. Pin the sides together and hand-stitch one side at a time. Be sure to make a knot every once in a while to secure the stitching.
