3 COURSE DESCRIPTION The public speaking course explores the process of generating, transmitting, receiving, and evaluating ideas and feelings through intrapersonal communication, interpersonal communication, oral interpretation, group discussion, and public speaking. This course cultivates personal growth and development, develops oral communication skills, promotes the application of oral communication skills to other academic disciplines and to life experiences. 4 LCPS STANDARDS OF LEARNING FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING The LCPS standards of learning for public speaking were synthesized and adapted from oral language standards published by the College Board (CB), the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association (NCTE/IRA), and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) for oral language in high school. LCPS 1 The student make planned oral presentations (SOL 9.2a, 11.1). LCPS 2 LCPS 3 LCPS 4 LCPS 5 LCPS 6 LCPS 7 The student supports and defends ideas in a public forum (SOL 11.1c). The students gathers, evaluates, and synthesizes data from a variety of sources (NCTE/IRA 7), uses relevant details to support main ideas (SOL 9.2b, 11.1a, 12.1c), and illustrates main ideas through anecdotes and examples (SOL 9.2c). The student rehearses and revises (CB S3.3). The student uses a well structured narrative or logical argument (SOL 12.1b). The student uses grammatically correct language, including vocabulary appropriate to the topic, audiences, and purpose (SOL 9.2f, 11.1d, 12.1e) The student monitors audience engagement and adjusts her use of spoken language to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes (CB S3.1, S3.4; NCTE/IRA 4, 12) 2
