Leibel, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics & Medicine; Head, Division of Molecular Genetics; Co-Director, Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center PROGRAM DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES This one day program is designed for investigators, students and clinicians with an interest in diabetes, and is intended to provide an overview of the recent developments in diabetes-related research with emphasis on molecular genetics and molecular physiology. This year's meeting focuses on recent developments in stem cell biology as they relate to the pathogenesis and treatment of diabetes. At the conclusion of the program, participants can expect to have heard current thinking regarding the utility of rodent and human embryonal and adult stem cells in understanding the development of islets and beta cells, and their natural and therapeutic replacement. THE NAOMI BERRIE DIABETES CENTER The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center, combining premier family-centered patient care and education for children and adults with world-class research programs, opened in the Russ Berrie Medical Science Building in October The Center offers coordinated, multidisciplinary clinical care for the diabetic patient. Educational, nutritional and psychosocial counseling help the patient and family to cope effectively with diabetes. Basic and clinical research programs at the Center focus on the biologic basis of diabetes, the prevention of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, as well as diabetic complications.
