MODULE 01 Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Fundamentals Introduction Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire enables you to create design models within an intuitive, model-centric interface. You create and modify in the graphics window using Toolbars, Icons and the Dashboard. Equally important, the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire interface includes the Navigator and Browser, which enable you to quickly locate, preview, and open design models. You also have the ability to manipulate and orient design models, which is an important and basic skill that you will use whenever you re working in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. Objectives After completing this module you will be able to: Understand CAD terminology and Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire concepts and conventions. Navigate the main Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire features and tools Preview, open and orient design models Manage Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire memory and directories Terminology, Concepts and Conventions CAD Computer Aided Design is a term used to cover the use of computer-based applications/programs that aid Designers and Engineers in the design and development of products, everything from aircraft to vacuum cleaners and ballpoint pens to prosthetic limbs. CAD typically refers to the geometry creation/authoring tool within the Product Development Process. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire is a powerful, solid modelling system used to create models of parts and assemblies during the engineering process of product development. Once part and assembly models are created, several other Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire applications can be used to create a variety of deliverables, such as production drawings and photo-realistic rendered images. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire can create a variety of model and geometry types, from simple block like models to very advanced surface models, and from single piece parts to complex assemblies with thousands of components. There are several core concepts that are fundamental to modelling with Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire: Solid Modelling Feature-Based Parametric Parent / Child relationships Associative Model Centric Dimensioning Scheme Design Intent
Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Fundamentals Solid Modelling Solid Modelling is the unambiguous representation of a component. Solid Models are virtual 3D representations of part that contain properties such as mass, volume, centre-of-gravity and surface area, and allow Engineers and Designers to accurately define every aspect of the component down to the smallest detail. Solid modelling also allows the Engineer to dynamically visualise the component from any angle and produce high quality outputs such as photo-realistic rendered images, animations (movies) and engineering production drawings. Feature Based This term refers to how the Solid Model is constructed. Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire models are constructed using a series features applied in a specific order. Typically a Solid Model contains one or more features, each feature builds upon the previous feature and can reference any of the preceding features thus enabling design intent to be captured. The order in which these features are built is referred to as the feature history. In this example the part shown has been built using seven features: 1. First is the solid extrusion which forms the basic overall shape. 2. An additional extrusion is created at the top of the model. 3. Another extrusion is created at the bottom of the model 4. A hole is inserted at the top of the model 5. Another hole inserted at the bottom 6. Rounds are applied along four edges 7. A small radial hole is inserted at the top of the model. Module 01-2
Parametric Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire models are value driven using dimensions and parameters. If you change a dimension of a feature, then that solid feature updates. This change then automatically propagates through the rest of the features in the model, updating the entire part. Dimensioning Scheme This term refers to how geometry is dimensioned / constrained and has significant effect on how a part updates when dimensions are changed. Design Intent When creating a part and/or assembly it is important to understand and capture the design intent, i.e. capturing the specific design objectives of the part and/or assembly. A model that effectively captures design intent is also termed flexible in that, should dimensions be changed, the updated model still meets its design objectives. Parent / Child Relationships Parent / Child relationships provide a powerful way to capture design intent. These relationships are constantly created between features and components during the modelling process. To take full advantage of parent / child relationships it is important to manage the relationship. When creating a new feature, features that are referenced become parents to the new feature. If the parent features are updated, the child features are also updated. In this example a flat bar has been modelled with a hole at one end and a chamfer added to the top edge of the hole. The dimensioning scheme shown in the first case has the holes position referenced from left-hand end of the bar. When the bar length is changed the hole doesn t move. Changing the dimensioning scheme and hence the parent of the holes position produces the required result and captures design intent. Module 01-3
Associative & Model Centric In Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire, all downstream models and deliverables are based upon the part model. If the part is changed, any assemblies or drawings that reference that model are automatically updated. This associativity is bi-directional, meaning that changes can also be initiated from other modes, such as the assembly or drawing, and reflected in all other models. Once part models are created, 2D views can be quickly placed on a drawing. Dimensions can also be automatically created based on features in the model. Models can be combined to form assemblies. Depending on how the components are assembled, the components may either be static or allowed to move as a mechanism. Module 01-4
Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire User Interface Navigator The navigator is a pane with several tabs located on the left-hand side of the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire interface. Folder Navigator: enables you to navigate the folders on your computer and network Favourites: enables you to bookmark Web pages and Folder locations (not shown in above image). Connections: provides links to common areas of interest for Pro/ENGINEER Users (not shown in above image). Model Tree: shown on the next slide. Web Browser The Browser is an integrated content viewer within Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. It works in conjunction with the Folder Navigator to help you find files on your computer as well as browse Web pages. In the above image the Web browser is divided into two sections; the File List and Preview Window. File List: When using the Folder Navigator, the browser displays files and models within the selected Folder. By using the File Type filter you can view specific Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire file types. Preview Window: when a Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire model is selected, a dynamic preview of the model appears in the browser. You can spin, Zoom and Pan the Preview to observe the model geometry. The Web Browser can also be used to browse the Internet on a computer with Internet access. Main Menu Located at the top of the interface, the main menu contains standard commands and options such as File, Edit, and View. Toolbars Toolbars contain icons for commonly used tools and functions: Main Toolbar located along the top of the interface, contains common tools and view controls. Feature toolbar located down the right if the interface, contains feature tools for creating models. Module 01-5
Message Window The message window provides you with prompts, feedback, and messages from Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. Navigator Model Tree The Navigator is a pane containing several tabs located on the left side of the interface. The Model Tree lists the features in the model, in the order in which they were created. The Model Tree also displays the order of the parts and sub-assemblies in an assembly. Graphics Window The Graphics Window is the working area in Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire in which you create and modify Pro/ENGINEER models such as parts, assemblies, drawings and rendered images. The graphics window can be maximised by minimising the Browser and the Navigator. This is achieved by clicking the right edge of the Web browser and/or navigator pane. This edge is referred to as the sash control. Dashboard The Dashboard is a dialog bar located along the bottom of the interface that appears when you create or edit the definition of a feature. It provides you with controls, inputs, status and guidance for carrying out a task, such as creating or editing a feature. Tabs: Various dashboard tabs are available with additional feature options Icons: Dashboard icons include feature controls on the left and Preview, Create Feature and Cancel Feature options on the right. Menu Manager The Menu Manager is a cascading menu that appears on the far right-hand side of the screen during the use of certain functions and modes within Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. Module 01-6
Dialog Box Some modelling functions display a dialog box to allow entry / modification of values and/or properties. Selection Filter The Selection Filter is in the lower-right corner and enables you to narrow the types of entities that you can select in the graphics window. Orienting Design Models Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire allows you to view the model from any orientation. You can spin and pan the model around the screen, zoom in and out using a combination of keyboard and mouse functions. SPIN Middle Mouse Button (MMB): Hold down and drag to rotate the model PAN SHIFT + MMB: Hold down and drag to move the model across the screen ZOOM CTRL + MMB: hold down and drag vertically to zoom in and out. If your mouse has a wheel rotating the wheel can be used to ZOOM in and out TURN CTRL + MMB: hold down and drag horizontally to turn the model normal to the screen. Orient Mode Orient Mode enables you to spin, pan and/or zoom without pre-highlighting or selection. Orient mode has options including Dynamic, Anchored, Delayed and Velocity. Dynamic: Orientation is updated as the pointer moves. The model spins freely about the centre of the model. Anchored: Alternate spin algorithm utilising the on-screen spin axis. This mode is useful as it enables you to return to your original position. Delayed: there is a time delay between the spin, pan or zoom and the screen update. This delay is useful when working with large assemblies. Velocity: You can change the orientation of the model by spinning, panning or zooming at a controlled speed on the screen. This mode is useful when making presentations from Pro/ENGINEER. Module 01-7
You can also orient the model with respect to geometry such as an edge or surface with Orient mode. To use Orient mode: Right-click Orient Mode the menu such as Delayed. from the main toolbar then right-click and select one of the four modes from Managing Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Directories and Memory Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire is a memory-based system in that files you create and edit are stored within system memory (RAM) while you re working on them. This is important because until you save your files you risk losing them if there is a power failure or system crash. Opening and Saving Working Directory You can select a folder or network location to be the Working Directory. The system then defaults to opening and saving Pro/ENGINEER files to this location. When designing a component it is often the case for one dimension to depend on another, this relationship can be captured within Pro/ENGINEER for use with a single part or between components within an assembly. In Session memory Models that may be in memory (but not displayed) are opened before the system opens another copy from the folder structure. My Documents this is the default location for opening new models when using File>Open, or when saving models. It becomes an optional location once the Working Directory is set. Erasing Memory (RAM) Models are stored in system memory (RAM) until you either erase them or exit Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire. This is especially important it you re working on files that have the same name but are in various stages of completion. Erasing models from memory does NOT delete them from the hard drive or network storage area; it only removes them from system memory (RAM). Module 01-8
Deleting Models Deleting files permanently removes them from the working directory on your hard drive or network storage area. Be careful when deleting files as you cannot undo deleted files. File Extensions Part, Assembly and Drawing files use *.PRT, *.ASM and *.DRW extensions respectively. Each time a model is saved Pro/ENGINEER creates a new, iterated version (dot number) of that model; for example WHEEL.PRT.1, WHEEL.PRT.2, WHEEL.PRT.3 and so on. Module 01-9
Exercise M01-1: Previewing and Opening Design Models Objectives After successfully completing this exercise, you will know how to: Locate Design data using the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Navigator Add a Favourite within Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire Browse the Folder Navigator Preview and Open Design models Resource centre The default Web page displayed is the Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 3.0 Resource Centre.
