ANNE S C of E PRIMARY SCHOOL POLICY FOR PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION (PSHE) AND CITIZENSHIP MISSION STATEMENT AND AIMS OF THE SCHOOL A family where God guides our footsteps 1. To be a compassionate and secure family community, where we live out the values at the heart of the Christian faith. 2. To provide a safe, stimulating and vibrant learning environment that enables each child to achieve his/her potential, and a broad and balanced curriculum that inspires a love of learning. 3. To foster in children the skills and qualities that will enable them to be confident, independent and self-motivated individuals, preparing them for their future at home, work and leisure. 4. To be a community that includes, respects and cares for everyone; where diversity is celebrated and all members are valued. 5. To be a community that celebrates the contributions and achievements of all. 6. To develop effective relationships between staff, pupils, the church and the wider community to promote the development of all our pupils. Aims Pupils will be given opportunities to: Develop independence, confidence and self-worth. As a school we aim for every child to appreciate their uniqueness and value as an individual and the important role they each play within the life of the school and the wider world. Every child will be treated as a special and exceptional person. Feel supported through difficult situations both in school and in their personal lives. All members of staff will try to equip children with the skills needed to deal with life s challenges seeking outside support where necessary. Enjoy positive relationships with peers, having respect for children who may be different to themselves but showing willingness to work and collaborate with all children regardless of race, ability, gender or social background. Develop their understanding of a healthy, safer lifestyle and use this knowledge to make informed decisions and choices in the present and in the future. Become a responsible citizen who knows they can make a difference to others around them and further afield through fund raising and work within the local community. These aims are consistent with the school aims. For the pupils in the Foundation Stage the school will implement the guidelines for Personal Social and Emotional Development as set out in the Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance. At key stages 1 and 2, the school will use the guidelines for Personal, Social and Health Education and 2

3 Citizenship set out in the National Curriculum as a framework for pupils personal and social development. Learning activities Provision for PSHE and Citizenship is made by: The school is committed to using the Government s SEAL scheme of work for developing children both socially and emotionally which is then supported in class with the Lancashire PSHE scheme of work for small schools. Whilst the SEAL scheme is used within whole class assemblies and individual class circle times for developing individual and whole school values, the PSHE scheme delivers further education on healthy lifestyles including drugs, alcohol and safeguarding. Thus children will receive input from a combination of the two. Within class, activities and opportunities include: Undertaking individual, paired and group work. Circle time discussions. Group drama/role play. Art and design work including making posters and drawings to communicate beliefs and understanding. A range of activities outside the classroom include: Assemblies Introducing and following up the SEAL topic half termly. Visit from the Life Caravan Visits to places of interest Extra curricular activities Outdoor pursuits and team building School Council Fund raising and charity work Interaction with members of the local community, visiting speakers and professionals. Class teachers and other members of staff have the responsibility of teaching children positive social, emotional and spiritual skills through: Implementing the school s procedures for pastoral care, guidance and support. Responding to class/individual needs and issues, providing discrete sessions to promote pupils personal and social development. Handling issues outside the classroom in a calm manner which encourages the children to reflect on their own behaviour. This will involve providing support and ideas in relation to solving problems independently. Modelling good practice in attitude, commitment and work ethic. 3

4 Planning The provision for Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship is planned at class, key stage and whole school level. Teachers plan activities on a weekly and termly basis. Long Term planning is kept by the class teachers and subject coordinator which maps out how SEAL and PSHE units run alongside each other. Planning is used to ensure progression and continuity in pupils learning experiences. Within the Foundation Stage: At Key Stage 1: PSHE and SEAL activities run... Class 3/4: 2 x ½ hour sessions weekly for the delivery of SEAL and PSHE. Class 5/6: 2 x ½ hour sessions weekly for the delivery of SEAL and PSHE. Developing responsible citizens should also be interwoven within other curriculum areas. For example, when children are taken on a trip, they are to be encouraged to show respect for members of the public and visit leaders listening and showing appreciation for their time. As a church school, there is also a large overlap between the programme of study for religious education and the aims of PSHE and citizenship. We aim for our children to become upright members of the community who feel loved and cared for by our school family and most importantly, God. We therefore deliver a considerable amount of the PSHE and citizenship curriculum through our religious education lessons. Using the Bible and teachings of Jesus, as a basis from which our values and attitudes grow and flourish. Organisation Within classes pupils are taught individually, in groups and as a whole class as appropriate to the learning objectives. Children are grouped in friendship groups, ability groups and mixed ability groups from time to time. Assessment Assessment of pupils personal and social development and guidance is generally the responsibility of the class teacher and is used to: Provide diagnostic information about individuals/groups against PSHE learning outcomes. Plan future teaching and learning. Provide summative information for parents and carers. Contribute to each child s record of achievement. 4

5 Pupils also have PSHE books which are solely used as a diary/log of work to record reflections, discussions and pictures. A range of assessment techniques are used including: Teacher observation. Teacher-pupil discussion. Individual pupil reflection. Parent-pupil discussion in preparation for move into new class/year group. Recording and Reporting (See Policy) Parental Involvement The school aims to involve parents closely in promoting Personal, Social and Health Education by: Providing information about Sex and Relationship Education. Providing information about Drugs Education. Holding regular meetings with parents to discuss pupils personal and social development. Offering opportunities to attend sessions on the Life Caravan. Providing written reports on pupils personal and social development. Yearly reflections with their child on their thoughts for their next year in school. Community Involvement There are strong links with the local church and this provides opportunities for pupils spiritual development. Links with local voluntary groups enable pupils to develop their understanding of citizenship. Effective links with the Fire service, Police service Health service and Preston North End Football Club also provide valuable support in promoting personal and social development. Staff Development The co-ordinator provides training for staff and offers advice on further inset needs. 5

6 Equal Opportunities It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure that all pupils, irrespective of gender, ability, race and social circumstance are supported in their personal and social development. Inclusion The school will work to ensure that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and able, gifted and talented, are provided with appropriate support in their personal and social development. In order to achieve this, teachers will work to: Set suitable learning challenges Respond to pupils diverse learning needs Overcome potential barriers to learning and assessment for individuals and groups of pupils Additional opportunities to take responsibility, develop leadership skills, think creatively and use their talents for the good of the class or the wider community. Evaluation The co-ordinator provides support for teachers and will lead the evaluation of Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship by: Discussion with teachers and pupils. Giving the head teacher an annual summary report in which the strengths and weaknesses in the subject are evaluated, and areas for further improvement are indicated. END OF DOCUMENT 6
