2 Topical Outline: Introduction to Media Production 2 The course MCOM 2300 Introduction to Media Production includes the "fundamentals of audio control- room procedures, audio recording and editing, single camera field production, and video editing" (UALR, 2011, p. 146). The topical outline for Introduction to Media Production will take students through a video production from start to finish; this includes preproduction, production, and postproduction using video study, theories, and practices. The three main topical headings for this course are preproduction, production, and postproduction. Subheadings under preproduction are scriptwriting, cast & crew, and audio production. Subheadings under production are basic field production, lighting, and camera operation. Subheadings under postproduction are nonlinear video editing, digital graphics, and video compression. In the course students will be required to research, write, shoot, record audio, and edit short video productions in small groups and as an individual. The topical outline for Introduction to Media Production will assist students in the video production process. By following the three main headings and subheadings, each student can use preproduction, production, and post production to produce his or her own video production.

3 Topical Outline: Introduction to Media Production 3 Introduction to Media Production I. THE PREPRODUCTION STAGE- Planning the Production A. Scriptwriting & a Script Outline 1. Know the audience or content: News, Commercial, Educational & research the topic 2. Develop script, identifying: what'll be seen & what'll be heard & in a sequenced order 3. The Preproduction Stage Link, pay attention to script outline B. Talent & Crew 1. Know who'll be acting & performing 2. Schedule crew: who'll be audio production, video production, lighting, & grip 3. Find talent to track & record a "voice over" for script C. Audio Production 1. Write a text form from the script outline for talent to record as a "voice over" 2. Record "voice over" matching video shots described in script outline 3. Use Adobe Audition to record "voice over" with Adobe Audition Tutorials II. THE PRODUCTION STAGE A. Basic Field Production & Operation Techniques 1. Record broll video or alternate video footage used to cover- up audio or "voice over" 2. Record interviews using correct Interview Shot composition 3. Use various shot types & framing: (EWS, WS, MS, CU, CA & others) Shot Examples B. Lighting 1. Use appropriate Lighting for Video and Television 2. Use correct Color Temperature on the Kelvin Scale, for daylight or inside lighting 3. Use Three Point Lighting: (1.) Key Light (2.) Fill Light (3.) Back Light C. Camera Operation 2. Use a Canon XL2 Camera to record video Camera Operation Demo

Use correct video Filters for location (inside or outside) III. POSTPRODUCTION- The Final Product A. Nonlinear Video Editing 1. Follow script: insert interviews, "voice over" audio, & cover with matching broll 2. Video Editing Rules- No jump cuts, use & match broll to sound, & cut on motion 3. Use Final Cut Pro Tutorials to assist with using Final Cut to edit the video B. Digital Graphics 1. Use graphics to deliver information: Names & title, Contact info, or address 2. Use Photoshop to make images, graphics, or logos transparent: Photoshop Tutorials 3. Use FCP's Motion software to create animations or moving graphics: Motion Tutorials C. Video Compression 1. After the video project is scripted, shot, tracked, edited, & graphics are added, the last step is to create a final video file using FCP's Compressor application 2. Video for the Internet 3.
