25 COMPUTING FOR EDUCATORS course title HIGHER DIPLOMA IN COMPUTING FOR EDUCATORS national framework level 8 lyit internal code ly_kcped_g duration 21 months, part-time number of places 20 awarding body lyit Is this the course for you? With the increase in the use of ICT in schools and the expansion of initiatives such as the CoderDojo there is a growing need for more educators who have the capacity to understand the technology marketplace with particular regard to the ICT industry, teach ICT in an interesting and motivational manner and to engage with their students and to communicate enthusiasm about ICT to their students. Such knowledge is essential for students regardless of the career they intend to pursue. The Higher Diploma will consist of a series of part-time modules in ICT. These modules individually and collectively are designed to gradually build the capability of the educator to work with their students in a wide range of ICT activities and to allow the educator to take on the role of a champion for ICT development within their schools. The course will be delivered by blended learning with short intensive sessions at the start of each semester in the college with the balance of the course being delivered by distance learning. Minimum entry requirements The course will be available to applicants who meet the following criteria: 1 A level 8 honors degree or equivalent in a non-computing discipline or 1 A level 7 ordinary degree with at least 3 years post-graduate experience which is relevant to their degree and is in a non-computing discipline. 1 Graduates working in an educational environment. Admission to this course will be by standard LYIT application procedure for an add-on level-8 program ( lycehd/). Application forms are available on the Letterkenny IT web site or from the Admissions Office Career opportunities This course is designed for educators working within the broad education system. For educators with secure employment this course offers the opportunity to diversify professionally and to educate a body of students who will be much better equipped to deal with modern technology whether or not those students go directly into ICT related study or careers. For educators who are seeking to secure employment, given the shortage of teachers/ educationalists with an ICT background, those who undertake a significant and targeted ICT course such as this are likely to be more flexible and thus more employable. 158

The postgraduate diploma is a two semester taught course in computing which focuses on topics applicable to Enterprise Applications Development. These are followed by a placement module in which students will gain practical experience working in a company engaged in enterprise applications development. Its aim is to take a graduate in a computing or computing related field and augment his/her skills and knowledge in readiness to begin a career in enterprise or cloud applications development. It is designed to ensure that graduates are given both a base for beginning to work immediately in the industry/field and also for continuing self-development. These skill sets are reinforced with a strong emphasis on teamwork and project work. The additional dissertation component for the Masters will offer the student the opportunity to apply a range of topics covered in the postgraduate diploma to demonstrate an extended knowledge and ability in that area. The dissertation will normally be completed over one to two additional semester s depending on whether its done on a part-time or full-time basis. Note: On completion of the postgraduate diploma students normally obtain employment so the dissertation is typically done part-time. Minimum entry requirements The course will be available to applicants who hold an Honours Degree in Computing with first or second-class honours or an equivalent qualification. For suitably qualified applicants who are currently in employment in the field of Enterprise Application Development there will also be a limited number of places available for part-time study with an option to seek an exemption on the placement requirement dependent on the suitability of the applicants existing work experience. Career opportunities This course was developed in partnership with the IT industry in the north-west and with SITA (Specialists in air transportation communications and IT solutions) in particular. The objective of developing the course and of providing a placement is to ensure a supply of highly-skilled and experienced graduates for key employers locally and throughout Ireland. The existence of the course and the placement reflects the commitment of employers to this field of expertise. Graduates from this course can expect to find attractive employment opportunities locally and nationally. For more information on the course including testimonials from past graduates see the course webpage. 160

The MSc is a two semester taught programme in computing which focuses on topics applicable to Systems and Software Security. These are followed by a dissertation which will offer the student the opportunity to apply a range of topics covered in the taught part of the programme to demonstrate an extended knowledge and ability in that area. The dissertation will normally be completed over one to two additional semesters. From an industry point of view, this programme was developed in partnership with the IT industry in the north-west and with Pramerica in particular. The objective of developing the course is to ensure a supply of highly-skilled and experienced graduates for key employers locally and throughout Ireland. The existence of the course reflects the commitment of employers to this field of expertise. Graduates from this course can expect to find attractive employment opportunities locally and nationally. Note: Students may chose to leave the course after the first 60 (taught modules) and will obtain an exit-award of a Post-graduate Diploma in Computing in Systems and Software Security. Students who continue on to complete the dissertation will obtain an MSc in Computing in Systems and Software Security. Due to exceptionally strong demand for security graduates, students normally go straight into employment on completion of the taught part of the course so they typically do the dissertation part-time. Minimum entry requirements Applicants should have obtained an Honours Degree in Computing with first or second-class honours or an equivalent qualification which includes a significant element of IT including operating systems, data communications and programming. Career opportunities Worldwide there are about 1.5 million people working as computer security professionals and employment in this area is growing at approximately 9% per year and industry projections are that this rate of growth will continue or improve in the future. Typical employers in the computer security field include: 1 Companies running enterprise computer networks 1 The payment card industry 1 Companies involved in e-commerce 1 Financial services companies 1 Academic institutions 1 Government departments 1 Internet service providers. For more information on the course including testimonials from current students and graduates of the course see the course webpage.
