3 P a g e 3 WELCOME At Frogmore Junior School our mission statement is Creating Lifelong Learners. For the children, this means simply that we aim to provide a warm, engaging and stimulating environment that fosters tolerance and understanding, in which children are able to enjoy learning and develop a lifelong love of knowledge. Our school community is fully inclusive and all children are welcome. By valuing and celebrating their achievements and by giving them responsibilities as well as recognising their rights, we enable every child to develop self-esteem, become an independent, selfmotivated learner and realise their full potential. We are proud of our school and believe our pupils are capable of achieving high standards in both learning and behaviour. Our enthusiastic and dedicated team of staff welcomes the support of parents and the local community and encourages active interest in what we do in school. In this way the children learn to take their own part in the wider world with confidence. Frogmore Junior School s academy status, and the support of the University of Chichester Academy Trust as our academy sponsor, has opened up exciting new learning opportunities for us. 4 P a g e 4 OUR SCHOOL Our school was built in 1969 in beautiful and spacious grounds between Yateley and Blackwater. The school benefits from bright and airy classrooms, extensive landscaped grounds and sizeable playground and adventure play facilities for the children to enjoy. We share our site with Water Lilies Children s Centre, Tadpoles Preschool and Frogmore Infant School. Our parents enjoy the convenience and flexibility of extended childcare services through a breakfast and after school club on site. We have strong community links with the local parish church, sports clubs such as Darby Green Football Club, Guides, Brownies and Theatre 64. Frogmore Junior School has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere and the children mix well through the year groups as well as with their own peers. Playground Buddies and Young Leaders ensure playtimes are enjoyable for everyone, even the shyest members of our school. House System The School houses are Darby, Fitzroy, Monteagle and Kingsley. On entry to school each child is given a House to represent and can gain house points throughout the year. Many sporting and other school events allow the teams to compete, which encourages collaboration and teamwork across the year groups. The House Cup is awarded at the end of the academic year, usually following much anticipation and great excitement! School Council The School Council encourages a sense of partnership while democratic representation provides a real context for citizenship education. Pupils develop useful life-skills as well as the opportunity to have their say on current issues and suggest ways to improve their school. 5 P a g e 5 TEACHING & LEARNING Teaching at Frogmore Junior School focuses on motivating the children and building their skills, knowledge and understanding. This fosters an environment which allows all children to reach the highest level of personal achievement. Teachers regularly assess children s work and keep records of progress using this information to set tasks set appropriate to each child s ability. Lessons are planned with clear learning objectives that are shared with the children and teachers regularly liaise with the Senior Management Team for pupil progress meetings to discuss each individual child to ensure that their potential is realised. Our staff treat children with kindness, fairness and respect and each child is given equal opportunity to take part in class activities. All our teachers follow the school behaviour policy and children are expected to comply with this and the class charter to promote the best learning opportunities. Learning Support Assistants work with individuals and small groups both within and outside the classroom. With the educational expertise and support of the University of Chichester Academy Trust as academy sponsor, teachers are encouraged to continually improve their practice and plan for their professional development. Children learn in different ways and so we develop strategies that allow them to work in ways that suit them best, for example: Investigation and problem solving Group work Paired work Independent work Whole-class work Questioning Use of ICT Creative activities Guest visitors and performers Researching and finding out Academy Sponsor In September 2013 Frogmore Junior School became an academy sponsored by the University of Chichester Academy Trust. Access to expert educationalists at the University s Department of Education, as well as the professional services of the Multi- Academy Trust team, enable us to take full advantage of the freedoms of academy status and focus on excellent teaching and pastoral care for our pupils.
6 P a g e 6 THE CURRICULUM The School offers a broad, balanced and exciting curriculum. We follow the national curriculum for 7-11 year olds which is Key Stage 2. Subjects include: Religious Education English Maths Science Information Technology (ICT) and Computing Design Technology Art French History Geography Music and Drama Physical Education Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) Rights, Respect and Responsibilities (RRR) and Citizenship ICT and other facilities We have excellent ICT facilities which include wireless access throughout the school and laptops for children to work on in class. Frogmore Juniors provides many other learning opportunities and facilities including: A dedicated art and ICT room A whole school library with micro libraries in each classroom Music with Listen to Me and optional individual instrument tuition with a skilled peripatetic Teacher A broad range of sporting opportunities Drama productions. As well as our popular whole-school Christmas performance, smaller year group presentations or performances often take place throughout the year. These provide the ideal opportunity for your child to test their acting, singing and speaking skills.
7 P a g e 7 INCLUSION Offering an inclusive curriculum is a vital part of the school s vision. The class teacher provides support where necessary and challenges all learners through appropriate differentiation. Children are expected to be in school on time each day in order to achieve their best in learning. We track each child s attendance carefully and work in partnership with parents to achieve high attendance figures. The school will also work with agencies such as the Educational Welfare Office to support attendance. For some children who do not make the expected progress in class, additional support may be needed through targeted intervention programmes, either within the classroom or as part of an appropriate group outside the classroom. Where children have specific and additional educational needs, the school may provide a tailored programme of work through an IEP (individual education plan). The school aims to support children s social and emotional needs as well as their educational needs. Children may be offered additional support with our trained ELSA (emotional learning support assistant), working as part of a small group or as an individual. The school employs a range of behaviour support strategies to ensure children stay supported within school wherever possible. SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS (SEN) We provide a fully inclusive school community where all children are welcome. Every child is special and has unique talents. At Frogmore Junior School we support all children to fulfil their potential and achieve high aspirational goals. There may be times when pupils need additional or different support to ensure that they develop in all areas of learning. The Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) oversees the learning support that we have to offer to ensure that we meet the needs of all our pupils. Our school assessment processes will identify those children who need additional support. SAFEGUARDING We fully recognise our responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children at our school. We understand that children have a right to feel secure and cannot learn effectively unless they do so. Frogmore Junior School and the University of Chichester Academy Trust are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment.
8 P a g e 8 WORKING TOGETHER The first and prime educators of children are their parents We firmly believe that all our children succeed if we work together in partnership with parents. Class Teachers are available at the end of the school day for an informal chat or quick catch up or an appointment for a longer meeting can be made via school reception. Parents have a fundamental role to play in helping children to learn. The school does all it can to keep parents involved by: Holding parents evenings to discuss pupil progress Sending an annual report to explain the progress made by each child and how they can improve further Sending a regular newsletter Providing regular updates of the school website Providing lots of other opportunities for parents to engage with the school and its staff at more informal events (school plays, fundraising, information events) Role of Parents/Carers Parents have the responsibility to support their child in his or her learning. Parents should try to: Ensure their child has the best attendance record possible Ensure their child is equipped for taking part in activities Inform the school if matters outside school are likely to affect their son s and daughter s performance or behaviour in school Promote a positive attitude towards school and learning in general Fulfil the requirements set out in the home/school agreement Homework All pupils receive homework each week that supports and extends their learning. These include spellings or spelling investigations (differentiated to the child s ability), reading, researching and maths investigations. We appreciate parents making every effort to encourage their child to complete it. Volunteering We welcome parents into school to help support the work of their children s class. All volunteers will be required to complete a DBS check. The Frogmore Junior School Association (PTA) also does a huge amount to support the school and help make it the special place it is for the children. 10 P a g e 10 WHAT THE CHILDREN LOVE ABOUT THEIR SCHOOL We have good teachers who teach us something new every day Maths lessons are fun and make us think The classrooms make me feel safe I have fun with my brothers at playtime Our classrooms are colourful and pretty Young Leaders are the best I like Science I like the house cup and school trips My favourite subject is maths I like PE! I like break times and maths English because you do all sorts of writing activities & you get to write stories We have a big field and all the equipment, lots of space You can make lots of friends there are always people around The lessons challenge me to improve Our topics are great it s interesting learning about South Africa We get taught lots of new, fun things in art and I can use my imagination I like putting myself in others shoes to write about things The mix of difficulty in lessons means I feel like I can do it but sometimes I also have to try extra hard We can work together to persevere and try our best My best part about FJS is doing art lessons because I feel that I do really well My favourite thing about Frogmore Juniors is going on school trips because we learn a lot of new stuff while having fun
