1 Newington Public School 133 Nimble Hill Road Newington, New Hampshire Kindergarten School Year A curriculum guide for parents All subjects taught are aligned with state and national standards. Art Language Arts Mathematics Music Physical Education Science Social Studies Spanish Technology Our goal is to improve the personal, physical, social and academic growth of every student over time.
2 Art Art curriculum focuses on the areas of Creative Expression and Artistic Perception. Students will: Develop and strengthen basic motor skills Use a pair of scissors to cut close to a line Apply appropriate amount of glue using a glue stick with no glue showing Choose drawing materials appropriately (crayons, markers, pencils, colored pencils) Hold a paint brush appropriately Name primary colors Draw basic geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle and oval) Use basic shapes for figure drawing Understand proper use and care of art materials Tell the difference between a zigzag, straight, and wavy line Recognize a pattern and show what comes next Language Arts READING FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS Students will: Recognize rhyming words Say letter sounds represented by the single-lettered consonants and short vowels Blend and segment CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words Identify letters of the alphabet (upper and lower case) Demonstrate the one-to-one correlation between a spoken word and a printed word Start at the top left of the printed page, track words from left to right, using return sweep, and move from the top to the bottom of the page Recognize selected frequency words LITERATURE AND INFORMATIONAL TEXT - Students will: Through discussion, identify the elements of a story, including characters and setting Through discussion, identify the author s basic message Following a reading, make personal connections WRITING SKILLS- Students will: Express an idea using pictures Represent text through pictures to demonstrate understanding Name or label objects/pictures Finger space between words
3 Uses correct pencil grip\classroom/environmental print to support writing When writing, demonstrate left to right progression LANGUAGE SKILLS -Students will: Capitalize first letter in a name Uses phonemic awareness and letter knowledge to spell independently SPEAKING AND LISTENING SKILLS - Students will: Follow simple verbal instructions and directions (1-2 step commands) Attend to speaker with respectful listening Wait for appropriate turn to speak Demonstrate effective speaking behavior: Eye contact Appropriate voice volume Turn taking Respectful qualities (tone of voice) Share feelings Respond with a planned verbal answer Make connections Ask questions Orally retell a story Identify characters Identify setting Identify sequence beginning, middle and end Mathematics Students will learn mathematical concepts within the four strands of our curriculum. Topics include: Counting and Cardinality - Students will: Identify numerals to 20 Count objects from 0 to 20 by using one-to-one correspondence Order numerals 0 to 20 Write numerals 0 to 20 Count by one s to 100 Count by five s to 20 Count by ten s to 50 Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Students will: Add with manipulatives, sums up to ten Subtract with manipulatives, difference to ten Estimate and compare objects up to 20
4 Geometry - Students will: Identify a triangle and rectangle, square, circle Build or draw a triangle and rectangle, square, circle Describe shapes using number of sides as an identifying characteristic Distinguish between shapes using number of sides as identifying characteristic Measurement and Data - Students will: Identify length, width, and distance using non-conventional measures Compare objects using longer and shorter Collect, organize, record and interpret data Music The music curriculum encompasses: Artistic Perception, Creative Expression, Historical and Cultural Context, Aesthetic Valuing and Connections, Relationships and Applications. Students will: Sing: Echo sol-mi-la Play: Indefinite pitched instruments, Hand percussion instruments, Steady beat/pulse Improvise: Rhythms on hand percussion, Vocalize on pitches Compose: Not applicable Read and Notate: Not applicable Listen, Analyze, Describe: Forms (same/different), Mood Evaluate Music/Perform: Concert Etiquette Relate to the Arts: Combine music and dance History/Cultures: Listen to and sing functional music Physical Education The Physical Education curriculum covers skills in the following categories and the emphasis on development in kindergarten is noted: Basic movement- jumping, hopping, skipping, leaping, rolling, pushing/pulling, galloping Spatial awareness Movement patterns Speed Teamwork Gross motor ball rolling Fitness Dance rhythm, tempo, patterns Winter sports Offense Target sports
5 Science The science curriculum is divided into one science skills process domain and three content domains: Earth Space Science, Life science and Physical Science. Students will do science investigations focusing on various topics in the content domains. Earth Space Science - Students will: Use the daily calendar to note weather observations using the terms: sunny, cloudy, rain, snow, fog, windy and temperature Graph weather changes with teacher modeling Use senses to examine weather (i.e. weather sock, school flag, proper clothing for the weather) Life Science - Students will: Discuss what makes something alive or not alive Distinguish between plants and animals Discuss different structures of plants and animals (i.e. roots, stems, leaves, body, head, limbs) Discuss basic needs of plants and animals to stay alive Discuss and observe life cycles of at least two organisms (i.e. frog, pumpkin, trees) Discuss that all organisms need to acquire energy to survive Discuss that plants and animals need each other to survive (i.e. cow eats grass, birds nest in trees) Discuss how changes in the seasons effect how plants and animals behave Physical Science - Students will: Identify observable properties of different objects (shape) Recognize energy is necessary for change to occur in matter Describe how properties can change when a specific action is applied Understand that the motion of an object is affected by force Describe the properties of magnetism Demonstrate how magnets are used Social Studies Kindergarten students focus on the following topics during the year: Self Family Community Community Helpers The Pledge of Allegiance Holidays
6 Spanish Students are taught Spanish in kindergarten through grade two through songs, games and activities, movement, role playing, holidays and current events, and cultural celebrations. Topics include, but are not limited to: Greetings Animals & Colors Los Cinco Sentidos (the 5 senses) Numbers 1-15 Culture Technology The technology curriculum is based on the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). Performance indicators for students are in the following six categories: Creativity and Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, Research and Information Fluency, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making, Digital Citizenship, Technology Operations and Concepts. The following experiences with technology and digital resources are examples of learning activities in which students might engage during K-Grade 2. Students will: Illustrate and communicate original ideas and stories using digital tools and media-rich resources Identify, research, and collect data on a topic using digital resources and propose a developmentally appropriate solution Engage in learning activities with learners from multiple audiences through electronic means In a collaborative work group, use a variety of technologies to produce a digital presentation or product in a curriculum area Find and evaluate information using digital resources Demonstrate safe and cooperative use of technology Use simulations and graphic organizers Demonstrate the ability to navigate in virtual environments such as electronic books, simulation software, and Web sites Independently apply digital tools and resources to address a variety of tasks and problems Communicate about technology using developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology
