17 THE COMPLETE CITY ARCHITECTURE The development of Carlsberg City District reflects the area s existing neighbourhoods in relation to building heights, facades and choice of building materials and colour scheme. We will ensure a high level of quality in the new buildings, similar to the existing buildings, but we will use modern materials. 15 % of the existing buildings will remain in the complete city. 18 THE COMPLETE CITY RESIDENCES 3,500 residences in total dispersed throughout the city district: Some in residential areas near Frederiksberg and some in urban areas alongside shops, restaurants, office spaces, schools, day care centres, cultural and sport facilities 2,900 private residences 200 family homes and 400 student housing (public housing) In 2016/2017 the first residences, located in the area north of Ny Carlsberg Vej, will be ready for occupation PAGE 18

The purpose of The Boiler House was originally to replace five different boiler houses. 48 CITY LIFE AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES Buildings alone don t make a city We wish to create a city district where life is lived both in and outside the buildings Thus, what happens between the buildings, the city life, is an integral part of our strategy for the construction of the city district Our approach to creating life in the city can be divided into three phases The temporary city The construction phase The complete city PAGE 48

49 CITY LIFE AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES THE TEMPORARY CITY Temporary city life is the first phase of the development project This phase is highly value-creating in relation to keeping the city going and e.g. avoiding graffiti, vandalism and squatters It is also valuable in relation to creating publicity and awakening people s desire to live in the city district A strategy for temporary city life is an advantage for urban development projects. It doesn t generate profits, but it can provide grants for the operations PAGE 49

50 CITY LIFE AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES THE CONSTRUCTION PHASE How? We have established two advisory boards one for the development of the open city spaces in the city district and one for the development of engaging activities in the city district The purpose is to engage with neighbours, local resources and other stakeholders to encourage them to co-develop the open spaces and create engaging activities that residents and visitors to the city district and surrounding neighbourhoods can enjoy. The advisory boards consist of neighbours, future residents, local councils and local resources linked to culture and city life PAGE 50

51 CITY LIFE AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES THE COMPLETE CITY Our goals for city life and cultural activities We want to make Carlsberg City District a place where cultural institutions want to stay and where a vibrant city life will flourish We want to ensure diversity in the recreational and cultural activities that we offer, so that as many people as possible are attracted to our area We want to be an active part of Copenhagen through relations with the surrounding neighbourhoods in Copenhagen, Valby and Frederiksberg PAGE 51
