1 WALL PENETRATION FLASHING KIT US Patent # 7,568,314B2 1. DESCRIPTION A Polyguard Wall Penetration Flashing Kit (WPF) is a gasket system designed to seal air and water from entering a structure through annular openings in a backing wall, around above grade pipes, ducts, and wire penetrations. It is designed to comply with The International Energy Conservation Code Section for air tight and water resistant walls at wall penetrations. Polyguard Type II Wall Penetration Flashing Kits consist of the same pieces found in Type I Kits with two additional special shaped pieces of 606 Tape. These special shapes are called Dog Bones and are used for sealing between wires that share the same hole in a backing wall i.e. three wires through the same hole. 4. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES 2. LIMITATIONS None when used for the design purpose. 3. MATERIALS AND COMPOSITION Thickness: Primary waterproofing piece Parts 3 & 5 Protective cover set Parts 1, 2, & 4 60mils 25 mils/pc. Water Vapor Transmission ASTM-E-96 B US Perms <.02 Low Temperature Pliability ASTM D 146 No Cracking at 15 deg. F. Peel Adhesion ASTM D 1000 to primed steel >5.0 lbs / inch of width Elongation-Ultimate Failure of Rubberized Asphalt ASTM d 412 Modified Die C > 500% Polyguard Type I Wall Penetration Flashing Kits consist of six pieces: three pieces, #1, #2, & #4 are a polyethylene laminated waterproofing membrane with a disposable release sheet; two pieces, #3 & #5 are 60mil flexible and reinforced modified asphalt tape protected with disposable release sheets (606Tape) and; and one piece, #6 is a plastic termination strip. 5. CHEMICAL RESISTANCE The asphalt in these products is not compatible in direct contact with uncured urethane and cured or uncured silicone. Where a sealant is needed use Polyguard Detailing Sealant. 6. TECHNICAL DATA Polyguard Products, Inc. provides design data and installation instructions to architects, engineers, specifiers, and contractors. 7. INSTALLATION: Storage: Protect the material from heat, crushing, moisture, mud, and construction dirt. Keep the kits packaged until they will be used. For best results, the material should be stored between 50 to 75 degrees F prior to application.

2 Preparation; Prepare the surfaces that will receive the Kits so that they will be: clean; dry; free from irregularities that could puncture the flashing membrane and with a uniform surface for supporting the flashing. Safety: Material Safety Data Sheets are available upon by phone, , or on the web. Product Attachment: Install a kit after the penetration has been installed and before the exterior finish is applied. Test for adhesion of each layer before installing the next piece. If the first and second pieces will not adhere aggressively to the substrate, apply Polyguard 650 LT Liquid Adhesive, Polyguard California Sealant, or 343 Spray Adhesive to substrates compatible with solvent based materials or Water Based Polyguard Shur-Tac Liquid Adhesive to substrates that are not compatible with solvent based materials. If pieces 3 through 5 will not adhere aggressively to the previous piece, apply a tact coat of Polyguard 343 Spray Adhesive to the related surface. Where the annular space around a penetration is greater than 1-inch, apply spray foam into the space. After the foam has dried trim it flush with the face of the backing wall, this will provide the necessary support for the flashing material. Installing a TYPE I Round or Wire Wall Penetration Flashing Kit (pipe shown). NOTES for TYPE I Kits: If a single penetration is in a hole, then proceed with a Type I Kit. If, multiple wires share the same hole, then proceed with a Type II Kit. See the chart in Section 10 for available sizes. For surface mounted electric boxes: drill the backing wall to receive the wire, insert the wire(s), install the Wall Penetration Flashing Kit, and then install the surface mounted electric box. If there is a fastened air barrier of any kind covering the backing wall, cut it 1-1/2-inches below the penetration to a centered length that matches the width of the kit being installed and then, along each end of the bottom cut, cut upward for a distance that will be about 1-inch above the where the top edge of the kit will be. Fold and secure it in an upward position to expose the backing wall. After the WPF has been installed, drape the folded air barrier section over the WPF and apply air barrier tape continuously along the side edges and with the skiptape method along the bottom edge. If there is an adhered or spray applied air barrier on the backing wall, apply the WPF parts over that material following the termination sequencing in the instructions. When the WPF is being used as part of a Polyguard Air Barrier System, apply a bead of Polyguard Detailing Sealant around the interior side of the opening after the kit has been installed. TYPE I Round Wall Penetration Flashing Kit 1. Select a WPF Kit sized to the penetration. 2. Remove the release paper from Part 1 and center and adhere the part under the penetration with the arched part of the cutout touching the underside of the penetration. 3. Remove the release paper from Part 2 and center and adhere the part over the penetration with the arched part of the cutout touching the topside of the penetration. 4. Mark a line around the penetration 1-8-inch behind where the face of the exterior finish will be located. 5. Remove the release paper from one side of the Part 3. Orient the part with the exposed side facing the wall and with the penetration edge either 1-inch onto the penetration or along the line marked around the penetration whichever is closer to the wall. Maintain that edge position on the penetration and shape and adhere Part 3 to the wall and penetration. 6. Peel down 2-inches of release paper from along the top edge of Part 4. (The top edge does not have a slit in it.) Locate the exposed top corners of Part 4 over the face of the top corners of Part 2. In this aligned position, adhere the top edge of Part 4 to and along the top edge of Part 2. Separate the bottom edge along the slit. Peel away the release paper from along one of the side edges of Part 4 and align and adhere that side edge along the side edge of Part 2. Moving inward toward the penetration from the adhered top and side edges, shape and adhere Part 4 onto Part 2 and then onto Part 3 and around the penetration. Remove the release paper as the process progresses. Align and adhere the remaining side edge of Part 4 onto the side edge of Part 2 and then shape and adhere it inward from the side and onto Part 3 and the penetration. 7. Apply pressure over the face of the installed flashing with a J-style rubber roller. 8. Repeat the instructions in Step 5 and then proceed to Step 9.

3 9. Install Part 6 along the top edge of the flashing using fasteners suitable for the substrate. Space the fasteners to keep the part flat against the flashing. 10.
