1 NAME DATE Home Connection 16 H Activity NOTE TO FAMILIES For the past few weeks, we ve been working on our basic multiplication facts at school. Instead of just memorizing the facts, we have been making sense of them by thinking about situations when we use multiplication in daily life. We have also been exploring strategies for remembering how to solve multiplication facts. In the book Solving Multiplication Facts, you ll see story problems and strategies that can help your child make sense of and master the basic multiplication facts. As always, these strategies are shown in picture form too, using the rectangular array model that is explained at the beginning of the book. Instructions for Solving Multiplication Facts Book Please read the book Solving Multiplication Facts with your child. If your child is not able to read it, you can certainly read it aloud to him or her. The book invites you and your child to think of multiplication facts and sketch illustrations or write problems about them. These activities are meant to get you and your child involved and talking with each other about math. We encourage you to do them with your child and keep the book at home for future reference. Please sign and return this sheet when you have finished reading the book. Signature_ Date Bridges in Mathematics 99

4 Home Connection 18 H Activity NOTE TO FAMILIES This week s card game gives students practice with their multiplication facts. The game uses a variety of models for multiplication including the array model, counting patterns, and equal groups. Remind your child to complete the worksheet and return it to school. Instructions for Multiplication Draw 1 Shuffle the cards and place them face down between both players. 2 Each player draws a card and figures out the solution. The solution might be the solution to a multiplication fact, a missing number in a counting pattern, the total area of an array, or the total number of objects in equal groups. 5 Continue drawing cards until there are no cards left. Then determine how many cards each player has. Can you count the cards by 2 s or 3 s to make it faster? The player with the most cards wins! 12, 16, 20, What is the total area? 3 Make sure both partners agree on the solutions. 4 The player whose solution is greater takes both cards. Midori Mom, your solution is 24, because it s adding 4 each time. The area of my array is 36, so I win! Bridges in Mathematics 103

12 NAME DATE Home Connection 18 H Worksheet NOTE TO FAMILIES This worksheet gives students practice with some of the more difficult multiplication facts. You could encourage your child to use the 5 facts to help solve the 6 facts on this page and the 10 facts to help solve the 9 facts on the back. Refer to your Solving Multiplication Facts book if you need to review how these strategies work. The worksheet also provides some challenge with division facts if your child wants to try division, but students are not required to complete the division problems. Multiplying by 5, 6, 9 & 10 1 Circle all the clock facts ( 5) in blue. Then go back and do them. 2 Circle all the clock facts plus 1 set facts ( 6) in red. 14 Home Connection 19 H Activity NOTE TO FAMILIES This week s game provides practice rounding to the nearest hundred. When rounding a number to the nearest hundred, look at the number in the tens place. For example, 348 rounded to the nearest hundred is 300, because 348 is closer to 300 than it is to 400. On the other hand, 383 rounded to the nearest hundred would be 400. When the number in the tens place is 5, we round up, so that 250 rounded to the nearest hundred is 300. When you have finished the game, have your child complete the worksheet and return it and the game record sheet to school. You ll need a record sheet, the nine number cards, a piece of scratch paper, and a pen and pencil or two different colored pencils or pens for recording. Instructions for Round Ball Hundreds 1 Mix up the cards and place them face down in a deck or spread out. 2 The first player draws 3 cards at random and arranges them to make a 3-digit number. In the example below, 8, 4, and 6 could be used to make 864, 846, 684, 648, 486, or 468. If you rounded 846 to the nearest 100, it would be 800. You would record 846 in the basketball hoop marked 800. Home Connections NAME Home Connection 19 Activity (cont.) The second player draws 3 cards, arranges them, rounds the number to nearest hundred, and records his or her number in the appropriate basket using a different color pen or pencil. 4 Continue taking turns drawing 3 cards each and deciding how to arrange the numbers and then round the 3-digit number. If you can t make a number for a hoop where you haven t written a number yet, you miss the turn. Remember to return your cards to the deck after each turn. 5 The first person to get 1 number in each basket wins. 20 Home Connection 20 H Activity NOTE TO FAMILIES This week you and your child will take turns drawing at least two number cards that you ll add together to get as close to 200 as you can. The object of the game is to be the player who comes closest to 200. This game will provide some additional practice with 2- and 3-digit addition and subtraction. Remind your child to complete the worksheet and return it to school, along with with the 3 record sheets. You ll need a deck of Make 200 Cards, a record sheet, and two pencils. Instructions for Make Get a deck of Make 200 Cards to share. Shuffle the cards and place them face down between you. 2 You ll each fill out your own grids on the same paper. 3 Take 2 cards and turn them face up. Estimate the sum of the amounts shown on the two cards. Record the two numbers in the boxes below the grids and color in the amounts on your grids. Use a different color for each number. Color in both grids completely before you start using the strips and units on the right. Now the other player draws 2 cards and does the same. 5 You and your partner each need to decide for yourselves whether you ll draw a third card or whether you will hold. 6 When you have both drawn a third card or decided to hold, fill in your totals and figure out how far over or under 200 you both are. The player who is closest to 200 wins. 7 Use the other two record sheets to play two more rounds together. Home Connections NAME Emma Home Connection 20 Activity (cont.)
