Click the tool, then click Auto on the Options bar for Photoshop to automatically locate red eyes and correct them. If Photoshop doesn t detect the eyes properly, you can drag the mouse to select the area of the photo containing the red eyes. About Healing and Cloning Photoshop s retouching tools use two methods to clean up bad/damaged areas of photos, or to remove or replace unwanted content. You can think of them as special brush tools that let you paint out flaws. Cloning patches bad areas by completely replacing them with good areas found elsewhere in the photo. It uses a soft edged brush to avoid a distinct boundary line. Healing blends the pixels from the good area into the pixels surrounding the bad area. Page 1 of 5

2 Spot Healing Brush ( ): Stacked with the Healing Brush Tool. It removes small blemishes with one click. Select a brush size similar to the blemish, then click on top of it (or paint with it to affect a wider area). The blemish is replaced with pixels based on those in nearby areas. The Spot Healing Brush has three modes of operation: Proximity Match, Create Texture, and Content Aware. The repair at the right was performed by clicking the mouse several times along the pen line, which healed out each part of the line. Its main difference from the Spot Healing Brush is that with the Healing Brush you can choose any area of the photo as the good area, not just those around the problem area. Pixels from your chosen source are blended with those in the problem area. After selecting the Healing Brush, place the mouse pointer in a good area and Alt+Click Ugly light fixture spoils dramatic photo of Egyptian minaret (click the mouse with the Alt key on the keyboard held down). This sets the source for the new pixels. Next, move the mouse pointer to the problem area and paint over the target. When you release the mouse there may be a short wait until you see the results. Light fixture seamlessly removed with Healing Brush Source ( Good Area ) set by Alt+click Destination/Target Clone Stamp ( ): Stacked with the Pattern Stamp Tool. This tool operates very much like the Healing Brush. Set the source area by using Alt+Click, then paint over the target area. Instead of blending, the new pixels just replace the old ones. Hint: Make your healing or cloning changes on a separate layer. Create a new transparent layer, click Sample All Layers in the Options bar, and use the Healing Brush or Clone Stamp as above. This preserves the original version of the image; you can edit the cloned pixels (change their opacity, erase parts of the cloned area, etc.), which gives you more control over your photo. 3 Pattern Stamp ( ): Stacked with Clone Stamp. Instead of copying one part of a photo over another, this tool paints over the image with a pattern chosen from Photoshop s pattern gallery. Select the Pattern Stamp and choose a pattern, then paint it over the image. Blur/Sharpen/ Smudge These three tools are stacked together. Blur ( ): This tool does the opposite of sharpening; it softens and blurs pixels along edge lines. It is useful for airbrushing wrinkles and softening the appearance of flaws. Normal Blur Sharpen ( ): The Sharpen tool is for sharpening isolated areas of a photo, in contrast to the Unsharp Mask, etc. (Editor 2) which sharpen the whole photo. Paint the tool over an area you want sharpened. Be careful it s very easy to overdo! Smudge Sharpen Smudge ( ): This tool simulates the effect of dragging a finger through wet paint. Higher Strength settings make the stroke last longer. You can also click the Finger Painting box on the Options bar to add a touch of the foreground color to each stroke (example shows a turquoise color smudged in.) Sponge/ Dodge/Burn These three tools are stacked together. Sponge ( ): Lets you increase or decrease saturation on a specific area of the photo. Select the tool, choose Saturate or Desaturate on the Options bar, and paint the desired area of the image. Normal Sponge: Desaturate Burn Dodge Dodge ( ): Use this tool to lighten areas of the image and bring Sponge: Saturate out details hidden in the shadows. You may want to dodge and burn on a duplicate image layer, so you can blend the effect by controlling that layer s opacity. A drop down box on the Options Bar lets you choose to dodge highlights, midtones or shadows. Burn ( ): The exact opposite of Dodge: this tool darkens the area you paint with its brush. Page 3 of 5

4 The Recompose Tool ( ) This tool is stacked with the Crop tool. It lets you get rid of selected parts of pictures and keep others, while making sure the photo doesn t look distorted (and it s even easy to use): When you select the Recompose Tool, you will see four icons on the Options bar: You automatically start with the green brush. Use this to paint over people/objects you want to keep. If you make a mistake, use the green eraser to remove it. To mark areas for removal (your daughter s exboyfriend, for instance), paint them with the red brush; stray red marks can be removed with the red eraser. Once your areas are marked, resize the image using the handles at the left or right side of the photo. As you shrink the overall width, your green areas will get closer together, while Elements intelligently attempts to delete and blend the background. Kate and William are sitting too far apart in the coach. Kate and William are marked for keeping; everything else is optional. After resizing, the happy couple appears closer. Other features in the photo have been unobtrusively removed. Page 4 of 5

5 Corrections using the Smart Brush Tool The Smart Brush is one of Photoshop Elements newer tools. It combines the Quick Selection tool s selecting style with a number of pre-programmed enhancements, grouped into categories. Some of these are: Black and White: Converts areas of your photo to black and white according to your choice of contrast settings. Lighting: Correct exposure problems by ramping the contrast and brightness up and down. Nature: Make bland or flat landscape photos look more vibrant and interesting. Photographic: Simulates the appearance of tintypes, sepia toned photos, negatives, etc. Portrait: Optimize faces by brightening eyes and teeth, adding lipstick or a spray tan, etc. Full color original Whenever the smart brush is selected, pins appear marking any previously-applied effects. Click a pin to edit the effect. Final result: everything but the woman and the greyhound is black-and-white Page 5 of 5
