1 L I F E INFLUENCE CONCEPT 2 WEEK 6 INFLUENCE People influence your life You are influenced and impacted by the people around you. People are constantly shaping, directing, and building into your life and future. Some people have a positive influence upon you, bringing life, hope, and healing. Others have a destructive influence, crushing your spirit and bringing death to your goals and dreams. ASK YOURSELF Do the people you spend the most time with reflect who you are and who you want to become? Do you have friends that may be holding you back from accomplishing your goals and dreams? If so, what can you do to change that? Ambassadors of Compassion have like-minded friends who can help them keep their self-talk positive and can help them on those days when they need positive support and encouragement. Does this statement cause you to reconsider some of the friends you have in your life? Before you begin this lesson, take some time to really think about the quality of your friendships. Spanish Proverb CALL TO ACTION # 1 To be completed for your next Ambassadors of Compassion team meeting: Check Your Life: Be really honest with yourself as you think about the various people in your life who are influencing you the most. It might be difficult at first to think about the people you spend time with in this way, but the more honest you are with yourself about how other people make you feel and how they may influence your actions and attitude, the more powerfully this lesson can impact your life and future. To begin, make a list of the people you spend the most time with in your life, including your friends and family, and then evaluate the quality of your relationship with each person by using the following two checklists. Positive Influence: Makes me feel safe Supports my goals Cares about my future Tells me the truth Has a positive outlook on life Is available when I need help Uses positive words Cares about others Negative Influence: Makes me feel unsafe Does not support my goals Does not care about my future Is not truthful with me Has a negative outlook on life Does not care about me Uses negative words Primarily cares about himself PAGE 38

3 NFLUENC List the people in your life with whom you spend the most time and mentally evaluate each person as to whether they have a more positive or a more negative influence upon your life. Be honest with yourself. Edit Your Life: Take control of your life when it comes to the people with whom you spend the most time. There s a saying that goes, You are the company that you keep. Simply put, you may end up becoming like the people you hang out with the most. So be honest with yourself about your friends and choose them wisely. 1. Look around you... and identify the negative and destructive people who may keep you from achieving your goals and dreams. List these people below. These are people who always make you feel inferior, tear you down, are abusive, or tell you that you will never succeed in life. This is your first step in setting boundaries to protect your life, your dreams, and your goals. PAGE 39

4 2. Now that you have made your list, decide how you will begin the process to edit these negative people from your life. Write your action plan for setting boundaries with some of these people. Include how you plan to start to eliminate the time you spend with them. If you find yourself unable to do this on your own, seek the help of a trusted friend, family member, or your Team Coach who can help you set boundaries and hold you accountable for keeping them. 3. Identify and list the positive and encouraging people in your life. Who do you need to spend more time with? 4. Write your action plan of how you will create more opportunities to surround yourself daily with these positive people. And don t be afraid to ask for their help. Remember, positive and encouraging people will be a major contributor to your success and well-being. PAGE 40

5 CALL TO ACTION # 2 To be completed for your next Ambassadors of Compassion team meeting: NFLUENC Something to Remember: In this week s lesson we have been talking about influence and how people influence our lives. The other side of that same coin is that we influence others. What kind of influence are you having on your friends, family members, classmates, and the other people with whom you constantly interact? How much do your choices, words, and actions breathe life or destruction on those around you? What can you do to be a more positive influence on others? Do you treat others the way you want to be treated by them? 1. Begin to think about how you influence others, both positively and negatively. What can you do this week to be a more positive influence on those around you? 2. What are the words and subtle messages that you use that hurt people or influence them negatively? PAGE 41

6 3. What are some positive words and actions you can use to encourage and build up those around you? This week look for opportunities to speak positively into the lives of others. People influence your life and you influence them in return. Part of the influence they have upon you, and the influence you have upon them, often times brings hurt and the need for forgiveness. Next week we will introduce the concept, Face It, Release It, Replace It.
