3 Learner Objectives The learner will be able to: Discuss change theory Describe the Leader s role Analyze strategies to implement change Describe QSEN teaching strategies
4 It s all about change! Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Personal Change Management Organizational Change Management Both are needed to effect lasting change
5 Remembering the key elements of Driving Forces Change Theory Those that push in a direction that causes change to occur Restraining forces Those that counter driving forces Equilibrium The state of being where driving forces equals restraining and no change occurs
6 Kurt Lewin s Change Theory Stages of change Unfreezing: defining the why for the change Moving to a new level of change in thoughts, feelings and behavior Refreezing: establishing change as a new habit (Standard Operating Procedure) Change must be realistic, achievable and measureable.
7 The Leader s role taking people on a journey on which nobody wants to go (Disch) Develop a comprehensive and detailed plan for communication of the change: Who needs to be informed? Who needs to be involved? What are the barriers? What is the dissemination plan? What is the evaluation plan? Share in small groups your plan based on above
8 Sharing Strategies Let s share some common considerations that you discussed!
9 Aligning Leadership Sponsors: have the power to sanction change Agents: are responsible for making the change happen Advocates or champions: opinion leaders can be informal leaders Those expected to change
10 Barriers to Consider Too many initiatives happening at once The theme of the day or This too shall pass A history of resistance to change There is no need to change This is already covered in other courses Issues of academic freedom
11 Sharing Strategies Let s take a moment to share some strategies to address some of these barriers to change
12 QSEN Teaching Considerations Enthusiasm is contagious Role model the use of these competencies Whenever possible, the work should be interactive Have the class work in small groups as much as possible Consider experiential approaches Cite clinical research examples
13 QSEN Teaching Strategies Allow students to choose their clinical interest area to conduct evidence analysis Teach how to critique available research in the subject area (particularly nursing) Invite guest speakers to share a relevant case study Develop researchable questions in a fun way
14 The QSEN Path Forward We can t hope to make lasting changes in the ability of health care systems to improve without changes in the ways we develop future health professionals. Those changes require faculty and schools to change. Paul Batalden Dartmouth College QSEN Advisory Board
