1 FIRST AND LAST NAME DEMOCRACY PREP DATE SUBJECT CLASS/HOMEROOM Persuasion 2.19 Mad Minute Suffixes Rule 1 Normally, in words that end in a silent e you must drop the e before you add a vowel suffix (i.e. cure + able = curable.) However, when a word ends in ce or ge, keep the e IF the suffix begins with a, o, or u. 2 Class Notes Aim: SWBAT 1. Review the grammar midterm and defend their answers by identifying the rule that aligns with their answer. Active and Passive Rule Box Passive Voice: The object of the action functions as the sentence subject; The main verb phrase includes a form of the verb to be; a past participle (verb stem/main verb + - ed/- en). Example: The car was fixed (by the mechanic). Indefinite Pronouns as Antecedents Rule 1: Singular indefinite pronoun antecedents take singular pronoun referents. SINGULAR: another, anybody, anyone, anything, each, everybody, everyone, everything, one, neither, nobody, no one, nothing, somebody, someone, and something Rule 2: Plural indefinite pronoun antecedents require plural referents. PLURAL: both, few, many, others, and several Rule 3: Some indefinite pronouns may be singular or plural. It all depends on the noun it stands for. When the antecedent is one of the indefinite pronouns that can be either singular or plural, look at the noun at the end of the prepositional phrase. Use a singular pronoun when the noun at the end of the prepositional phrase is singular, and use a plural pronoun when the noun at the end of the prepositional phrase is plural. SINGULAR/PLURAL: all, any, either, little, none, some, more, and most 2

3 Class Notes Colons When to Use a Colon: There are two main uses for the colon in everyday writing. Both require an independent clause, also known as a complete sentence, before the colon. The first use is when introducing a list. The second is when introducing an explanation or example. Colons can also be used to separate a book title from its subtitle (Punctuation: A Useful Guide), as part of a business letter salutation (To Whom It May Concern:), and of course between the hour and minute in time notation (3:30 p.m.) Semicolons A semicolon can also be used before a transition (connecting) word or phrase. The transition words you are probably most familiar with include however, therefore, hence, thus, consequently, nevertheless and meanwhile. 3
