1 1 The purpose of this project is to learn the fundamentals of SketchUp. You are going to create a coffee table. You will find the large tool set helpful for this project this can be found in the view menu, under tool palettes. Save your work frequently! Using the Rectangle tool, draw a 3 x6 rectangle for the table top. Without clicking anything else, type in 3,6 then enter (fig. 1). The rectangle will resize to the dimensions you have typed in. If you type in 3,6 then enter, SketchUp will make a rectangle of 3 x6. Fig 1 Using the Orbit tool and holding down the left mouse button, or by holding down the middle scroll wheel on the mouse, move over the table top to change viewing positions (fig. 2). Fig 2 Select the Push/Pull tool and place it over the top of the coffee table top. Note that the top will appear textured when it is selected. Hold down the left mouse button and drag the Table Top up to give it thickness. Type.75 and then enter (fig. 3) this will set the thickness to 3/4. Fig 4 Select the Measure tool from the side icons and select an edge of the underside of the Top. Hold down the left mouse button and drag a guide line in from that edge (Make sure that stay on the axis (Green) (fig. 5) and type 3 then enter. Repeat this for all four sides (fig. 6). Fig 5 Fig 6

2 2 Select the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle starting from the intersection of the two guide lines (fig 7). Type 3,3 then press enter the resulting rectangle is 3 x3 (fig. 8). Fig 7 Fig 8 With the Select took, select the rectangle you just drew. Select the Move tool and left mouse button click on the rectangle on the corner shown (fig. 9). Selected corner positions easily at the intersection of the guide lines. Hold down the Ctrl key on the keyboard (Option on a mac) and with the Move tool drag the rectangle. A copy is made leaving the original in place as you position the copy (fig. 10). Repeat this for the remaining legs (fig. 11). Fig 9 Fig 10 Fig 11 Fig 12 Select Push/Pull and drag down the leg rectangle and type 32 then press enter (fig. 12). Double click on the other three legs with the Push/Pull tool to repeat the same effect (fig. 13). Fig 13

3 3 Use the Erase tool to erase the guide lines. Orbit the coffee table over so that it is the same as fig. 14. Fig 14 Select the Line tool and draw a line as sown in fig. 15. Make sure that you are on the correct axis (the line must be vertical, you should see a colored dotted line as you draw which indicates the axis you are on. Magnify the area if you need to). Fig 15 Select the Arc tool and draw an arc as shown in fig. 16. Click the top edge of your line, then the bottom edge, then drag out away from the line. The guide line takes on the color of the axis you are dragging through. NOTE: the arc must be on the axis perpendicular to the table top, so you may need to orbit the table to better position it to achieve this. With the Select tool select the top of the table top (fig. 17). Fig 16 Fig 18 Fig 17 Using the Follow Me (available in the large tool palette set, or from the tools pull down menu), move over the the molding profile (fig.18). The molding will automatically extrude around the top of the table top (fig.19). Fig 19 Using the Measure tool create a guide line 3 up from the base of the leg (fig. 20). Using the Rectangle tool draw a rectangle 1 wide x 3 tall (fig. 20). Type 1,3 then press enter. If you type 1,3 enter and the rectangle reshapes in the wrong way, type 3,1 enter.

4 4 Fig 21 A Fig 21 B Fig 21 C With the Select tool, select the rectangle you just drew. Use the Move tool to pick the rectangle in the center at the bottom edge (fig. 21A). Move the rectangle along the guideline slightly (this sets the direct of movement). With the rectangle still selected, pass the Move tool across the bottom center, a black dot will form (fig. 21B). Move straight down and click on the bottom of the leg (fig. 21B). Now move toward the midpoint on the bottom of the leg the rectangle will follow the motion. A blue dot will appear at the midpoint, click to set the position of the rectangle (fig. 21C). Fig 22 Pick 1 Pick 2 Make sure the rectangle is still selected. Use the Move tool with the Ctrl key held down to move the a copy of the rectangle to the other leg (fig. 22). Pressing the Ctrl key is how the copy is generated. A colored dotted line will show you which access you are moving along.

5 5 Using the Push/Pull drag the first rectangle forward to form a rail. Touch the edge of the leg that the rail is to be connect to (fig. 23). Fig 23 Double click on the other rectangle with the Push/Pull tool and it will move forward the same amount as the last Push/Pull distance (fig. 24). Fig 24 Repeat the process to create the other rails (fig. 25). Fig 25 Create a rectangle 3 from the side of the leg on the rail 1 T x 3 W. Position the rectangle similar to fig 26. Fig 26 Select all of the rectangle with the Select tool (be careful not to select other lines or objects in the background) and right click with the mouse and select Make Component (fig. 27), or click the Make Component icon in the large tool set. Fig 29 Type 12x and enter to get an array of rectangles along the rail (fig. 30). Note: If 12x is too many type 11x etc., until you get the required number of copies. ALTERNATIVE: If you do not have an exact number assigned to you, copy the rectangle using the Move tool and Ctr key, and drag the copy to the other end of the rail, positioning it 3 from the leg. Then type /10. This will create 9 additional copies, spacing them equally between the original and the copy you dragged into position. Fig 30

7 7 Double click on the first rectangle so that you activate the component (fig. 31). Fig 31 Fig 32 Now Push/Pull the first shelf rectangle toward the opposite rail. You will now see all the rails move at once (fig. 32) this is because components have a parametric link between each copy. Select the Paint Bucket tool and the finishes window will open. Select Interior finishes and wood finish (fig. 33). Fig 33 Drag and drop the wood texture onto the coffee table (fig. 34). Note: holding down the Ctrl key will paint all the table at once (use command A to select all on a Mac). Fig 34

8 8 Draw a Rectangle on the table top (fig. 35A) Fig 35A and use Push/Pull to extrude a hole in the top (fig. 35B). 1 2 With the Line tool draw a line across point 1 and point 2 (fig. 35B). Fig 35B This will fill in the top surface and you can now use the Paint Bucket to drop a transparent color onto it (fig. 36). Fig 36
