1 meat and potatoes Food tracking goes high-tech How do you track 8 million pounds of food? That was the - wonderful - challenge Forgotten Harvest was facing one short year ago. Thanks to a collaborative effort between Kettering University in Flint and consulting firm C & C Logistics of Canton, tracking food donations has gotten a whole lot easier for our Harvesters. In fact, Forgotten Harvest will be the first food rescue organization in the country to utilize an automated i n v e n t o r y tracking system. Tracking a million pounds of food by hand Hand-held tracking took the assistance device of several people inputting the data and was difficult to manage, said Susan Goodell, Forgotten Harvest s executive director. But as we continued to grow so rapidly over the past five years, it was apparent we needed a smarter and more efficient method to track food donations. Through Kettering s Cooperative Education & Career Services program, students rotate internships at Forgotten Harvest working to write the intricate software for the tracking devices. This project is just one important part of a larger transformation for Forgotten Harvest, which is currently experiencing phenomenal growth, said Tom Cihonski, principal partner with C & C Logistics. Metro Detroit s only food rescue organization Driving Hunger from our community since 1990 continued on page 2 Harvest News Fall Kroger rescue project at 100% participation crop 2006 Funders support program with trucks and financial support What started as a small pilot program has now grown to the largest and most comprehensive grocery chain rescue project in the nation. Kroger Great Lakes initiated their partnership with Forgotten Harvest in 2004 with two stores and the intention to add more stores if successful. Beginning in June, Forgotten Harvest is now picking up their surplus perishable and prepared food from all of their locations - 67 total - in the tri-county area on a daily basis. Kroger is committed to fighting hunger and bringing hope to the communities that our customers and associates call home, said Bruce Macaulay, president, The Kroger Company Great Lakes Division. We are especially proud of the fact that all Kroger stores within the tri-county area participate in the Forgotten Harvest donation program. Food donated by Kroger has been comprised largely of nutritious fresh meat, dairy products, fruit juice, and fruits and vegetables some of the most difficult items to get onto the plates of hungry people due to their cost and highly perishable nature. As more Kroger stores were added, Forgotten Harvest worked diligently inside dish: to target more of the pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens serving the hungriest members of the tri-county community. Securing a large rescue project such as Kroger is a major accomplishment for Forgotten Harvest. The efficiencies and procedures that are carried out by our Harvesters are paramount to building trust between Forgotten Harvest and the food donor. But when a major grocery chain food donor such as Kroger comes on board, the real work begins. The Development Department goes into high gear seeking funding for trucks, drivers salaries, insurance and gas to support the rescue project. In fact, it took two and a half years to build the infrastructure to acquire the resources for our Kroger project. Forgotten Harvest is poised and ready to identify, rescue and deliver fresh food to those who need it most, said Susan Goodell, Forgotten Harvest s executive director. We are indebted to our food donors and financial contributors who make our mission and work possible. Please see This Season s Harvest on page 5 for a list of funders who made the Kroger Project possible. 3 Special Event highlights 4 AFPD One Million Pound Challenge 4 Food Donor Highlight - Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace 5 This Season s Harvest Page 3 - Champagne Cruise a great success!

2 Food tracking goes high-tech (cont. from page 1) With the organization s 42 percent increase in growth, automation and standardization of processes and business functions are critical for FH s plan to move forward and distribute even more food to the hungry in Southeast Michigan. In addition to providing mentorship to the Kettering students, C & C Logistics consultation donation has resulted in logistical advice on managing Forgotten Harvest s fleet of trucks and drivers, food industry insight and experience, and efficiencies in donor acknowledgements. While their to-do list grows, Forgotten Harvest s operations have become more automated and streamlined. A few units began operating in June, but more were needed to service Forgotten Harvest s entire fleet. Financial support including an $8,000 grant from The Thomas Foundation helped secure three additional devices. Most recently, a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation enabled the project to be fully operational. C & C Logistics has been such a valued partner to Forgotten Harvest, they were honored with the Star Award on June 8th at the Comedy Night benefit in recognition of their expert advice, their resourcefulness, and their tireless dedication. If you would like to help advance this project, please contact Tom Cihonski at Watch us GROW Forgotten Harvest has had quite a growth spurt over the past few years. As our food donations have grown in pounds, we are proud to report that our rescue/delivery cost per pound of 15 cents is the lowest of any food rescue organization in the country. Forgotten Harvest never charges for the delivery of donated food. Comedy Night Corporate Sponsors Presenting Sponsors DaimlerChrysler JWT Panera Bread Event Sponsors ArvinMeritor, Inc. Comerica, Inc. 5 Food Donor Spotlight As their regular customers will attest, shopping at Nino Salvaggio is more an experience than simply an errand. Row after row of perfectly selected fresh fruits and vegetables, choice meats, and a wonderful selection of dairy and bakery products are what Nino shoppers come to expect. As a Forgotten Harvest food donor, it is also what our recipient agencies are grateful to receive. The fresh food market has locations in St. Clair Shores, Troy, Farmington Hills and Clinton Township. All began donating their surplus food in January Since joining Forgotten Harvest, they have provided close to 1,000,000 pounds of food. eat. The addition of Nino Salvaggio to Forgotten Harvest s growing list of food donors has helped increase the fresh fruits and vegetables delivered to its agencies. We are very grateful to all four Nino Salvaggio locations for providing us with wonderful fruits and vegetables that are vital to the nutrition of the seniors and small children our agencies serve, said Susan Goodell. Thank you to the Salvaggio family and staff for their generosity and willingness to help our community s most vulnerable citizens. What s the difference between this and this? The landfill gets more than enough food every day. Over 96 billion pounds of food go to waste in the United States every year while people in our own community go hungry. Forgotten Harvest fights both hunger and waste by rescuing perfectly edible food headed for landfills and getting it to those who truly need it. We currently rescue over 8 million pounds of food every year. Each dollar raised provides six meals. But we can t do it without your help. Please give generously so Forgotten Harvest can continue to fill the plates of hungry people... not garbage dumps. The markets atmosphere has an oldworld charm with its produce, fresh fruits, and gourmet delights uniquely displayed. Since the market s standard of freshness and eye appeal are very high, Forgotten Harvest is the beneficiary of food that is not only gorgeous to look at but great to The Associated Food and Petroleum Dealers (AFPD) has partnered with Forgotten Harvest to issue the One Million Pound Challenge to help feed hungry people in Southeast Michigan. Running through August 1, 2007, all Michigan food retailers and wholesalers are charged with the challenge of joining together to donate a total of one million pounds of their surplus perishable or non-perishable food products to Forgotten Harvest. Food donors are reminded of all the benefits to the program such as: Savings on disposal/dumpster fees Tax deductions No cost to donate No special staffing or resources required No risk of liability (Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996). For their exemplary commitment to relieving hunger by sharing food, Forgotten Harvest awarded Nino Salvaggio International Marketplace with the 2006 Harvey Award (named after our mascot, Harvey the Harvester) at Comedy Night 2006 on June 8th. One million pound challenge issued by AFPD to its members Project will increase food donations and new donors Our AFPD members have a history of giving back to our community, stated Jane Shallal, AFPD president. Forgotten Harvest bridges the gap between waste and hunger. I know our members are going to answer the call of this challenge. We are grateful to AFPD and its members for extending this challenge which will provide countless meals to those in need.
