Regulated / Controlled (delete as applicable) (implementation date deferred) Yes/No (delete as applicable) Section 2 - ORGANISATIONAL CHART: Service Delivery Unit Lead Ward Manager/ Team Leader Peer Support Staff Section 3 - JOB SUMMARY The role of Peer Support Worker has been developed specifically for people who have lived experience of having received Secondary Care Mental Health services. Through sharing wisdom from their own experiences, Peer Support Workers will inspire hope and belief that recovery is possible in others. The role will provide formalised peer support and practical assistance to service users in order for them to regain control over their lives and their own unique recovery process. Within a relationship of mutuality and information sharing, they will promote choice, selfdetermination and opportunities for the fulfilment of personally valued roles and connection to local communities. 2 The PSW will act as a recovery champion and an ambassador of recovery for the Trust with external agencies and partner organisations. There is also an expectation that PSWs will be involved in the on-going development of peer roles in the Trust including the Peer Support Training Programme and evaluation. Section 4 - KEY RESULT AREAS To establish supportive and respectful relationships with people using mental health services. To provide peer support whilst maintaining professional boundaries To help people identify their own Recovery goals To support service users to identify and overcome fears within a relationship of empathy and trust To liaise with carers, other health professionals, statutory and voluntary agencies to enable the Recovery needs of the service user group to be met To follow the principles and values of the Big Recovery. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Undertake appropriate administrative duties to assist the team in delivering effective and timely care, e.g. data inputting, filing, computer work, faxing, photo-copying, updating patient records. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES 1. To work in collaboration with other key stakeholders and colleagues involved in the delivery of care. 2. Work within the Trust s clinical supervision guidelines. 3. At all times act within the limits of their competences and authority, and seek advice and guidance when required. 4. Ensure actions contribute to a positive and safe working culture. 5. Ensure that patient health records are maintained in accordance with national and local Trust Policies and within the scope of the Peer Support Worker s responsibility. COMMUNICATION AND LIAISON 1. To share ideas about ways of achieving Recovery goals, drawing on personal experiences and a range of coping, self-help and self-management techniques. 2. To promote education, training, employment and volunteering (ETEV) as Recovery goal options for Mental Health Service Users 3. To actively participate in Team Meetings and report regularly to the Team Leader and Care Coordinators to ensure effective communication 4. To sign-post to various resources, opportunities and activities within the Trust and in communities to promote choice and informed decision making 5. To support service users to attend appointments/meetings/activities of their choice and to offer support in practical tasks, aligned to recovery goals 6. To actively participate in regular line management and clinical supervision including recovery focused group supervision and to identify personal developmental needs. 7. 3 ANALYSIS AND JUDGEMENT 1. To raise awareness of recovery language among Trust staff by modelling positive, strengths based, non-discriminatory working, and through avoiding the use of labels and non-jargon, non-medical jargon in all areas of work. 2. To model personal responsibility, self-awareness, self-belief, self-advocacy and hopefulness. 3. Act on own initiative when assisting Service Users in developing their own recovery plans and advance statements but act within limits of their competences and authorities and to seek advice and guidance when required. PLANNING AND ORGANISATION 1. To assist others to create their own Recovery plans and develop advance statements 2. To sign-post to various resources, opportunities and activities within the Trust and in communities to promote choice and informed decision making 3. To complete the Trust s Peer Support Worker Training Programme. PHYSICAL SKILLS 1. The role will require a range of activities, including carrying out extended work at a pc/work station, e.g. data inputting, also travel, and meeting attendance as required. POLICY AND SERVICE DEVELOPMENT 1. To act as a Recovery ambassador for the Trust with external agencies and partner organisations e.g. attending meetings outside of the Trust. 2. To support the team in promoting a recovery orientated environment by identifying recovery focused activities and imparting information and education as required 3. To work in collaboration with other key stakeholders e.g. those involved in the delivery of care in Housing, Employment, Education and Primary Care, including organisations outside the Trust. 4. The duties and responsibilities of the post will be undertaken in accordance with the Policies and Procedures of Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust as applicable. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT 1. To sign-post to various resources, opportunities and activities within the Trust and in communities to promote choice and informed decision making. 2. Maintain a working knowledge of current trends in mental health, recovery and peer support by accessing peer support networks e.g. reading books, journals and other information relevant to the role. 3. To contribute to the continued development of the PSW training programme and in the on-going evaluation of the PSW role. 4. Work to standards which equate to NVQ Level 3 Care Standards, undertaking further training as necessary. AfC Office Page 3 of 10
4 RESPONSIBLE FOR PHYSICAL AND FINANCIAL RESOURCES 1. To be responsible for all equipment supplied to the role e.g. mobile phones, laptops etc. RESPONSIBLE FOR HUMAN RESOURCES 1. To maintain confidentiality in line with Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust confidentiality policy. RESPONSIBLE FOR HEALTH and SAFETY 1. To work within Health and Safety Policies in accordance with Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, as applicable. 2. To participate in mandatory training as required. 3. To keep the named professional involved informed on all aspects of work, including any risk related issues. 4. Not be expected to carry out special observations. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Physical Effort This is a support role which will require a range of activities, including carrying out work at a pc /work station, meeting attendance and general walking whilst undertaking the tasks. Mental Effort This post will frequently work at a highly complex level which requires the Post Holder to both concentrate for long periods of the working day and work within a highly unpredictable environment (working closely with Adult Mental Health Service Users) Emotional Effort Dealing face-to-face with users/carers/relatives on a frequent basis and imparting differing levels of news some of which may be distressing. Working Environment / Conditions The postholder will be subject to a variety of working conditions carrying out community based activities in a variety of locations and some of these may be challenging (e.g. home visits). Direct service user contact with the potential to come across individuals whose difficulties may come across as potentially aggressive or violent. AfC Office Page 4 of 10

However, there is an expectation that as a condition of employment, the Trust requires its staff to attend training sessions that may fall outside their normal working hours. Safeguarding You are responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children/young people/vulnerable adults for whom you are responsible for or may come into contact with, in your job role and sphere of competence. Health and Safety The Trust aims to provide all staff, visitors and service users with a safe environment, in which to work or visit, without suffering any personal injury or ill health. Each member of staff is responsible for ensuring that they work in such a way as to ensure their own health and safety and that of other staff, clients, patients and members of the public. Managers Responsibilities for Health and Safety Managers should: Take reasonable care of his / her own health and safety and that of others, who may be affected by his / her acts or omissions ; Co-operate with the Trust on Health, Safety and Security matters so that it can comply with its legal duties. 6 Not interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety, security or welfare. Ensure that effective arrangements are in place to enable a safe and secure working environment and safe systems of work for all staff, students and others working under his / her control. Ensure that all staff, students and others working under his / her control comply with statutory requirements, Trust Health, Safety and Security related policies, procedures, and codes of practice and with the arrangements in place to control health, safety and security risks. Failure to carry out these requirements may result in disciplinary action. Control of Infection The Trust is firmly committed to reducing Healthcare Associated Infection. All staff must work to the Trust s Hand Hygiene Guidance, Infection Prevention and Control Policies, Procedures and Guidance relevant to their area of work and undertake the necessary training. For staff in clinical areas this will be appraised through the KSF review process and /or other relevant professional review processes. Information Quality All staff must ensure complete and accurate data is collected and recorded in a timely manner. The Trust recognises its duty to each and every individual employee and will respect their human rights ; the Trust also expects that its employees will treat other staff, patients and members of the public with dignity and respect. Confidentiality Staff must at all times maintain confidentiality on information gained in the course of their duties. This may well include access to personal information relating to service users and Trust staff. Information Governance All staff have a personal responsibility to ensure that person identifiable, confidential or sensitive information is processed in line with the Data Protection Act, the NHS Records Management Code and the NHS Code of Confidentiality. All staff should be aware of the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the Trust s procedures for dealing with requests for information in a timely manner. AfC Office Page 6 of 10
7 Access to Health Records All staff who contribute to patients health records are expected to be familiar with, and adhere to the Trust s Records Management policy. Staff should be aware that patients records throughout the Trust will be subject to regular audit. In addition, all health professionals are advised to compile records on the assumption that they will be accessible to patients in line with the Data Protection Act All staff who access patients records have a responsibility to ensure that these are maintained and that confidentiality is protected in line with Trust Policy. Smoke Free Policy All buildings and grounds are smoke free. There is no provision of smoking rooms inside buildings. Experience of being in a supportive and enabling role Desirable Experience of the health and social care service either paid or as a volunteer Experience of training, teaching, coaching/mentoring others Experience of working across different organisational boundaries Experience of working in a team or a group environment Experience of using a range of self-management or recovery tools and techniques Knowledge Understanding and practical knowledge of recovery Understanding of the issues and concerns of mental health service users Knowledge and commitment to service users rights Understanding of the impact of stigma and discrimination Appreciation of the community resources within the geographical location of the post and key partners Understanding of the service delivery goals of the care pathway Qualifications Good level of secondary education to GCSE level i.e. A-C in Math s and English or equivalent.
