1 Schemes of Work Year 7 Uses of music (2 weeks) To offer an initial taster session and identify skills of students To promote a singing culture To illustrate ways in which music serves everyday life Write up conclusions (Rich marking) Exercise books, CD, Percussion Instruments Instrumental Work (3 weeks) To recognize rhythms and selected notes on the stave To interpret written notes into sound To observe, follow musical instructions Note Names (Treble Clef) Exercise books, Xylophones, Glockenspiels, Keyboards Composition (2 weeks) To construct a 4 bar composition to a given rhythm To develop ideas further and extend the music using different notes/key To observe, follow musical instructions Exercise books, Xylophones, Glockenspiels, Keyboards Listening (4 weeks) To describe musical means by which a text is brought to life To participate in performance of supernatural music observing instruction and discussion

3 Pulse, Ostinato and Rhythm (3 weeks) To understand what a pulse is and its importance To reinforce this concept through musical games and singing To listen to pieces by serious composers and identify features of pulse and ostinato To compose involving ostinato within a small ensemble Review of key terms and identification of orchestral instruments Recordings, booklets, traffic light, tuned/untuned percussion, internet for instruments and exercise books, keyboards, instruments (assorted). Rhythmic Notation (2/3 weeks) To learn note values and apply knowledge to performance To reinforce key terms To develop ensemble playing skills Notation w/sheet Booklets, demonstration instrument, Student s instruments, tuned percussion. Film and Television Music (4/5 weeks) To identify musical elements by serious composers To use these features for a piece for television in a small ensemble To evaluate the final performance To use graphic scores in listening work To listen to music from another culture To record the composition on audio and as a graphic score To complete w/sheets from the booklet CDs, booklets and w/sheets, tuned/untuned percussion.

4 Schemes of Work Year 8 Notation/Ensemble Music (7 weeks) To recall notation above /below the stave To promote ensemble playing with a focus on interaction and maintaining the pulse Note spelling (Rich marking) Exercise books, CD, Percussion Instruments, Keyboards Music of Spain (6 weeks) To recognize qualities of Spanish music and culture (including personalities) To identify the language of opera To appreciate the music of Carmen Research Carmen and comment on musical features (Rich marking) Exercise books, tuned/untuned percussion, internet, DVD, Keyboards To describe key features of the period To identify/recognize instruments To perform stylistic music of the period To analyse features of a madrigal Research composers and literary terms Music of the Renaissance (8 weeks) Exercise books, Tuned/untuned percussion, keyboards, CD, DVD.

5 Programme Music (12 weeks) To describe musical means by which a text is brought to life To appreciate the musical means by which music is inspired by text and mood To recognize features and timbre of a bassoon To invent a short piece where students describe an emotion/feeling/object etc Illustrate the visual impact of the text/music Reinforce the learning of set works by completing w/sheet Exercise books, CD, Worksheets, internet Singing (4 weeks) To sing as a group and identify musical features by which a composer brings to life a given text To be able to discuss likes and dislikes using appropriate musical vocabulary Interact and assess/appraise a performance Variations (3 weeks) To identify differences between musical styles To develop these findings in a set of variations Review listening/practical work using musical vocabulary Evaluation of final performance Recordings, booklet, keyboards, instruments (assorted) Garage Band (3 weeks) Learning Objective: To experience ICT (Apple Mac) for composition To compose a short commercial-sounding track using loops, vocals and MIDI CD of final composition, evaluation w/sheets

6 Indian Music (4 weeks) To listen/analyse music from another culture To reinforce this concept through bhangra identifying both Western and Indian influences To compose a short raga To complete written work related to compositional technique Review of listening/practical work using appropriate musical vocabulary Evaluation of final performance Recordings, bhangra cards, booklets, tuned/untuned percussion, drums, keyboards, instruments (assorted). Ternary Composition (2 weeks) To understand the importance of structural devices To compose and evaluate a ternary piece in a small ensemble Evaluate composition Books, demonstration instrument, Student s instruments, tuned percussion.

To promote ensemble playing with a focus on interaction and maintaining the pulse Note spelling (Rich marking) Exercise books, CD, w/sheets Composition/Arranging (4 weeks) To interpret a tune in different guises. To compare different versions of the same tune (Lloyd-Webber Variations). Evaluate the means by which tunes can be varied. Exercise books, tuned/untuned percussion, keyboards, student s instruments, CD, w/sheets Commemorative Music (2 weeks) To describe musical means by which a composer expresses horror/anguish as a tribute to the victims of the Holocaust. To develop literacy with regards atonal composition To invent a 12 tone composition to a given rhythm Research composers and literary terms Exercise books, Tuned/untuned percussion, keyboards, CD, DVD.
