2 CHERRY TREE PRIMARY SCHOOL Vision MUSIC POLICY At Cherry Tree Primary School we envision Music to be a subject which helps to develop creativity, imagination, good listening skills, constructive crisitsim and the ability to express personal thoughts and feelings. It will help develop pupils ability to take part in practical activities, both individually and in groups that encourages and cultivates an enjoyment of different genres of music. The curriculum provides a breadth and balance is relevant and engaging and is differentiated to match all needs and abilities. Aims and Objectives Music is a unique way of communicating that can inspire and motivate pupils. It is a vehicle for personal expression, and it can play an important part in the personal development of people. Music reflects the culture and society in which we live and so the teaching and learning of music enables pupils to better understand the world they live in. Besides being a creative and enjoyable activity, music can also be highly academic and demanding subject. It also plays an important role in helping pupils feel part of the community. We provide opportunities for all children to create, play, perform and enjoy music, to develop the skills, to appreciate a wide variety of musical forms and to begin to make judgements about the quality of music. Key objectives: Develop aesthetic sensitivity and creative ability in all pupils Foster pupils sensitivity to and their understanding and enjoyment of music through an active involvement in listening, composing and performing Provide for the expression and development of individual skills and for sharing experience and cooperating with others; singing, playing, composing and listening can give individual and collective satisfaction. Develop an awareness of musical traditions and developments in a variety of cultures and societies. The capacity to express ideas, thoughts, and feelings through music Provide the opportunity to experience a feeling of fulfilment which derives from striving for the highest possible artistic and technical standard. Curriculum Planning of Music We use the National Curriculum as the basis of our planning in Music. We ensure that there are opportunities for pupils of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each aspect of Music. Through Creative Links which is our skills based curriculum children are taught the skills needed in Music. We carry out the planning for Music using Long Term Planning (LTP) and individual lesson plans (Short term) The Long Term Planning (LTP) has mapped out all of the skills which are required to be taught in Music from the National Curriculum. These skills are progressive through Key
3 Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2) so that children are increasingly challenged as they move through the school. From the LTP teachers then plan individual lessons for Music. These lesson plans list the specific learning objectives and expected outcomes for each lesson. The class teacher keeps these individual plans, although he/she and the subject co-ordinator may discuss these on an informal basis. The subject co-ordinator reviews these plans on a regular basis. Pupils are then set tasks in which they have to apply the skills which they have learnt through the skills lessons taught. This is where the pupils work in groups and independently. This planning incorporates musical skills which pupils need to develop, where they are able to use the skills and knowledge they have been taught which allows pupils to present what they have found. Teaching Methods The individual teacher should determine how the skills as to be taught in the individual classroom. Teaching styles and classes vary and what may be appropriate in one situation may not necessarily work in another. The range of teaching methods to the different abilities of pupils will include: The range of activities undertaken in the music lesson demands a repertoire of appropriate teaching and learning strategies. Whole class, group, pairs and individual work The predominance of active music-making Knowledge/instructions given by the teacher Questions and answers Creative activities Self-evaluation Active participation Expectations By the end of Key Stage 1 most children will be expected to: Use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. Play tuned and untuned instruments musically. Listen with concentration and understand a range of high quality live and recorded music. Experiment with create, select and combine sounds using inter-related dimensions of music. By the end of Key Stage 2 most children will be expected to: Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing fluency, control and expression.
4 Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using inter-related dimensions of music. Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory. Use and understand staff and musical notations. Appreciate and understand a wide range of high quality live and recorded music from different traditions and from great composers and musicians. Develop an understanding of the history of music. Assessment We assess the pupils based on their understanding and application of the skill being taught. Teachers make informal judgements as they observe the pupils through lessons. Once the pupils have completed their Musical enquiry and applied the skills in which they were taught the teachers make a judgement against the objective; using a RAG scale. Red- below expectations, Amber- expected level, Green- exceeds expectations. The results are recorded in on an excel spreadsheet which is then kept in the teachers assessment file. The subject co-ordinator also keeps a copy of the assessments. Samples of the pupils work is also collected and kept in the subject co-ordinators file. Musical enquiry work that children complete as part of their tasks should be kept in a file by the individual class teacher. So this information can be passed up to the next teacher. Additional Music Teaching Children are offered the opportunity to study a musical instrument with peripatetic teachers. Peripatetic music teaching is provided by Essex Music Service. Parent who would like their children to participate in the scheme must purchase or hire instruments and pay the additional music lesson fees on a termly basis. These lessons are normally taught on a one to one basis. They have the choice to learn a variety of musical instruments such guitar, piano, keyboard. This is in addition to the normal music teaching of the school but usually takes place during the curriculum time. ICT Links ICT is a resource which is planned for and used in Music for: Written work Illustrations Handling information Directional work Research Music provides may opportunities to use ICT including videos, visualisers, CDs, Internet, digital cameras and DVDs. Through using these opportunities pupils will develop and apply their ICT capabilities in the study of Music. Special Educational Needs
5 Pupils with special needs will have the same Musical entitlement as any other pupils. Teachers need to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of all the pupils. Differentiation is the process of planning and teaching in ways which give all children the opportunity to show what they know, understand and can do. There are a number of strategies for differentiation; By outcome or results Carefully scaffolding sequence of activities Recording Questioning Level of support given Equal Opportunities All children will be given access to Music irrespective of race, gender, creed and level of ability or nationality. Mutual respect and tolerance for all cultures will be promoted through the study of Music. Resources Resources will be kept in a central area so access will be available for all year groups. Performing Arts Club/Singing Assembly. We are also providing the opportunity to attend a Performing Arts Club which will be taught by subject specific teachers incorporating singing, dance and drama. This will provide pupils with the opportunity to be involved in performances. The school is also involved in the Colchester Music festival. Singing Assembly take places every week for all pupils. Children learn a range of different songs exposing them to a variety of music. Children are encouraged to learn the songs on a weekly basis and to actively be involved in the singing. Children are also exposed to music in other assemblies as well. Subject Co-ordinators Role The subject co-ordinator will: Take lead in policy deployment Take the lead in implementing the New National Curriculum to ensure progression and continuity across the school Support colleagues in the development of detailed plans and the implementation of the new Creative Links curriculum. Support colleagues in assessment and record keeping activities Monitor progress of Music and advise Headteacher on action needed Take responsibility for the purchase and organisation of central resources for Music
