1 Date: May 9, /03 05/09/06 To: Re: Firestone Licensed Contractors Firestone Distributors Firestone Sales Representatives FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-29 revisions In a response to concerns caused by sustained high winds during hurricane activity in 2004 and 2005, FM Global recently updated the Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-29, Roof Deck Securement and Above Deck Roof Components. This document is available from FM Global at their website, or through subscription to RoofNav and should be complied with for all assemblies that are required to meet these specifications. The updates particularly impact the perimeters and corners on adhered (asphalt and single-ply) assemblies over steel or concrete decks where the insulation is mechanically attached. Perimeter and Corner Zones are 10% of the lesser plan dimension or 40% of the building height, whichever is less, but never less than 3 feet. A brief review of the updates include, but are not limited to, the following recommendations: 1. To meet FM 1-60 and 1-75 requirements for adhered assemblies on steel decks or concrete decks where the insulation is mechanically attached: Increase field attachment density for insulation in the: Perimeters: 50% but not less than 1 per 2 sq. ft. Corners: 100% but not less than 1 per 1 sq. ft. Examples: The number of fasteners and plates per insulation board: field 10, perimeters 16, corners 32 field 12, perimeters 18, corners 32 field 18, perimeters 27, corners To meet FM 1-90 or greater requirements for adhered assemblies on steel or concrete decks where the insulation is mechanically attached: Perimeters: roofing assembly must be tested and meet the pressure requirements per Table 1 of LPDS Corners: roofing assembly must be tested and meet the pressure requirements per Table 1 of LPDS Examples: The design uplift pressures (in psf) that must be met for the given project: field 90, perimeters 150, corners 225 field 120, perimeters 195, corners 295 BUILDING PRODUCTS COMPANY 310 East 96th Street Indianapolis, Indiana Telephone: Facsimile:

2 May 9, 2006 Page 2 of 3 3. In lieu of adhered perimeters and corners to meet the above pressures, a mechanically attached assembly meeting the required field pressure can have its perimeter and corner detailing placed in the perimeters and corner areas of the adhered assembly. 4. Mechanically attached single-ply assemblies can still use FM s prescriptive enhancements for perimeters and corners: Perimeter row spacing 60% of the field spacing. Corner row spacing 40% of the field spacing. 5. Mechanically attached base sheets for asphalt systems may also use FM s prescriptive enhancements for perimeters and corners: Perimeter attachment is increased by 70% over the field. Corner attachment is increased by 160% over the field. 6. Install batten bars or fastener rows perpendicular to the steel deck ribs in all areas of the roof. Exception: for 1-75 and below batten bars or fastener rows may run parallel to the ribs of the deck within the defined perimeter of the deck if, a) the distance between rows in this area is 3 ft. and b) two FM Approved deck fasteners or two minimum 5/8" dia. welds are installed at the bottom of each flute of the deck in the perimeter/corner areas. Options to cover the batten/fastener rows: Seaming many partial single-ply membrane sheets in these areas. Batten bars or rows of fasteners with cover-strips over the membrane. An additional layer of like-membrane may be adhered over the entire area. 7. In addition to these changes FM will now require increased steel deck attachment for many roofing assemblies whether they are fully adhered or mechanically attached. See LPDS 1-29 for details on securing roof decks. 8. Use an FM Approved coating in lieu of pea gravel in hurricane prone areas. 9. Use multi-ply assemblies or single ply membranes that are 80 to 90 mils thick in hurricane prone areas. Firestone Building Products has a variety of EPDM, TPO and Asphalt roofing systems that meet the new requirements. For more information on how to address the changes to FM LPDS 1-29 that may impact your business, please see the attached Frequently Asked Questions sheet or contact Firestone Roofing Solutions at (800) or by , RoofSolutions@firestonebp.com. Best regards, John Geary Director of Marketing Don Russell Roofing Solutions Manager

3 May 9, 2006 Page 3 of 3 Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the FM Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-29 Revisions What adhered Firestone Roofing Systems meet the new criteria for FM 1-90 roofing assemblies? Firestone offers fully adhered EPDM, TPO and SBS roofing systems that have been tested and meet the requirements for FM 1-90 and the revisions to LPDS See the attached supplemental drawings for the perimeter and corner mechanical attachment requirements. Do all roofs need to meet FM 1-90 requirements? No. FM 1-90 requirements are typically intended for use in hurricane-prone or coastal areas. In fact, over 85% of the United States and Canada are in areas where FM 1-60 or FM 1-75 requirements apply. Design pressures take into account wind speeds, building heights, ground roughness and importance factors to determine the appropriate requirements for roofing system securement. FM Global has provided a great service by setting testing parameters to minimize losses due to damage from high winds and fire. Prior to the revisions to LPDS 1-29, there was a relatively small difference in the cost to install an FM 1-90 instead of FM 1-60 system. As that difference has become greater, in situations where the design pressures do not require a higher rating, complying with FM 1-60 or 1-75 may be a better value to the owner. Can system types be mixed? Yes. If installing a fully adhered system in the field of the roof, it is acceptable to switch to a mechanically attached system at the perimeters. In addition, it would be acceptable to adhere the membrane and mechanically attach it per the prescriptive attachment spacing. How can I know what the design pressure is for a particular building? Charts and wind maps are available through FM and other industry organizations or you may contact Firestone Roofing System Solutions at (800) or by at RoofSolutions@firestonebp.com. FM LPDS 1-29 focuses on securing adhered roofing systems at the perimeters and corners, what about the edge metal securement? It does not make any sense to have a roofing system designed to withstand high winds, yet the perimeter metal is attached with nails or inadequate fasteners. The industry can expect FM Global to address this issue in the future. Firestone Building Products offers AnchorGard Roof Edge Systems that meet the ANSI/SPRI ES-1 standard that has been adopted by the International Building Code. It is prefabricated for your convenience; fast and easy to install; and included in the Firestone Red Shield and Platinum warranties. What other considerations should be taken into account? In hurricane-prone areas, FM Global recommends for single-ply systems that 80 or 90 mil membranes be installed. Firestone Building Products has several high quality options for you to choose from and get a 30 year Platinum warranty: 90 mil RubberGard EPDM Platinum Roofing Systems (with mechanically attached perimeters and corners). 80 mil UltraPly TPO Platinum Roofing Systems with WideWeld seams. 80 mil ReflexEON TPO Platinum Roofing Systems with WideWeld seams. The Firestone Platinum PHW warranty covers winds up to 100 mph, hail up to 2" and incidental punctures for 30 years. Att: FM Layouts
