5 Chapter 1: Installation and Activation Chapter 1 Installation and Activation ATX 2013 can be installed on an individual, stand-alone computer or it can be installed on a network with a designated server and multiple workstations. If all your computers meet the System Requirements (recommended requirements give best performance), you're ready to install ATX. If not, refer to Upgrading Your System. IMPORTANT: Your ATX software will only install to the computer's primary hard drive. While the ATX application location cannot be altered, you will be able to choose where the ATX work product data files you create are stored (i.e, a secondary drive, network drive, external drive, etc.). See Changing Your File Storage Location for instructions. Locate Activation Code(s) Activation codes are printed on the Fulfillment Confirmation Slip found in the shipment you received in the mail. If you use a payroll product, it has a separate installation and activation code. See For Payroll Forms, a Separate Install is Required. Downloading Products Download ATX 2013 from See Downloading ATX. Follow ATX Installation and Activation Instructions As you're installing ATX, the Select Your Install Type dialog box helps you make the right selection for the computer on which you're installing the system. 6 Chapter 1: System Requirements Troubleshooting Network Installation ATX is designed to identify a network server on which the product has already been installed. If this does not occur automatically, the following topics can help you manually identify the server: Finding Your Network Server Adding a Server Network Troubleshooting Tips For Payroll Forms, a Separate Install is Required If payroll products come with your product bundle, the installation and forms are free. If your package does not include a payroll product, you can download the payroll product free and obtain payroll forms on a pay-per-return basis. For payroll installation instructions, see Installing W or Payroll Compliance. Do not install the payroll product to the same folder as ATX ATX User Guide for Tax Year 2013 Installed with Product A PDF version of the guide is downloaded to your desktop as part of the installation process. Printed copies of the guide can be ordered on the ATX website by entering into your web browser. System Requirements Systems that do not meet requirements often have issues with general system performance (speed) as well as speed transmitting or downloading data a problem most tax businesses cannot afford during tax season. That s why we have System Requirements charts for stand-alone/single workstations and for network servers. ATX has both minimum and recommended system requirements recommended being the setup for optimum ATX performance. The closer you are to meeting the recommended system requirements, the better the system performance you can expect from ATX. For more information, see ATX 2013 System Requirements: Frequently-Asked Questions. Your system includes everything listed on the system requirements chart, including computers, monitors, Internet connection and browser, external drives, and printers. Account and File Backup System These items are not required to run the ATX product, but they are important tools for ATX customers: account that supports file attachments (used to transmit files to ATX Technical Support, if necessary) File backup system (such as removable hard drive, CD-R, DVD-R, or similar device) Analyze Your System's Capabilities To measure your current system against our requirements, we've developed a System Analysis Tool. This knowledgebase article contains instructions and the download for the tool. 6

9 Upgrading Your System Chapter 1: Upgrading Your System If your current system does not meet the minimum requirements for your desired setup, you need to upgrade your system. This may involve: getting more memory, buying a new computer, or calling your Internet provider to find ways to improve your Internet speed. How much you invest is your decision. However, the closer you get to the Recommended system requirements, the faster and more efficiently ATX will perform for you. If you re unsure how to upgrade your system, contact a qualified computer technician in your area. Discontinuation of Microsoft Windows XP support: Although a Windows XP operating system is the minimum acceptable requirement for ATX 2013 on a single computer (not acting as a network server), we will only support it through the 2013 tax season. Our support of Windows XP will cease in October 2014 (after the 2013 tax season), due to Microsoft discontinuing Windows XP support in April Read The Risk of Running Windows XP After Support Ends April Downloading ATX To install ATX products from the Web site: 1. During installation, the Select Your Install Type dialog box helps you make the right selection for the computer on which you're installing the system: Standalone Select this install type if you'll be preparing taxes on this workstation (computer) and you do not need to share this tax data with any other workstations in your organization. This is the correct configuration for most single-computer, single-user offices. See Stand-Alone Computer - Installation and Activation. Network Select this install type if you are not the only person in your office, or you intend to bring additional people on during the season, and want to share data across a network. If you select Network, you'll have three installation choices for the current computer. 11

12 Chapter 1: What Install Type Do I Need? Server Only Select this install type if the current computer will only be used as a server that is, to store data and transfer data to other computers on the network. Choose this setup if the current computer will not be used to prepare tax returns. See Network Server Installation. Workstation Only Select this install type if you'll be preparing taxes on this workstation (computer) but you'll need to share this tax data with other workstations and a server. See Network Workstations - Installation and Activation. IMPORTANT: You no longer need to run Netsetup on workstations. If you select the Workstation Only install type, it is assumed that you've already installed ATX on a server. Server and Workstation Select this install type if this workstation (computer) will be used as a server and you'll also be using it to prepare tax returns. See Network Server and Workstation - Installation and Activation. Important Note for Fixed Asset Manager (FAM) Customers If you also purchased the Fixed Asset Manager (FAM) program, you must select the same install type for FAM as you select for ATX tax. This is critical for integration between the programs. After installing FAM to the server, install it on workstations where you will run FAM. 12

13 Chapter 1: Stand-Alone Computer - Installation and Activation Stand-Alone Computer - Installation and Activation If you only need one computer system, or, if you do not need to share system data with other system users, a stand-alone or single workstation setup is probably fine for you. This topic gives steps to perform the Stand-Alone installation. If you're unsure of your install type, see What Install Type Do I Need? IMPORTANT! Before installing the product, make sure your computer meets the System Requirements for a stand-alone setup. See Upgrading Your System, if necessary. 21 Chapter 1: Network Server Installation Network Server Installation If you want to share system data between users, and would like data stored in one central location, you should establish a network setup in your organization. A network setup involves: A designated server. One or more additional workstations. This topic only includes steps to install the server on a computer. However, a server-only install does not provide access to the ATX application as a typical tax preparer uses it, which requires a workstation installation. To install both a workstation and a server on the same machine, see Network Server and Workstation - Installation and Activation. If you're unsure of your installation type, see What Install Type Do I Need? IMPORTANT! Before installing the product, make sure your network server meets the System Requirements for a server, and that your network workstations meet requirements for standalone/single workstations. See Upgrading Your System, if necessary. Setups that meet or exceed the recommended requirements will experience the best performance results. Installing ATX on the Network Server As a precaution against losing work in other programs, you should shut down all other applications on your computer before beginning your ATX installation. An automatic system restart occurs if your system requires.net Framework software as part of the ATX install process. See.NET Software for more information. To install and activate ATX on the network server: IMPORTANT! After installing the ATX server, there will be no ATX 2013 icon on your desktop. This is because you are intending for this computer to be used ONLY as a server, and you do not intend to use the ATX application on this machine. If you also want to use this computer to open and use ATX, then you should follow installation directions in Network Server and Workstation - Installation and Activation. 1. Do one of the following: Install from DVD: Insert the DVD provided in your product shipment into the DVD-ROM drive. (Click here if the program doesn't start automatically.) 26 Chapter 1: Using ATX on a Network Using ATX on a Network Working in a networked environment is an efficient way to share data among multiple users while ensuring the security of the data in your network. Although there are a few restrictions, there are also some ways that you can customize your workstation without affecting other network users. Customize Your Networked Workstation without Affecting Others The following settings are stored on a per user basis, so you can make changes without affecting the work of other users: Marking returns in any main manager. A user can mark some returns; then, if he/she logs into a different workstation, he/she will see the same returns marked. Column sizing and re-positioning: You can change the size or position of any main or setup manager without affecting how it looks for other users. See the Customizing Managers topic in Program Help. Network Users Must Login All network users must have their own, unique user name in the system. This means several things: Each network can only have one Admin user. All network users must be set up in Security Manager (the Admin user is set up by default). All network users will now login every time they open the application. Restrictions You are restricted from doing the following if you're a networked ATX user: Users cannot login on more than one workstation at a time. Users who share a User Name will not be allowed to login to the application at the same time. Returns can only be open by one network user at a time. A Locked Return message tells you the name of the user and the workstation ID where the return is open. This prevents overwriting of information. Only one user at a time can transmit e-files or process acknowledgements (ACKS) through the EFC. A dialog box appears telling you that the name of the user who is already processing. Returns cannot be deleted if they're open by another user. Extensions. You cannot create or print an extension for an open return. Close the return and try again. 26

27 Chapter 1: Network Workstations - Installation and Activation Network Workstations - Installation and Activation NOTE FOR EXISTING ATX CUSTOMERS: You no longer need to run Netsetup on workstations. Instead, use these instructions to install your workstations. Before installing the product on network workstations, you must do the following: Install and launch the product on the server. See Network Server Installation. Accept any updates available on the server. See Downloading ATX. Set up all other network users in the Security Manager. (Admin users are set up by default). Network users must login to access the product. See Adding Users to the System in ATX Program Help. This topic gives steps to perform the Network - Workstation Only installation. If you're unsure of your install type, see What Install Type Do I Need? 38 Chapter 1: Network Troubleshooting Tips Network Troubleshooting Tips If you received a Network Server Not Complete message, follow the tips in this topic: Unable to locate the ATX Tax Server If the system can't automatically locate the server, check the following: 1. Have you installed ATX on the server yet? If the answer is no. you must install on the server first before installing on network workstations. See Network Server Installation for complete instructions. If the answer is yes, go to Tip Did the server install successfully? If the answer is no, reinstall the server. (Check the server's Program Data and Program Files folders to ensure that no ATX 2013 folders were placed there. Delete any that might have been only partially installed, then follow instructions in Network Server Installation to reinstall the product on the server.) If the answer is yes, refer to instructions in Adding a Server. From the Add ATX Tax Server dialog box, you can search for the server by computer name. If the server is found, your network setup will continue. 3. If the server still cannot be found, stop and restart the server. See Starting or Stopping the ATX Server. Then, follow instructions for Adding a Server. If the server is found, setup will continue. If the server is still not found after the reboot, go to Tip Verify that the server and the workstation you are currently configuring are on the same network. 46 Chapter 1: Changing Your File Storage Location Changing Your File Storage Location ATX stores your tax preparation files in an area on your ATX server separate from the product installation, which is loaded to each computer's hard drive. While you cannot change the installation location, you can change where your data is stored for the network or for a stand-alone system, if desired. Storage locations can be changed on the network server, server/workstation, or stand-alone machines. The network storage location cannot be modified from a network workstation. For example, if you have an extremely large number of returns, companies, payers, or billing rates, you may want to locate the storage on a larger or faster computer. The file storage location is where your actual returns and associated data will be stored and accessed by the workstations. This is not where backups of your returns are stored. Backups are stored separately under a Backup folder on your ATX server. The Admin user typically performs this task, if required. To change your file storage location: 1. From the Support menu in any main manager, select About ATX. The About ATX dialog box appears: 2. Click the Admin Console link at the bottom of the dialog box. 46

47 The Server Settings tab of the Admin Console dialog box appears: Chapter 1: Changing Your File Storage Location The Server Settings tab provides the location of your physical address of the computer that is your ATX server, and displays the server status and port numbers. 3. Click the File Settings tab. The File Settings tab appears: 4. Click the Browse button next to the File Server Storage Location field; select a new location. 5. To save, click Close. 6. Restart ATX. 47

48 Chapter 1: Starting or Stopping the ATX Server Starting or Stopping the ATX Server This topic explains how to start or stop the ATX server, which you may be asked to do by an ATX Technical Support Representative if you experience server-related issues. Typically, you would only need to do this if directed by an ATX Technical Support representative to solve an issue with the server. 1. From the Support menu in any main manager, select About ATX. The About ATX dialog box appears: 2. Click the Admin Console link at the bottom of the dialog box. The Server Settings tab of the Admin Console dialog box appears: 48

49 Chapter 1: Starting or Stopping the ATX Server The Server Settings tab provides the location of your physical address of the computer that is your ATX server, and displays the server status and port numbers. 3. Under the Status column, right-click in the row for the server you want to start/stop. 4. Select the following: Click Start to restart the server. Click Stop to stop the server. 5. Click Close. 6. 50 Chapter 1: Activating Other Products from Within ATX Activating Other Products from Within ATX If you upgrade your ATX package, you'll need to enter your new Activation Code before the system will recognize your upgraded status and allow access to any new features you may have acquired. To activate your upgraded ATX product: 1. From the Return Manager, click the Support menu; then, select Activate Products. The Activation Codes dialog box appears: 2. Enter activation codes for any additional products you want to activate. If the activation code is successfully entered, the name of the product appears in the Products pane. 3. 51 Chapter 1: Uninstalling ATX Uninstalling ATX To uninstall ATX, you must uninstall both the ATX program as well as the ATX server from the Programs and Features folder in your system's Control Panel. It's important to note that your data is not removed from the system during this process; it remains intact and will be visible if you re-install ATX. If you need to perform a complete uninstall (which would include uninstalling or removing the database from your system), you should contact ATX Technical Support for assistance. Part 1: Uninstalling the ATX 2013 Program To uninstall ATX: 1. Click the Windows icon (or Start menu in Windows XP) and select Control Panel. 2. Select Programs and Features. For ATX, you'll see ATX 2013 and ATX Server Right-click ATX 2013 in the program list. 4. Click Uninstall. The Programs and Features dialog box appears: 5. Click Yes. Select an installation type: Standard Installation - click the Details for Standard button to see what's included. Select this for Stand-Alone installations. Custom Installation - click the Details for Custom to see what's included. Select this for Network installations. If you select Custom installation, be sure to install all files to the hard drive of your server when prompted. For Custom installations, do not install the W-2 or Payroll product to the same folder as ATX The Product Setup dialog box shows the progress of the installation. 55

56 Chapter 1: Installing W or Payroll Compliance When the product has finished installing, the Installation Complete dialog appears: To open the application, click Start. The Payroll Compliance banner appears, followed by the Automatic Update dialog box: 10. To receive the latest version of the forms as well as the program, click Update Now. The product opens. 56

57 Running W-2/1099 or Payroll Compliance on a Network To run either W-2/1099 or Payroll Compliance on a network, you'll need to: Chapter 1: Installing W or Payroll Compliance Share the product installation folder to all workstations before running NetSetup on all the workstations.
