UNDERFLOOR HEATING PRESENTATION THURSDAY OCTOBER 7TH 2004 PRESENTATION OF UNDERFLOOR HEATING CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES FOR C.I.B.S.E 1
Time for the UK to Rediscover Underfloor Heating How modern systems work Why UFH is relevant to YOU Where to go for additional information 2
What are we trying to achieve? UFH is very close to the ideal temperature profile 3
HOW DO MODERN SYSTEMS WORK Radiators Transfer heat from very small & very hot surface (80 C) to room (20 C). High rate of convection. UFH Transfer heat from very slightly warmer than room (25 C to 2 0 C) Very high rate of radiation. Natural, just like the sun. Comfortable, summer all year round. 4
How do Radiators Work? High loss through windows Stratification lead to higher temp. and thus high heat loss 5
How does UFH Work? Just like one big low temperature radiator 6
1960 s UNDERFLOOR HEATING Mainly electric cable in thick concrete floors Floor used as storage heater Poor controls Floors too hot Uncomfortable Inefficient (Lack of floor insulation) Ineffective (Huge air changes in poorly insulated buildings) Ultimately unreliable 7
MODERN UNDERFLOOR HEATING HEATING Mainly warm water (~10% electric) High tech plastic pipe in or just below floor Water is O C Forms to suit every floor construction Microprocessor controls Economical to run Reliable Maintenance-free 8
Typical Solid Floor Cross Section Carpet Tile Wood 9
Familiar Technology Screed Insulation Concrete 10
TYPICAL OUTPUT GRAPH Floor versus air temp air temp W/m.sq 100W/m.sq 200W/m.sq floor temp 11
Pipe set in place before screed is laid 12
Advantages of UFH Very comfortable - No hot heads and cold feet - No floor draughts - No drying of the air - Reduced dust levels Unobtrusive - Walls completely clear - Floors and walls easier to clean 13
Other Advantages of UFH Safe - No hot surfaces - important to HSE - Ultimate low surface temperature radiator - Nothing to bump into - Nothing to vandalise Quiet - No creaks and groans ( Especially solid floors ) 14
Other Advantages of UFH Complements other aspects of heating Perfect with condensing boilers Keeps options open for alternative energy sources - Use with solar - Use with heat pumps - Use with waste heat from other power sources Cost effective installation - Less damage & less pilferage - Low maintenance & nothing to paint - Reduced post installation problems 15
Applications Houses, flats Student accommodation Nursing homes Hospitals, clinics Shops Pubs, clubs, restaurants 16
Applications Offices Leisure, sports facilities Hotels Factories, warehouses Public Buildings Any project - New build or refurbishment 17
Electric Underfloor Heating Today Modern resistance cables - More reliable Modern controls - Monitoring of floor surface - Optimum use of electricity Design for rapid or storage heating 18
Why then is UFH not widely used? In Germany, UFH > 60% In Sweden and Switzerland, UFH > 80% In UK, UFH < 10% but growing, users have a new awareness of UFH 19
Use of Plastic Pipe in some EU countries in 1996 (X millions of metres) Metal Plastic 50 0 Switzerland Belgium Italy Sweden Turkey 20
Use of Plastic Pipe in some EU countries in 1996 (% of Total) Switzerland Belgium Italy Sweden Turkey 21
Recent Survey of Senior Executives in Building Industry Q. Why don t your companies use UFH? A. Because it is expensive Q. In what way expensive? A. Expensive to run Q. Why expensive to run? A. Because it is electric Opinions on UFH, stuck in 1960s Time to change 22
Why UFH is relevant to you Home owners and other users are taking charge of specifications Changes in life style has lead to surge in UFH demand in residential sector And in offices where UFH comfort leads to a better productive workplace. Health & safety rules changes mean no hot radiators for the elderly, disabled or very young UFH Ideally suits this new culture 23
Why UFH is relevant to you Improving building insulation standards lead to reduced heat required EC regulations on energy efficiency and pollution require low temperature emitters such as UFH Keeps your option open for future energy sources based on low temperatures (heat pump, solar, renewable fuels) Time for the UK to rediscover UFH 24
Where can you find more information? 25

Observation Radiators were a great advance when the alternative was to have a open grate in every room... and now UFH is the ultimate radiator 27
Summary 21 CENTURY UFH is ST clean comfortable unobtrusive quiet safe energy-efficient maintenance-free UFH has come a long way. It s time for you to move on too! 28
GENIUS WIRELESS CONTROLLER (010112/010110/010113) Consists of: 1. Command Module 2. Control Module (The command module and control module together, are known as the base unit). 3. Thermotransmitter (sensor or room stat) with display (010113) no display (010110) 4. Genius Antenna (010109) 29
GENIUS CONNECTION DETAIL This shows how the telestats are connected to he Genius unit Programming direction Remote radio transmission to control unit 30
GENIUS WIRELESS TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER (010112/010110/010113) 1. For independent zone control 2. Can provide outputs for up to 12 x zones 3. No hard wiring between sensors and base unit, considerably reduces installation cost and time. 4. Ideal for retrofitting, as minimum disruption to building fabric 5. Very accurate temperature measurement as reads radiant as well as ambient air temperatures hour/7 day time temperature set back programming makes it very versatile 7. Features include a 90 day holiday programme and alarm monitoring. 8. Battery in sensor has 10 yr. life expectancy 9. Can be used in wet areas and situations where hard wired switched thermostats would not be permitted 10. Can be interfaced with either Area Packs or Control Sets. 31
