1 CBA 495/GBA 695 Syllabus Spring 2007 Course Name: Travel Study to China -Comparative Management Course Number: CBA495/GBA695 Instructor: Dr. Robert Chi and Dr. Tom Sy Class Hours: 9 hours before travel, and 14 days of traveling in China Course objective and format: CBA495 Spring 2007 equips students with an understanding of the social, cultural, economic, and political environments of doing business in East Asia, with a special emphasis on China. Through preparatory lectures, overseas travel, readings and projects, students will learn about the challenges and critical success factors facing businesses in the region and how these issues are similar to and different from those in the U.S. This course also provides a comprehensive foundation for understanding, managing, and successfully interacting in the multi-faceted, culturally-embedded contexts of today's multinational firms. The world as a global village is used so often that the phrase itself has become a cliché. As such, most of us especially here in the cultural melting pot of Los Angeles take for granted much of the outcomes of globalization. We navigate our lives daily through a panoply of cross-cultural choices such as which ethnic food to eat, what foreign film to watch, or what country s fashions to wear. Most of us even quite comfortably intermix foreign words in our daily vocabulary, like when we say something analogous to it s a Zen sort of thing, or he s a real macho kind of guy. But, one important locale where global navigation happens less smoothly is the transnational firm. In this setting, the culture, or the taken-for-granted rules and scripts that govern how people interact, is not so clear. And, as firms around the globe continue to internationalize, it is in this setting that more and more of us are likely to experience the more poignant effects of the global village. As such, the aim of this course is to provide students with 1) an understanding of the major issues facing multinational corporations in the management of their international operations particularly those of an intercultural nature; 2) insights into the cultural, historical and institutional factors influencing management practices around the world; and 3) the knowledge and ability to work effectively in multicultural teams. Then we will proceed to the Palace Museum - the Forbidden City, Tian An Men Square - the well-known largest square in the world, and the Summer Palace - the largest imperial garden in China. This evening you will enjoy a Chinese acrobatic show with delicious dinner. Full-day excursion outside of to the remarkable Great Wall and legendary Ming Tombs - the last resting place of 13 emperors. Tonight's special dinner gives you a real taste of the famous Peking Duck. After breakfast we shall fly to one of China s ancient capitals -. Upon arrival we visit the Wild Goose Pagoda and ancient city wall. A dumpling feast is arranged for tonight's dinner was the capital of China for 11 dynasties extending over 1000 years. We are going to visit the amazing Terra Cotta Warriors - thousands of life-size clay warriors, horses and chariots which were part of the tomb of the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty. Afterward we shall visit the Huaqing Hot Spring. In the morning we are taking a domestic flight to Shaghai. Enjoy your lunch after arrival, and then take a city tour including the Yu Garden, Nan Pu Bridge, and Oriental TV Tower. After breakfast, visit the first Chinese business street, Road, with numerous unique shop stands; visit the water's edge Dongxin scenery, and the Pudong newly developed area situated at the Whangpoo River east of the lower reaches of the Changjiang river bank.
