Introduction The Internet is often referred to as the Information Superhighway because it connects millions of people across the globe. Unlike a typical highway, the Internet moves ideas, data, and information through networks. The Web provides an easy-to-use interface to Internet resources that has become an everyday tool. Competent end users need to be aware of the resources available on the Internet and the Web and how to access them. 4
The Internet and the Web The Internet is a large global network, connecting smaller networks worldwide The Internet was launched in 1969 US funded project to develop a national computer network ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network) Originally used to facilitate communication between researchers Limited to text only 5
The Internet and the Web The World Wide Web or WWW was introduced in 1991 at CERN CERN = Center for European Nuclear Research The web allowed for multimedia interfacing to the resources. 6
Web through the generations: Web 1.0 Focused on linking existing information Web 2.0 (2001) supported more dynamic content creation and social interaction. Facebook is one of the best known Web 3.0 Focuses on computer-generated information Requires less human interaction to locate and integrate information
The internet vs. the web What is the difference? The internet is the actual network. Made up of cables, wires, satellites, etc. The web is a multimedia interface to the resources on the internet.

These blogs are widely used by consumers and others as a source for knowledgeable and reliable product information. However, some bloggers are paid by companies or ad agencies to post favorable reviews about their products or services. Do you think that these bloggers are acting unethically when they accept payment for writing a review?
Search Tools Search Engines Specialized Search Engines Content Evaluation 27
Content Evaluation To evaluate the accuracy of internet information you must consider: 1. Authority Is the author an expert? Is the site official? 2. Accuracy Has information been critically reviewed? 3. Objectivity Does the author have a bias? 4. Currency Is the information up to date?
