1 Summer Bridge Service Learning Prject 3 rd Grade Resurce Guide 21 Lessns and 5 Prjects Develped by the Office f Service Learning thrugh the directin f Jn Schmidt The Summer Bridge Service Learning Prject (SBSLP) is an pprtunity fr students t learn abut what it means t be a citizen and hw citizens take actin t imprve the wrld. Each week will feature a pint f inquiry Citizenship, Hunger, Animal Welfare, and Envirnment. Students will have the pprtunity t take an actin during each week. Students brainstrm an actin r chse ne f the actins listed in the curriculum. Over the curse f the five weeks f SBSLP students will learn abut the fllwing five issues: 1. Cmmunity and Citizens 2. Hunger 3. Animal Welfare 4. Envirnment 5. Peace Making Students will als be encuraged t wrk tgether n five prjects that are related t each area: 1. Cmmunity Map and Schl Survey 2. Fd Drive 3. Each week students will tackle a particular prblem and wrk tgether t create a prject that is abut prmting the scial gd. The fllwing table utlines the themes, fcus, and prducts that are part f SBSLP. 1

2 Prject based learning has five primary cmpnents: 1. Begin with the End in Mind what the prduct is that yur students are wrking twards? 2. Craft the Driving Questin what d we want students t learn thrugh this prcess? 3. Plan the Assessment hw will yu assess yur students? 4. Map the Prject what steps will yu take t help students cmplete the prject? 5. Manage the Prcess hw will yu facilitate the prcess f helping students learn frm and cmplete their prject? Each week s descriptin includes infrmatin n the first tw steps. An assessment is included as an appendix t this resurce. Curriculum fr the SBSLP has been drawn frm fur primary websites: Learning t Give Feeding Minds CPS Service Learning Each week includes fur lessns which lead t a service/educatinal prject that culminates the week s inquiry. Many f the lessns are frm Learning t Give, an interactive website that challenges yung peple t explre a variety f scial issues, learn abut them, and then act t address scial prblems. During the next weeks we encurage yu t explre a variety f scial issues with yur students utilizing curriculum prvided by Learning t Give at I. Week 1 Intrductin t Citizenship Prject: Presentatin abut Cmmunity Rles Begin with the End in Mind Students will understand what it means t have a rle in a healthy cmmunity. Driving Questin Hw can individuals cme tgether t build a strng cmmunity? Gather yur students each day fr lessns abut citizenship during the first week f summer schl. These lessns will prepare students fr issue specific explratin and service prject pprtunities during weeks 2 5 f summer schl. The first lessns will intrduce students t the cncept f cmmunity, what it is and means and what rles we play in cmmunities. Lessn 1 What is Cmmunity Students will explre the cncept f cmmunity in this lessn and understand what it takes t build, gvern, and maintain a cmmunity. Lessn 2 Rights and Respnsibilities Students will learn abut the varius rights and respnsibilities in a cmmunity. Hw d we practice thse rights and respnsibilities? Lessn 3 Reslving Cnflict In this lessn yur students will learn abut and practice hw individuals in a cmmunity reslve cnflict. While sme cnflict can be healthy, sme clearly isn t. As individuals in a cmmunity reslve cnflict, they becme strnger as a cmmunity. 2

3 Lessn 4 Educating Others In this lessn, students prepare and implement a skit, presentatin, r set f visuals that will educate thers in the schl building abut basic rights and respnsibilities f cmmunity members. II. Week 2 Citizens and Issues: Hunger Prject: Fd Drive Begin with the End in Mind Students will understand what it means t experience hunger and respnd effectively t the prblem f hunger. Driving Questin Hw can individuals make a difference in the prblem f hunger? During this week s fcus n hunger, students will examine what hunger lks like and what individuals and grups can d t address the prblem f hunger. Students will als wrk tward cmpletin f their prject a schl wide fd drive, which can be intrduced in Lessn 7. The schl wide fd drive will take 2 3 weeks t advertise and gather fd items. Students shuld be rganized t take n the fllwing rles: Identify a lcal fd pantry r distributin center Create psters and make annuncements abut the fd drive Encurage adults and students in the building t participate in the drive Develp a plan t gather fd items fr dnatin t the fd pantry The web based curricular resurce used in this sectin is Feeding Minds, Fighting Hunger: A Wrld Free frm Hunger In additin t the series f lessns prvided here, there are varius interactive activities that the website ffers. Lessn 5 What are Hunger and Malnutritin and Wh are the Hungry? and malnutritin/primary level/lessn 1/en/ This lessn will prvide an verview f the imprtance f fd, and the different meal patterns in different parts f the wrld. It will als cnsider thse individuals wh are at the greatest risk f suffering frm wrld hunger. Lessn 6 Why are Peple Hungry? and malnutritin/primarylevel/lessn 2/en/ In this lessn, students will examine fd systems and their influence n wrld hunger. They will explre the three pillars f fd security and why these are necessary t ensure a healthy life. 3

4 Lessn 7 What Can We d t Help End Hunger? andmalnutritin/primary level/lessn 3/en/ This lessn will illustrate the different ways in which hunger is being addressed arund the wrld by discussing different real r mythical heres wh have acted n curage t make a difference in the wrld. It will discuss specific ways that students can take actin t address the issue f hunger. At this pint in the week, teachers shuld intrduce the schl wide fd drive t the students. See abve fr the different rles and tasks t be cnsidered as this prject gets underway. Extensins t this unit: The Right t Fd: A Windw t the Wrld This is a cmputer based activity that can be accessed in 5 languages. It prvides students with the pprtunity t understand the cncept f hunger arund the wrld by using an interactive map. Teachers may wrk thrugh the activity with the entire grup, r allw students t use it independently. III. Week 3 Citizens and Issues: Animal Welfare Prject: Pster Campaign abut Animal Welfare Text: Buddy Unchained Begin with the End in Mind Students will understand hw animals are cared fr in urban cmmunities. Driving Questin What des it take t make sure that animals are cared fr successfully? Our third area f inquiry will be animal welfare. Students will learn abut the needs f animals and hw human beings care fr animals Lessn 8 Animal Shelters Students will learn abut the different types f animal shelters and hw these shelters care fr animals. Lessn 9 The Cst f Animal Care Students will learn what it takes t care fr animals effectively utilizing math skills. Lessn 10 Supprting Animal Shelters Students will read Buddy Unchained t learn mre abut hw animal shelters care fr pets. Students will then have the pprtunity t develp a plan t supprt an animal shelter in Chicag. Lessn 11 Share Our Knwledge In this lessn, students will reflect n what they have learned abut animals and animal welfare and will brainstrm ways t cmmunicate further what they have learned. Students can make psters and fliers fr distributin in schl and cmmunity that will help mre peple becme aware and invlved in animal welfare. 4

Week 4 Citizens and Issues: The Envirnment Prject: Fd Waste Recmmendatins Begin with the End in Mind Students will learn abut hw much fd is wasted that culd be diverted ut f the slid waste stream. Driving Questin Why d Americans waste s much fd and can we slw the waste? During the final week, students will explre the envirnmental prblem f fd waste. Americans waste 11 billin punds f fd each year. An estimate f fd waste frm Texas suggests that Americans thrw away 25% f ur edible fd. This week students will examine fd waste in their schl cafeteria and develp recmmendatins fr schl leadership abut hw fd waste can be minimized. Lessn 12 Fd Waste Students will investigate fd waste in their schl, city and cuntry and becme familiar with the idea f fd cmpsting. Students will cnduct a cafeteria survey t better understand hw much fd is actually wasted every day in a typical schl. Lessns 13 and 14 Rtten Research Students will examine hw cmpst becmes sil by examining sil and reading a bk abut cmpsting. A number f bk selectins are included in the lessn frm Learning t Give. Students will als have the pprtunity t see hw a restaurant cmpsts in rder t reduce its fd waste. Lessn 15 Dirty Actin Students nw will wrk tgether t develp a service prject that address the prblem f fd waste. Students can make recmmendatins t help their schls waste less fd r they can cnduct a mini wrkshp fr ther students n the pwer f cmpsting. Students might als create psters that V. Week 5 Citizens and Issues: Peace Making Prject: 40 Acts f Peace Campaign Begin with the End in Mind Students will learn abut mving frm a culture f vilence t a culture f peace within themselves and in their schls. Driving Questin Hw d we build a culture f peace? One f the majr gals f peace educatin is preparing learners fr active participatin in effrts t vercme the vilence and injustice that characterize the present culture f war, by engaging in the kind f creative and innvative thinking that can guide citizen actin and public plicy tward the ablitin f war and the evlutin f a culture f peace. Lessn 16 Finding Peace Within Ourselves Students will explre the meaning f peace, where they wuld like t see peace, and participate in a peace circle with their peers. Lessn 17 Awareness f Anger Students will describe the ways peple cmmunicate and physically react when they have strng feelings, especially anger. Students will recall and describe a time they gt angry. 5

6 Lessn 18 Pint f View Students will better appreciate the imprtance f understanding anther persn's pint f view t slve a cnflict. Respecting Differences Students will bserve that peple, even friends, may disagree in their pinins. Lessn 19 Creating a Peaceful Classrm Students will create a setting fr a peaceful classrm. They will als write letters t the principal agreeing t fllw the peaceful classrm descriptin they created. Students can als chse t fllw the Kids Pledge f Nnvilence: Lessn 20 Peacemakers Students will identify everyday peacemakers.
