3 The RIBA White Rose Awards celebrate design excellence in architecture and the built environment in the Yorkshire region Description Through these annual awards RIBA Yorkshire aims: to highlight the excellent work produced by architects and their teams. to demonstrate the importance of good quality architecture and urban design in contemporary society. to show how good architecture is integral to the economy of the region. to raise the profile of the profession. Criteria The main criterion is design quality irrespective of style, size or complexity. RIBA awards are given for buildings that have high architectural standards, demonstrate sustainable credentials and make a substantial contribution to the local environment. The Community Changing Place Award, supported by Integreat Yorkshire the Regional Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Communities, is given to recognise schemes led by community groups which are of positive benefit to the community. Projects must have been generated, led or driven by community involvement. Examples might be a playground, communal garden, improved public space or refurbished village hall or community facility. Entry to this award is not exclusive to RIBA members or practices and the entry does not have to be submitted by an architect. Please use the Community Changing Place entry form for entries to this category. Judging A panel of architects and lay assessors will create a short list of entries from the projects submitted that are to be visited by the jury as potential winners. The short listing panel and the visiting jury will be made up of RIBA Yorkshire Councillors, lay assessors, previous award winners and other respected architects in practice. Awards are decided by a majority vote and the decision of the jury is final. Shortlisted projects will form the basis of a colour brochure to be distributed at the regional awards dinner. RIBA Yorkshire White Rose Awards Any number of White Rose Awards may be given. It is also at the discretion of the judges to give Commendations in recognition of achievement in specific areas such as Conservation, Accessibility, Regeneration, Sustainability and for Small Projects under the value of 200,000. Special recognition will go to those presented with the Client of the Year and Building of the Year Awards. Presentation The winning projects will be announced at the RIBA Yorkshire Awards Dinner on Friday 16 November 2007 at Leeds Town Hall. Certificates will be given to the winning architects, clients and main contractors. Rules of Entry All entered buildings except Community Changing Place projects, must have an RIBA, RIAS or RSUA member or a Registered / Chartered Practice on the design team. Clients and building contractors are particularly recommended to enter schemes. All projects must be within the RIBA Yorkshire region boundaries. Buildings may not be entered for an award more than twice. All entries must be submitted on the official entry form. The permission of the building owner, and occupier where necessary, must be obtained prior to submission. The building must have been opened and be occupied by the end-user. Entrants must give details of all consultants and contractors they wish to be credited in publicity. The wording of certificates and reports will be based on information supplied. Changes of details must be passed to RIBA Yorkshire in writing and we can accept no responsibility for inaccurate information supplied at entry. Entry Material If you are entering the Community Changing Place Award please see separate form. All entries are judged anonymously; please do not include architect s details on any entry material. Please ensure all entry materials are labelled with project name and that photographs are labelled with the name of the photographer to be credited. A project description no longer than two sides of A4 should set out the client s brief, planning constraints, materials, method of construction, summary of timetable, programme and budget constraints, contract value, the response to accessibility, conservation and sustainability issues and any other relevant facts. All projects must clearly show the designers solutions to issues of sustainability and accessibility in the day to day life of the building. A short statement on why you feel this project should be short-listed and how the client has benefited from this project. Selection of no more than 10 key drawings should include site plan, floor plans and sections, location plan all reduced to A4 size. Compass reference and scale should also be included. Not more than 10 colour A4 photographs should be submitted to reflect the character of the building including site, detail and interior. Sustainability statement: a statement about the approach that has been taken towards addressing issues of sustainability in the design of the project. Include any benchmarking evaluation that may have been completed (BREEAM, SAP, SBEM etc.) A disc of no more than 10 images in jpeg format, 300 resolution with each image submitted in two formats: high and low resolution (high resolution set at maximum quality setting with longest edge of image at 1754 pixels / 14.85cm, low resolution set at high quality setting with longest edge of image at 330 pixels/2.79cm). Please remember that this material will form the basis of the judges decision to shortlist the project.
