DRAMA LESSON PLAN 9:00 Set up materials and prepare to greet students. Is your set ready? 9:15 Greet students and their parents at the door. Have your students start on the arrival activity. (Send your own children to class.) Stagecraft: Birds and fish they blue You will need at least four birds and more fish for Scene Five. Have each child make at least one animal, more if needed. Let them use their imaginations to make whatever sort of bird or fish like. Affix the birds to a clear line and attach to dowel rods so that they can fly. Tape the fish to a plastic tablecloth that will be pulled up to display. 9:30 Begin class on time with offerings and prayer. Older students may volunteer to read aloud. Hold the offering basket and ask if anyone has further offerings. Bless them with this prayer: Offering Lord, bless these offerings and those who bring them. Use them and us to bring glory to you. Continue with the following class prayer: Grades 1 and 2 Grades 3, 4 and 5 Prayer Dear God, I am learning the power of Dear God, I know that words have power. words. I know I can use words to hurt I have seen words hurt people, and I have or to help. When you spoke, the world seen words heal. Yet the power of your was created. You spoke, and I was Word is unequalled. You spoke, and the created. Let my words bring glory to universe came into being. You spoke, you always. In the name of Jesus, and I was created. Let my spoken words amen. bring your glory to all of your creation. In the name of Jesus, amen.

9:35 Bible lesson Please note The Presbyterian Church believes that it is up to the individual to determine for himself whether the day spoken of in Genesis is a 24-hour period, millions of years, or something in between. What is important in this narrative is that God is the author of all that exists, including us. Getting involved in a theological discussion of this nature is confusing to a child whose thinking is limited to concrete matters. While it probably will not come up, please remember this if a child asks. Grades 1 and 2 Grades 3, 4, and 5 Read aloud the Bible passages as indicated in the discussion below. Have the children follow along as you read. Read aloud or have volunteers read the Bible passages as indicated in the discussion below. Allow reluctant readers to say pass. Have the students recall points from the reading. Younger children may need prompting; reread passages where needed. Remember the lesson focus: God spoke everything into existence. 1. Does anyone know the first book of the Bible? Genesis. Do you know what the word genesis means? Beginning. 2. The beginning of what? The Bible; the world; the universe; God s word. 3. The beginning of Genesis tells how God created the universe and human beings. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. But first there was nothing, only God. Read Genesis 1:3. 4. What did God create first? Light. How did he do it? He spoke, and it was so. And it was good. Read Genesis 1: What did God create on the second day? Sky. How did he do it? He spoke, and it was so. (Upper grades: see margin note on 1:6-8 in CEV Bible.)

Read Genesis 1:9 & What did God create on the third day? Land, oceans, and plants. How did he do it? He spoke, and it was so. And it was good. 7. Are you seeing a trend here? Let s see if it continues: what are the first four words of each day of creation (through day six)? (Verses 3, 6, 9, 14, 20, 24) God said, I command If you make something all by yourself, what do you use? Hands, tools, materials. What did God use to make the universe and all that is in it? Spoken words. 9. God is powerful enough to create something -- anything -- just by wanting it! And that means if you exist, God wanted you to be here! Isn t that an incredible thought? You are here because God wants you. When things aren t working out just right for you, remember that. The most powerful being in the universe spoke, and you are the result. God loves you exactly as you are!

9:45 Preparation for performing This performance will differ from most of those the children have seen. The scenes described by the Narrator will be portrayed with props, lighting, and sound. There is no dialogue. This drama will need close attention to detail. You may wish to run through each scene with the prop handlers before performing. Remember that half the fun of performing is setting the stage and costuming. Allow time for them to prepare, with about 20 minutes or less of actual performance. 10:00 Performance: The Seven Days of Creation The Narrator will read passages from the first chapter of Genesis; the prop handlers will portray the events without diaglogue. There is only one speaking role in this play. If you have a lot of children, assign the role of Narrator among them by scene; label their name tags by scene. (Narrator 1, etc.) Prepare ahead Before Sunday, prepare the props, scenery and costumes in the classroom. If the students are greeted by an organized set, they are more inclined to leave it that way. Children respond well to a prepared classroom. 10:20 Have the children clean up materials and put them away. Costumes should be hung and props returned to the prop closet. Be sure the room is neat before dismissing the class. Ask for prayer requests and close with prayer. Thank you so much for being here for our children. You glorify God with your presence here!

THE SEVEN DAYS OF CREATION A play for elementary grades by Betty Greene Salwak Copyright 2002 by Second Presbyterian Church, Indianapolis, IN Characters Scenes Props Narrator Glow-in-the-dark paint Blue and black plastic tablecloths Large cardboard box Sun Moon Birds on rods with clear line Fish Animals of all kinds Nonspeaking roles Prop handlers for each scene Sound effects Adam Eve Black T-shirts? Camera flash or floodlight Thunder tube Boombox, sound effects CD Story This performance will be a departure from the standard play, for there is no dialogue except for the narrative of the first chapter in Genesis. Each scene portrays a day in the creation of all that exists, using primarily props, lighting, and sound effects. The characters of Adam and Eve appear but do not speak. While the props, lighting and sound effects included here are specific, feel free to let the children have input to make it their performance. There is plenty of room for improvisation for such abstract concepts that will be illustrated. Setting See each scene for details.
