1 Fall 2016 ~ Beginners Lesson #1 God s Creation Genesis 1-2:3 Learning Objectives 1. The children will be able to retell the events that took place during the seven days of Creation. 2. The children will recognize that God always gives us everything that we need. Memory Verse: In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. --Genesis 1:1 (NIRV) Getting Started Choose One Activity Make Tactile Bags (things you can feel): Gather and bring in various objects (ex. feathers, a rock, dirt, a leaf, a plastic bag with ice cube, furry stuffed animal, etc.) and place each item into a separate paper lunch bag. Have the children take turns reaching into the bags and feeling each individual object. (Note You will want to do one bag at a time, giving each child a chance to feel the object without saying what they think that it is.) Make sure the children do not peek into the bags. Once all of the children have felt the object, let them guess what they think it is. When all the children have finished touching the objects in all of the bags, you can reveal what the objects were. Tell the children that today we are learning all about God s great creation. Tell them that God created all of the things that were in the bags too! Continue with the lesson. Make Your Favorite Animal: As the students enter the class, give them a small ball of play dough or modeling clay. Ask them to create/make their favorite animal. (NOTE: Be sure to protect the floor with a covering if necessary.) After making their animals, let the children share their creations. Tell the children: Today we are learning all about God s creation. Let s find out all of the wonderful things God created as we listen to the story. Complete the It s a Beautiful World Activity Sheet: See: Preschool Activities It s a Beautiful World Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Message: God gives us what we need. NOTE: As you tell the story of the creation, you will need objects or pictures that you add to a poster, etc. in order to help the children organize and visualize the 7 days of creation. Use your easel, or make a poster as you tell the story having children take turns sticking the appropriate picture under each labeled day, etc. Be creative!! This will also help them to review the material as you explore the discussion questions. 1

2 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Continued DAY 1 In the beginning, God created the heavens (the sky) and the earth. The earth was empty and had no form or shape. Darkness covered the ocean. The Spirit of God was moving over the water. Then God said, Let there be light! And there was light. God saw that the light was good. So He separated the light from the darkness. God named the light day and the darkness night. The evening passed and the morning came. This was the first day. DAY 2 Then God said, Let there be something to divide the water in two! So God made the air to divide the water in two. Some of the water was above the air and some of the water was below it. God named the air sky. The evening passed and the morning came. This was the second day. DAY 3 Then God said, Let the water under the sky be gathered into one place so that the dry land will appear. And that s exactly what happened. God named the dry land earth. He called the waters that were gathered together seas. God saw that it was good. Then God said, Let the earth produce plants. Some plants will make grain for seeds. And let there be trees on the land that bear fruit with seeds in it. Let each kind of plant or trees produce its own kind of seeds. And that s exactly what happened. The land produced plants. Each kind of plant had its own kind of seeds. The land produced trees that bore fruit with seeds in it. Each kind of tree had its own kind of seeds. God saw that it was good. The evening passed and the morning came. This was the third day. DAY 4 Then God said, Let there be lights in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them serve as signs and seasons, days and the years. They will be in the sky to give light to the earth. And it happened. So God made two great lights. He made the brighter light to rule over the day. He made the smaller light to rule over the night. He also made the stars. God put all the lights in the sky to shine on the earth. He put them there to rule over the day and the night. He put them there to separate the light from the darkness. God saw that all these things were good. The evening passed and the morning came. This was the fourth day. DAY 5 God said, Let the water be filled with living things. And let the birds fly in the air above the earth. So God created the large sea animals and every living thing that moves in the sea. God also made every kind of bird that flies. And God saw that this was good. God blessed them and said, Have many young ones and grow in number. Fill the water of the seas and let the birds grow in number on the earth. The evening passed and the morning came. This was the fifth day. DAY 6 Then God said, "Let the earth be filled with animals. Let there be tame animals, and small crawling animals, and wild animals. And let each produce more of its own kind." And it happened. So God made all kinds of wild animals, small crawling animals and tame animals and he made them to produce more of their own kind. God saw that this was good. Then God said, "Let us make man in our 2

3 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Continued image and likeness. And let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the tame animals, over all the earth, and over the small crawling animals. " So God created man in his image, in the image of God. He created them as male and female. God blessed them and said, "Have many children and grow in number. Fill the earth and bring it under your control. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. Rule over every living creature that moves on the earth." Then God said, "Look, I have given you every plant on the face of the whole earth that has grain for seeds. I am giving you every tree that has fruit with seeds in it. They will be food for you. "I am giving every green plant to all of the land animals and the birds of the air for food. I am also giving the plants to all of the creatures that move on the ground. I am giving them to every living thing that breathes." And that's exactly what happened. God saw everything He had made. And it was very good. The evening passed and the morning came. This was the sixth day. DAY 7 So the sky and the earth and everything in them were finished. By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing. So on the seventh day He rested from all of His work. God blessed the seventh day and made it a holy day. He rested on it. He rested from all of the work He had done in creating the world. Discussion Questions: 1. Name some of the things that God created. (Depending on the children in your class, this age group may or may not be able to remember each day s events in the correct order. You may use this question as an opportunity to have the children retell the story. Use your chart or poster from the lesson and help the children remember by saying On the first day, God created and point to the objects under #1 on your chart, prompting the children to answer.) 2. What did God say at the end of each day? (God saw it was good!) 3. Why do you think His creation was good? (Answer will vary. Because it came from God!) 4. What kinds of creatures did God put in the ocean? How about the land? (Answers will vary.) 5. Do you think it was hard for God to create all those things in just 6 days? (Answers will vary- just remember to remind students that God could do anything, even if it seems impossible to us!) 6. What happened on the 7 th day? (God rested.) Talk briefly with the children about what we need in order to grow. Make another chart or poster together. We need: Food to eat, water to drink, light from the sun, air to breathe, etc. Then proceed with the following question: 7. When God made His creation, did He give us everything we need in order to live? (Yes, He gave us plants and animals for food, sunlight in order to see and to help our bodies to grow, water to drink, air to breathe, etc. Remind the children of today s message that God gives us what we need.) 8. How can we say thank you to God for all the wonderful things He created for us? (By taking care of the Earth, being kind to animals, etc.) 3

4 Application to Real Life Enjoy a snack together as you talk with the children about how we can honor God. Remind them that after each day of creation, God said and it was good. God only created everything once; He wants us to help Him care for all of His creation. What are some ways we can take care of His creation? (The children may talk about recycling, treating the animals with kindness, throwing trash away and not littering, etc.) When we show God we are taking care of His creation, this lets Him know that we are so thankful for all He created for us! God will also keep providing for us everything we need by giving us food, water, sunlight, air, shelter and warmth. (Remind the children again of today s message: God gives us what we need. ) We need to remember to help take care of God s creation and to always thank God for all the things He made for us! Memory Work Suggestions 5 minutes 1. Name the two main parts of the Bible and tell what the difference is. (Old Testament before Jesus, New Testament Jesus & After Jesus) 2. Where is the book of Timothy located? In the Old or New Testament? Practice finding it together. 3. Review the third commandment: Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Can anyone explain what this means in their own words? 4. Recite the memory verse. 5. Lead the class in a short prayer about our Love for God and thanking Him for His word in the Bible that we might live in a way that pleases Him. 1. Practice naming the two parts of the Bible. (Old Testament and New Testament) 2. Practice finding the book of Genesis in the Bible. 3. Lead the class in a short prayer about our Love for God and thanking Him for His beautiful creation. 4. Practice repeating the memory verse. 5. Review the first commandment: I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other Gods before me. Activity Ideas Days of Creation Line-up Using the attached creation clip-art and a half sheet of 12 x 18 construction paper (cut in half the long way). Divide the construction paper into 7 sections, labeling each section with numbers for each day of the creation. Have the students cut out the clip art and then glue them in the correct order. Use your chart from the story and do one day at a time. Call out each day and what was created and have the students find the correct corresponding clip art and then glue it in order. (Note: if cutting is too difficult for your children, or would take too long, cut the pictures ahead of time and give each child a set of pictures in his/her own envelope.) 4

5 Activity Ideas - Continued Make a Creation Snack** Materials needed: mini Oreo cookies, frosted mini-wheat s cereal, M&M candies, raisins, stick pretzels, goldfish crackers, animal crackers, mini marshmallows. As you have students help retell the story, add the following ingredients to a large bowl. (**Always know your children and any possible food allergies.) Day 1 - God created the light and dark (mini Oreo cookies). Day 2 - God separated the water on the top from the water on the bottom. The top was sky, and the bottom was ground (Frosted Mini-Wheat s cereal for the clouds and the ground). Day 3 - God made the green grass, the trees, and the flowers (green M&M's candies, stick pretzels, and red M&M's candies). God also made the fruit and the berries (raisins and blue M&M's candies). Day 4 - God created the sun and the moon and the stars (orange M&M's candies and yellow M&M's candies). Day 5 - God made the birds and the fish (Goldfish crackers). Day 6 - God made all the animals that walk on the ground (animal cookies). Day 7 - God rested on the seventh day (marshmallow pillows ). God blessed the seventh day and made it holy. At the end, let each student get a scoop of snack and put it in plastic snack bag or bowl to eat or save for later I Spy God s Creation Game Go on a walk outside of the church building. Tell the children that you are going to play I Spy (perhaps demonstrate once for them) and that they need to give a clue of something they see from God s creation. For example: I spy something green and spiky. (grass). Play the game until each child has gone at least twice. Creation Blocks See: Preschool Activities Creation Blocks Use the templates on the website above, and cut out the pictures for each of the seven days of creation. You will need 7 small boxes (cube sized tissue boxes will work, or visit your local dollar store or craft store) that are covered with wrapping paper. Each picture of the creation day will be glued onto one of the boxes. Then you can use the boxes to retell the story, and to practice putting the days in order. Create your own Animal Talk with children about how fun it must have been for God to create all of the animals. Tell them that today they are going to have some fun trying to create a new animal of their own. Students will need paper and crayons. Give them some examples: put a lion and tiger together and make a liger. (Draw a lion s head on a tiger s striped body). Let the children make up their own totally new animal. Have the children draw their new animal and give it a name. Then be sure to hang their creations up for all to see! Sing the Creation Song See: Grade School Songs Seven Days of Creation **Sung to tune of Do-Re-Mi 5

6 Homework Ideas - Read at home with a grown up the lesson titled: God Made Adam and Eve and God Made Me! (Genesis 2:7; 18-25). - Learn the memory verse for next week: In the image of God He created them. --Genesis 1:27 - Work on memorizing commandment #. - Color the God Made Adam and Eve and God Made Me handout and return it for a sticker.
