Exchange Report First name and Surname: Myrta Zemp Host University: Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Period of study: Fall Semester ACADEMIC INFORMATION General information about the host university The Copenhagen Business School (CBS) is the biggest business school in Scandinavia and counts about students, out of which 800 are exchange students. Further, it is one of the most well-known business schools of Europe: at the Eduniversal-Ranking CBS was ranked as the second best business school, right after Harvard. CBS consists of different campuses, which are located in the Frederiksberg commune, just right outside of the city center of Copenhagen. Teaching situation Most graduate courses are taught in English, only few subjects are taught in other languages (e.g. German, Danish, Spanish). The level of English was advanced, since Scandinavians are very savvy in this language. Nevertheless, most of the professors were very helpful and understanding in this manner. Most of the classes are held once per week, usually a whole morning or afternoon. Depending on the schedule, classes took place during the first or second quarter of the semester. In my case, all classes finished by the end of November and were followed by exams in December. The Danish education system is aiming for a two-way communication and encourages the students to speak up and discuss during the lectures. In my opinion, the workload was lower than the one at USI. One of the reasons is that I have chosen courses without group works but some with more readings. Self-disciplinary is crucial at CBS, since many things need to be done outside of class. Therefore, you can book seats at different libraries where you can study undisrupted. The methods of teaching depend on the course you choose. I have had courses, which were very theoretical, and therefore the teaching-method was rather theoretical. On the other side, I have had classes, which were very practice-oriented, and also the method was rather practical (e.g. field observations). The relation to the professors and other students also depended on the class: it was easy to speak to the professors and assistants but it was rather difficult to get in touch with Danish students, since they all seemed to know each other from before. But don t worry: there are always many other exchange students like you in class, so you can get in touch with them easily! J

Course description KAN-CM_A206 Marketing Communication Planning and Research (7.5 ECTS): Examination form: Home assignment (written product); max. 15 pages; 2 weeks to prepare The course itself was not very interesting due to the insufficient English skills of the two professors. Though, there were some interesting guest lectures. The course gives you a broad overview of Marketing Research but does not go into depth. I have chosen this course because it was mandatory for me to take a research class. KAN-CM_C24 Competing on Social Networks (7.5 ECTS): Examination form: Oral exam based on written product This course was very theoretical and the teaching-style of the professor was rather boring. This course is highly related to the course about Networking at USI. It is about actual networks within companies and not about online social networks (e.g. Facebook). I do recommend this class to management students, who are interested in network theories in firms. KAN-CM_V87 Social Innovation Camp: Creating sustainable tools and business models (7.5 ECTS): Examination form: Home assignment (written product); max. 15 pages This course was different to other courses I have known so far: it was taught at the Villa CBS, a special house where creative business classes take place. The course was group-focused, since many tasks needed to be done in groups. It was quite interesting to go trough a special innovation process called Instant Innovation Camp. The highlight of the course was a camp day on which we developed innovative solutions for a case company. I recommend the course to people who like to be creative and who like to get to know a new way of learning. KAN-CM_A40 Retail Branding & Innovation (7.5 ECTS): Examination form: Oral exam based on written product This course was based on branding strategies, applied to the retail industry. The teacher was quite funny and followed a quite interesting teaching-method. Some theory was mixed with short group workshops during the class. The output of the class was a group work, which included a rather theoretical part and a field observation part. We were asked to go out and to make observations within a certain retail area. The innovation aspect was rather small. I recommend the course to people who are interested in branding in general, but also to the ones interested in retail.

Other The business school has different libraries at the different campuses. The biggest and nicest one is located on Solbjerg Plads, which is the main campus. In order to get a seat for sure, you need to make an online seat reservation. Danish students are very eager and like to study in the library 24/7. Therefore, it is important that you make a reservation well in advance. PC and reading rooms are available as well. Analog to the libraries, there are different canteens. They serve hot and cold food, even during late hours. A nice variety of healthy foods and drinks can be bought at reasonable prices. The offer is definitely better than the one at USI. 2. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Information before to leave I have chosen CBS because I wanted to go to a Scandinavian country to do my exchange semester. Further, Copenhagen is a beautiful city and the university is very close to the city center. The mix of a great business school and an interesting city gave me an easy choice. For information, I have visited the homepage of CBS: Further, the university has sent an information package before departure. Also, the international office staff of CBS is very friendly and extremely helpful! CBS communicates well in advance, which application forms are needed and how they are to be handled. As long as you follow all procedures, you are fine. Travel I have chosen to fly with EasyJet from Basel to Copenhagen. It is a affordable way to travel and the airports are the same as for other flights. The area of Frederiksberg, where CBS is located, is then easily reachable by Metro, which leaves directly from the airport. Arrival Once you get accepted by CBS you will get a Buddy, who helps you during your stay. My buddy picked me up from the airport and took me to my residence. Further, the buddy gives you a welcome package, which includes all information needed for the first few weeks. It is advisable to arrive 2-3 days before the official program starts. If you don t participate in the Danish language course, which starts one week before, you should give yourself a weekend before the first day. These days are good to arrive and to get settled with everything. Once the official program starts, you barely have time to do many other things by side. One of the first things to be done is to get a bike. This allows you to move freely and to be independent from the Metro and buses. It is recommendable to get a bike before everyone else does, since the prices will rise fast, according to the rising demand.

Housing First of all, make sure that you are online when the application platform for the CBS student residences opens! Otherwise, you will have no chance to get a place in a residence and you will be forced to look for a private housing. I absolutely recommend staying at Porcelænshaven! It is a student residence on one of the campuses of CBS. It accommodates about 100 exchange students on five floors. You have your own room with a small kitchen, though you need to share a bathroom with another person of the same gender. If you are a little flexible, it is no problem to share the bathroom. Further, the residence is quite nice and the rooms are reasonable big. I have chosen a medium-sized room and I could invite some friends for dinner without problems. A great point of this residence is that there are many other exchange students just next door. You never feel alone because there is always someone home. Also, most of the student activities took place close to the residence, so it is quite central. To the main campus it only takes 10 minutes by foot or 5 minutes by bike. A small negative point is that you sometimes hear the other students partying late. Though, the walls are quite soundproof, you need to be ok waking up sometimes because of the noise. Nevertheless, I find that the advantages are way better than some small disadvantages, which you will have everywhere else, too! Costs The biggest expense is the housing. It has to be said that the price for the housing is high, but you get offered many things for it: you will get a new bed-linen, sheet, towels, etc. and you don t need to worry about the time after your departure. Denmark s prices can be compared to the ones in Switzerland. Therefore, the living-expenses are quite the same as back home. For some courses, I also needed to buy books. I preferred to buy them, since the ones at the library were mostly lent to someone. You can try to buy used books on the intranet of CBS and at the end you can also try to sell them again. In terms of transportation it is highly recommendable to get a used bike. Copenhagen is very bike-friendly and allows you to get everywhere quite easily. Further, it helps you to save on the transportation costs. International relations office You can find the international office at Dalgas Have. The staff is very helpful if you need help of if you don t know how to handle forms and so on. The international office informs you about important things such as enrollment for courses and so on. Further, they help you to get registered in Frederiksberg commune and also to get a yellow health insurance card which you have to get as soon as you stay longer than 3 months. Don t hesitate to contact the international office at any time or just go and pass by the office.

Social activities Especially during the first week, the mandatory introduction week for exchange students, you get to know many other exchange students. Also depending on the student residence you are staying, you will do more or less things with others. It was very easy to get in touch with other exchange students, whereas it was rather difficult to get in touch with locals. Danish students are very busy: they all have part-time jobs besides their studies, plus they all are quite eager with studying. Nevertheless, I got to know some locals and overall, they are very nice. I have participated in the introduction program, which you can buy as a package in advance. It included evening activities, which took place after the information sessions during the day. I highly recommend participating in these activities, since it is an easy way to get to know people from all over the world and also to get to know the city and its nightlife. During the semester, a committee is constantly organizing events and trips. I participated in the Tour of Denmark, which you can book in advance. It is highly recommendable to book the tours in advance, since they were all booked out fast. Language Danish is the official language, though the Danes are very good in English. Everybody knows English, no matter which age. The high level of English helped me to improve my language skills during my stay. Other I definitely recommend doing an exchange at CBS. You can experience a great business school and you have the chance to get to know the great city Copenhagen! I m at disposal of other students, so that they can contact me for more information: yes, no
