Level of Biblical Learning (Bible) The Bible helps me know more about Jesus. Bible Truth God wants people to read the Bible. Life Application I can read and learn from the Bible. Bible Phrase I can learn from the Bible. Psalm 119:73 Icon Key See It An activity that engages visual learners by incorporating pictures, books, Bible costumes, or other visuals into the lesson Hear It An activity that engages auditory learners by providing music or other sounds and encouraging children to interact with the lesson with their sense of hearing (based on Luke 4:16-22) 1. PREVIEW Week 1: Make Scrolls Welcome each child by name and with a smile. Tell the group how happy you are to see them at church today. Place a Bible and a scroll on a table. (See the Make a Scroll bonus activity and illustration on page 7.) Say: Long ago the Bible was printed on an early type of paper and rolled up to keep it clean and dry. These first Bibles were called scrolls. Demonstrate for children how to use great care to unroll the scroll. Show children the Bible and say: Today, our Bible is a printed book. Flip through the Bible to show children the words printed inside. Let each child make a simple scroll by rolling both ends of a sheet of paper toward the middle. Tie them with a piece of string if you like, or hold each one together with a rubber band. Save the scrolls if you plan to use the Bible Phrase Scrolls bonus activity on page 3. Need: Bible, large scroll for demonstration, sheets of paper, string or rubber bands In advance: Make the demonstration scroll according to the directions on page 7; save this scroll for future use. Week 2: Bible Covers Provide materials children may use to make protective covers for their personal Bibles and/or for classroom Bibles. Purchase book covers and let children wrap them around Bibles, or make covers by cutting wide strips of poster board to fit around each Bible s front cover. (Tape the ends together inside the front cover.) Print this lesson s Bible phrase on the covers: I can learn from the Bible. Psalm 119:73 Children may use art supplies to decorate their Bible covers. Talk about why children should take good care of their Bibles, emphasizing the fact that the Bible is God s Word and is the most special book they can own. Need: Bibles, book covers or poster board and art supplies to make covers Do It An activity that engages kinesthetic learners by providing opportunities to actively and physically respond to the lesson Think About Notes to leaders about ideas for adapting specific activities or tips for using the leader guide 2 Special Buddies 2011 LifeWay Press

2. POWER UP (Introduce the Bible Truth: God wants people to read the Bible.) Say: God wants you to read the Bible. If you read your Bible every day, you will learn more about Him and how He wants you to live. Select an activity that helps children recognize the Bible, find out how they can take care of their own Bible, and understand why they should read the Bible often. Show Me the Real Bible Week 1 Week 2 [Use these boxes for session planning.] Place three or four books on the table, including one Bible. Challenge each child to look carefully at the books and identify which book is the Bible. Assist those with visual impairments by letting them feel each book s cover and flip through the pages. Need: several books, including one Bible Happy Bible Song Week 1 Week 2 Sing these new lyrics to the tune of Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush : This is the way I touch my Bible, touch my Bible, touch my Bible. This is the way I touch my Bible, the Bible is God s Word. This is the way I open my Bible, open my Bible, open my Bible. This is the way I open my Bible, the Bible is God s Word. This is the way I read my Bible, read my Bible, read my Bible. This is the way I read my Bible, the Bible is God s Word. This is the way I close my Bible, close my Bible, close my Bible. This is the way I close my Bible, the Bible is God s Word. Model for children how to take good care of their Bibles, such as turning the pages and putting it down gently. The Ribbon Marks the Spot Week 1 Week 2 Before class, prepare a paper bookmark for each child. Glue a piece of colorful ribbon to the back of each bookmark; let it hang over about one inch on each end. Provide washable markers, crayons, or stickers children may use to decorate the bookmarks. Use hand over hand assistance as needed so that each child can make a bookmark. Praise each child for the beautiful bookmark he makes. Say: This bookmark is to put in your Bible. God wants you to read your Bible every day. If children have brought their personal Bibles, place the markers inside. Need: Bibles, paper, ribbon, washable markers, crayons, stickers 3. PLUG INTO THE BIBLE STORY BONUS ACTIVITIES These sidebars contain several bonus activities. These are extra activities, all of which enhance the lesson as a whole. Use them with an individual child, small group, or large group. Bonus: Bible Gift If you have the budget to do so, consider gifting each child in your class with a copy of the Read to Me Bible for Kids (Holman Bible Publishers). This is an excellent Bible for new readers, and it provides lots of colorful Bible story pictures. Invite parents to join you for a formal Bible presentation ceremony. Encourage children and parents to remember to bring Bibles to church each Sunday. Bonus: Bible Phrase Scrolls Make copies of the Bible phrase from learner guide page 12. If children made simple rolled paper scrolls in the Week 1 Preview activity, let children glue the Bible phrase inside their scrolls now. (If children have not already made scrolls, simply glue the Bible phrase on sheets of paper and roll them up.) Need: rolled up sheets of paper, Bible phrase from learner guide page 12 (Emphasize the Bible Story) Invite children to open their Bibles to Luke 4: If you made bookmarks as a Power Up activity, use them to mark the passage. Tell the story in one of the following ways. 3

Bonus: Bible Cheer Encourage children to participate in this cheer: Leader: Give me a B! Children: B! Leader: Give me an I! Children: I! Leader: Give me another B! Children: B! Leader: Give me an L! Children: L! Leader: Give me an E! Children: E! Leader: What does it spell? Children: Bible! If you like, provide pompoms children may wave as they cheer. If you made a B-I-B-L-E poster for the B-I-B-L-E activity on page 6, use that as a visual for this activity as well. Be sure to show children an actual Bible. As children are able, allow them to lead the cheer. Need: A Bible, B-I-B-L-E poster (optional), pom-poms (optional) Two Kinds of Bibles Learner guide pages 13 and 14 show two different kinds of Bibles. Show children examples of these two Bibles, but also allow children (based on Luke 4:16-22) Flannel Board Story Week 1 Week 2 Use a flannel board to tell the Bible story. (If you do not have a flannel board, make one by attaching a large piece of flannel to a sturdy rectangular piece of cardboard.) Make copies of the Jesus picture/word card and the scroll picture/word card from learner guide page 14. Also cut out the Bible story picture from learner guide page 8. Hot glue a small piece of sandpaper to the back of each so they will stick on the flannel. Place these items one at a time on the flannel board as you tell the story. Need: flannel board, picture/word cards from learner guide page 14, Bible story picture from learner guide page 8, hot glue, sandpaper There Is a Name I Love to Hear Week 1 Week 2 Use learner guide page 8 to tell the story to children; use your own words. Instruct children to hold up their Bibles each time they hear the name Jesus. Demonstrate how they are to do this, including how they should gently return their Bibles to their laps after holding them up for a moment. Be sure leaders are close by to physically assist a child who needs physical assistance to lift her Bible. Need: a Bible for each child, learner guide page 8 All Dressed Up Week 1 Week 2 to show their friends a Read the story directly from learner guide page 8 in a loud, different-looking Bible they strong voice. Read it a second time, allowing children to act out have brought from home. the story as they listen. Props may include Bible-times costumes Explain that there are and a Bible scroll (see page 7 for directions for making one). different versions of Bibles, Repeat the activity several times if more than one child has interest in but every Bible contains playing the role of Jesus. If possible, take instant-print pictures of children as God s Word. 4

they participate. Display them in the room for the remainder of the session. Need: Bible scroll, learner guide page 8, Bible-times costumes, instant-print camera or digital camera and printer 4. PULL IT TOGETHER (Bible Story Review & Bible Phrase Activity) Say: Today we talked about how Jesus read the Bible scroll at church. He told everyone He was God s Son. The people were amazed. They did not know He was God s Son. God wants you to read your Bible or listen as someone at home reads the Bible to you each day. The activities below provide Bible story review as well as interaction with today s Bible phrase. Jesus Read Week 1 Week 2 Each child needs a copy of learner guide page 9. Read the question: What did Jesus read? Talk about the two options. Ask: Did Jesus read a Bible scroll, or did Jesus read a computer screen? To answer, children should point to the picture of the Bible scroll. Ask some additional questions about the story, such as Where did Jesus go? (church) and Whose Son is Jesus? (God s). As children answer the questions, provide verbal praise and give each child a smiley-face sticker or a Bible sticker ( , available at Need: learner guide page 9, smiley-face stickers or Bible stickers Bonus: Puzzle Challenge Cut apart learner guide page 12 to create a Bible phrase puzzle for each child. (Make several copies and laminate them prior to cutting if you like.) Some children may need three puzzle pieces while others may be able to handle up to 6 or 7. Let each child practice finding Psalm 119:73 in her Bible. As you work the puzzles, repeat the Bible phrase several times. Praise children for doing a good job of putting the puzzle pieces together and saying the Bible phrase. Need: Bibles, learner guide page 12, scissors (teacher use), laminator (optional) Pass the Bible Week 1 Week 2 Model how to hold a Bible carefully with both hands. Demonstrate how to pass the Bible from your hands to the hands of the child beside you. Say: I can learn from the Bible. Encourage children to pass the Bible one to another, repeating the phrase each time. If a child is nonverbal, other children my assist by saying the phrase aloud as that child passes it. Praise children for being good helpers, and for loving to read the Bible, just as Jesus did. Find Psalm 119:73 in each child s Bible. Print the verse on a dry-erase board for an additional visual if you like, or show children learner guide page 12. Need: Bible, learner guide page 12, dry-erase board (optional) Sign It Week 1 Week 2 Use learner guide page 10 to help children focus on today s Bible phrase: I can learn from the Bible (Psalm 119:73). Practice looking up the verse in children s Bibles, and repeating the phrase together. Provide nonverbal children with the Bible picture/word card from learner guide page 14 so they may hold it up when the rest of the group says the word Bible. Visit for a visual demonstration of how to sign the word Bible, which actually combines the signs for the words Jesus and book. (See the illustration at right.) Sign the word together as you repeat the phrase. Need: Bibles, learner guide page 10, Bible picture/word card from learner guide page 14 5

Bonus: Tell Me the Story Game Place bookmarks at several of your favorite Bible story pictures in the Read to Me Bible for Kids (Holman Bible Publishers). Allow children to work independently or in small groups to open the Bible at the bookmarks. Ask children to share with you what they see in each picture. Give simple reviews of the Bible stories the pictures illustrate. Say: I am so thankful that we have Bibles to use at church. I hope you will use your Bible at home, too. Some people do not have money to buy a Bible. Other people live in countries where there are no Bibles. Let s pray and ask God to allow everyone to have a Bible so they can learn more about Him. We ll also thank God for missionaries, who take Bibles to people all over the United States and the world. Need: Read to Me Bible, paper bookmarks Levels of Biblical Learning Products Visit levelsofbiblicallearning to view dozens of products and puzzles to enhance your sessions. Products may be ordered online or by calling 1 (800) PERSONALIZE THE LESSON (Applying Today s Lesson to Daily Life: I can read and learn from the Bible.) Say: Jesus used the Bible at church. Now, let s talk about what you can do every day to learn more about Jesus. Select an activity to give children practical ideas for making the Bible a part of their daily lives. Every Day Week 1 Week 2 Give each child learner guide page 11. Look at each picture and help children describe each one. Ask: Remember what Jesus did in the story today? Which picture shows what God wants you to do every day? As children point to, circle, or look at the picture of the child reading the Bible, say: When you read the Bible, you learn more and more about Jesus. We use the Bible a lot at church. You can read your Bible at home, too. Let children color in the star for Sunday, indicating they have read the Bible today. Be sure to send the page home so parents may encourage Bible reading this week. Need: learner guide page 11, pencils The B-I-B-L-E Week 1 Week 2 Print the word Bible on a sheet of poster board. Sing the song, The B-I-B-L-E with children (it is available for listening or download at itunes), pointing to each letter as it is sung. Let children take turns in pairs to lead the song. One child may point to the letters on the poster while the other holds up the Bible. Children who are not leading the song may make the sign for Bible each time the word is spelled out (see an illustration of the sign on learner guide page 10 or page 5 in this leader guide). Remind children that the Bible is God s Word. When children read the Bible, they learn more about Jesus. As children are able, ask them to share something they have learned from the Bible today. Need: Bible; song, The B-I-B-L-E ; the word Bible printed on a sheet of poster board; learner guide page 10 Bibles Puzzle Week 1 Week 2 LifeWay s puzzle, Bibles ( , available at www. lifeway.com), shows the progression of the Bible from tablets to scroll to parchment to the printed version children use today. As children work the puzzle, ask them to point to the scroll and then the modern-day Bible. (Show children an actual Bible and a scroll as a visual.) As children work, talk about how children can use the Bible to learn Bible verses, find out more about Jesus, and read the stories they have heard at church. Remind children that reading the Bible is important because it teaches them how God wants them to live. Note: If you do not have this puzzle, check with leaders in the children s department to see if they have one you can borrow, or use the visuals of Bibles and scrolls from learner pages 13 and 14. Need: Bible, LifeWay s Bibles puzzle, scroll, visuals from learner guide pages 13 and 14 6

6. PASS IT ON (Transition to Worship/Home) Week 1: Picture This Take a photograph of each child reading a Bible at church. Send the pictures home as a reminder to children to read their Bibles every day. Week 2: Remember to Bring Your Bible Make a copy of one of the Bibles from learner guide page 13 or learner guide page 14 for each child (choose either the black Bible or the Read to Me Bible for Kids). Give one to each child as she leaves. Say: Remember to bring your Bible to church next Sunday. Bonus: Make a Scroll Follow these directions to make a durable scroll you can save for repeated use in your classroom: Cut two 1 ½ or 2-inch diameter wooden dowel rods to about inches in length. Acquire four wooden finials from old curtain rods; you ll need the kind with wooden screws attaching the ends. Screw these onto each end of the dowel rods. Spray paint the wood with gold or brown paint. Cut heavyweight poster paper to fit the length of your dowel rods. It needs to be about three feet long. Staple or tape the paper to the wooden dowels. This is a permanent surface for your scroll. Anytime you wish to print a Bible phrase or any other text for your scroll, print it on a separate sheet of paper and lay it on top of this permanent surface; this keeps you from having to replace the poster board each time. Simply roll up your scroll when not in use and secure it with a ribbon. Note: See illustration at left. Need: wooden dowels, wooden finials from old curtain rods, spray paint in brown or gold, poster paper, stapler or tape, ribbon 7

ABCs of Becoming a Christian One of the greatest joys of being a Sunday School teacher is having the opportunity to lead a child or one of his parents to Christ. We strongly affirm that ALL children can make a decision to become a Christian. Our job is to teach them about God, the Bible, and what it means to become a Christian. Lessons in the Special Buddies curriculum will never assume or imply that children with special needs are safe or will automatically spend eternity in heaven. Instead, we intentionally include the plan of salvation and continually focus on helping children know Christ can be their Lord and Savior if they invite Him to be so. The ABCs of Becoming a Christian is a simple and effective way to outline for all children what steps must be taken to become a Christian.

(based on Luke 4:16-22) One day went back to Nazareth, where He had grown up. While was there, He went to church. stood where everyone could see Him. A church helper gave the Bible scroll. read, God sent Me to teach people about Him and to help people. rolled up the Bible scroll. He gave it to the church helper and sat down. Everyone was watching. said, These words I have read from the scroll are about Me. The people were surprised. They knew He was the son of Mary and Joseph, but they did not know that was God s Son. Your child heard this Bible story at church this week. Use this page to read the story again to your child. Ask questions for review, such as: Where did Jesus go? (church) What did Jesus read? (the Bible scroll) Who is God s Son? (Jesus) 8

Read the question. To answer, point to the picture of the Bible scroll or the computer. Each Sunday as you prepare to go to church, help your child remember to take his Bible. Remind your child that two great ways to learn more about God are to go to church and to read his Bible. 9

The sign for the word Bible actually combines the motions for Jesus and book. See the sign demonstrated at Practice saying the Bible phrase and signing the word Bible. Let your child sign the word for family members, friends, and neighbors this week. This can be a way your child can be a witness to others about her love for God and the Bible. 10

Point to the picture of something you can do every day to learn more about Jesus. Set a good example for your child by letting him see you reading your Bible at home. You can start a bedtime ritual by reading the Bible to your child every night and saying a prayer together. Let your child color in the star for each day this week that he reads his Bible. 11
