1 Juan loves to play games. His favorite game is chess because it requires a lot of thought. He likes games that require skill. Juan also likes to play other board games like checkers. If he is alone, Juan likes to play video games. (A) Juan likes to think. (B) Juan enjoys checkers. (C) Juan enjoys playing games. 28 My grandmother s name is Mary. She is a special person. Every Saturday, I go over to her house, and we cook together. We bake cookies and talk. My favorite cookie is chocolate chip. After we finish baking, we go outside and pick flowers from her garden. (A) Baking cookies is fun. (B) I like to spend time with my grandmother. (C) You should only bake chocolate chip cookies. 29
2 My mom bakes the best apple pie I ve ever tasted. She even won a prize at the local fair. Sometimes, people ask my mom to bake a pie for their birthdays. When she bakes a pie you can smell it all over the house. Boy, it sure makes me hungry thinking about Mom s apple pie. (A) My mom s apple pie tastes very good. (B) You can smell an apple pie when it is baking. (C) Thinking about apple pie can make you hungry. 30 Sam puts on his boots and goes outside. He is excited. Today is Saturday. That means he can do whatever he likes. He hears the birds and smells the fresh air. Sam decides to go on a hike. Hiking up mountain, he sees chipmunks, deer, and rabbits. He is very happy to be outside. (A) Sam saw chipmunks, deer, and rabbits. (B) Sam enjoys being outside. (C) Sam hikes up the mountain every Saturday. 31
3 Sarah is looking forward to her birthday. In just two more weeks, she will be eight years old. She is going to have a skating birthday party. She has invited all of her friends. (C) Sarah is having a birthday soon. 32 The circus is coming to town! Jack and Matt are really excited. They have been talking about the circus all day. In fact, in reading class, the teacher asked them to stop talking so much. Matt said that last year he ate too much cotton candy. (A) Jack and Matt are going to the fair. (B) Don t talk too much in reading class. (C) On time, Matt ate too much cotton candy. 33
4 Aunt Mary goes to the beach every summer. She owns a house on the beach. She always invites Sarah, her niece, to go with her. Mary and Sarah love to walk along the beach and squish the sand between their toes. They splash in the water and build beautiful sand castles. (A) Squishing sand between your toes is fun. (B) Aunt Mary and Sarah go to the beach every summer. (C) They build sand castles. 34 Have you ever seen a rainbow after a storm? The colors are amazing! Red, yellow, green, blue, and many other colors appear in the sky. When a storm comes and I get scared, I remind myself that after the storm a rainbow may appear. As soon as the rain stops, I run outside and look into the sky. (A) Rainbows come out after it stops raining. (B) Rainbows are red, yellow, green, and blue. (C) Storms can be scary. 35
5 Ted has a large bug collection. He collects all types of bugs and puts them in jars. He puts holes in the top so that the bugs can breathe. He also collects leaves and other things to feed his bugs. Today, Ted will look for new bugs. Ted s sister thinks his hobby is gross. Ted likes that, too! (A) Ted collects bugs. (B) Make sure to feed your bugs. (C) Ted s hobby is very gross. 36 Humans have five senses. They are taste, touch, see, hear, and smell. Most people are not aware of how they taste. Food goes into your mouth and taste buds on your tongue allow you to taste. The smell of the food also helps you to taste it. Have you ever smelled something and it seemed like you could taste it? (A) There are five senses. (B) Taste buds are on the tongue. (C) You taste using your tongue and your nose. 37
6 What is that sound, like a song, coming from outside the window? A small little bird flies to the bird feeder to get some sweet juice. It is a hummingbird. The hummingbird gets its name because of the sound its wings make as it flies. Many people enjoy listening to hummingbirds. (A) Hummingbirds like sweet juice. (B) Hummingbirds make a humming sound. (C) People enjoy listening to hummingbirds. 38 Jack is going on a camping trip with his Boy Scout troop to Big Rock Mountain. Since Jack is the leader, he will be the first one ready to leave. He has to lead the troop to its campsite and set up camp. Then, he has to get a fire started and make sure everyone is safe. (A) The troop is climbing Big Rock Mountain. (B) Jack is the leader of his Boy Scout troop. (C) To go camping, you must know how to start a fire. 39
7 There are clothes on his bed and clothes on the floor. Reid has things all over the place! You can even see part of a sandwich under his bed. This is the biggest disaster I have ever seen. Reid s mom is coming home soon. He only has one hour to get it clean, or else! (A) Reid likes to keep sandwiches. (B) Reid has a very messy room. (C) Reid s mom will be home in one hour. 40 It is two weeks, four days, and twelve hours until the science fair project is due. Anna knows that the best way to get a good grade is to start working early. She wants to win a ribbon at the science fair, so her project has to be good! She is excited. (A) Anna will do a science fair project. (B) Anna s project is due in two weeks, four days, and twelve hours. (C) Anna will win first place at the science fair. 41
