1 Home Care Services Giving Medicine/IV Fluids in a Bag with Curlin Pump Receiving medicine and supplies When you receive a shipment, make sure you have the correct medicine and supplies. Check the medicine, supplies and invoice for your child s name, prescription and quantity. If all is correct, sign and date the invoice and accept the delivery. It is important to keep the yellow copy of your invoices for future reference. We are unable to take back any supplies once they are in your home. Carefully look at the IV bags, checking for leaks or discoloration and that they have not expired. See the pharmacy label for storage of medication and supplies. Flush syringes # saline syringes with ml of saline per syringe. # heparin ( unit/ml) syringes with ml of heparin per syringe. q Saline flush syringe q Blue heparin flush syringe 10 units/ml q Yellow heparin flush syringe 100 units/ml 1 of 6

2 Supplies Work surface or tray Cleaning Alcohol-based Non-sterile gloves Drape product hand gel Alcohol pads Blue tip cover Curlin pump PN tubing white filter IV medication Preparing the work surface 1. Clean the work surface well with disinfectant and allow to air dry. 2. Wipe the outside of the pump daily with disinfectant and let dry. 3. Check that the pump has working batteries. 4. Wash hands well with soap and water. 5. Gather supplies and place them in a spot near the work area. Setting up the tubing 1. Wash or gel hands. 2. Open 1 drape, handling the edges only, and place on the cleaned surface. 3. Arrange the supplies on the drape. Place the pump next to the drape edge. 4. New tubing: Drop the new tubing onto the center of the drape. Reusing: Take the tubing out of the zip closed bag and place onto the center of the drape. 5. If giving more than 1 type of medicine, you will need 3 of therapy s ID labels. 6. Wash or gel hands. Put on gloves. 7. New tubing: Remove the oval yellow tab on the tubing. Remove the spike cover from the tubing. 2 of 6

3 Reusing tubing: Scrub the connection between the empty IV bag and tubing for 15 seconds. Let dry for 15 seconds. Remove the empty IV bag from the tubing. 8. Pull the tab off the new IV bag. 9. Twist and push the spike into the new IV bag. 10. Remove gloves. Wash or gel hands. 11. If giving more than 1 medicine, place the ID labels on the tubing, and where it connects to the child s catheter. Placing the tubing in the pump 1. Open the door of the pump by lifting the latch. 2. Insert the blue tab into the hole marked with a blue arrow. 3. Lay the soft section of the tubing over the top of the pump. Insert the yellow piece into the hole marked with a yellow arrow. 4. Close the door and latch in place. 5. Turn the pump ON. 6. Note remaining battery power. Change if remaining power is ¼ or less. 7. At the highlighted PROGRAM screen, press the YES key. 8. At the highlighted REPEAT Rx screen, press the YES key. (If at screen, RESUME is highlighted, press down the arrow key once to highlight REPEAT Rx. ) 9. Watch the pump review program. Press any key to stop the automatic review. Press the YES key each time to scroll through each setting as listed below: DELAY: OFF NEXT? YES BAG Vol: ml Vol TBI: ml INF RATE: ml/hr TOT TIME: : HH:MM KVORATE: 0.0 ml/hr DONE? YES Priming the tubing (new tubing only) If reusing tubing, skip the next section and see the SASH/SASASH handout to give medication. 1. Turn the pump on. 2. At the highlighted PROGRAM screen, press YES. 3. Press the PRIME button once, then again while holding the button down until the medication fills the filter and continues to the end of the tubing. 3 of 6

4 When in doubt, throw it out. If medicine or tubing is dropped or becomes contaminated, throw it out. Call Home Care Services for replacement supplies if needed. 4. Press YES when done priming, returning the pump to the RUN screen. 5. See the SASH/SASASH handout to give medication. Starting/restarting an infusion 1. Turn the pump on. At the highlighted PROGRAM screen, press the YES key. 2. At the highlighted REPEAT RX screen, press YES. 3. To restart an interrupted infusion, arrow down to RESUME, then press YES. 4. At the next screen, highlight RUN using the down arrow; then press YES to restart the infusion. 5. Remove gloves. Wash or gel hands. Pump troubleshooting chart Message What caused the problem Solution INFUSION COMPLETE The infusion has finished. Press the PAUSE key and turn the pump off by pressing the OFF key. AIR-IN-LINE The pump has detected air in the tubing. Remove the tubing from the pump. If bubbles are present, hold the tubing upright. Tap the bubbles past the pump section toward the patient. RESUME the infusion. Press and hold PRIME for 3 seconds. Then press RUN. DOWN OCCLUSION Kinks or clamps on the catheter or IV tubing. Kink in the catheter under the dressing. The pump needs to be reset. The catheter is not flushing well. Check the tubing from the pump to child as well as the catheter. Unkink tubing or open any closed clamps. When the problem is fixed, the pump will automatically resume infusion. Reset the pump by turning OFF, taking the tubing out. Replace the tubing and turn back ON. Position the IV bag above the pump. Disconnect the IV tubing from the catheter. Try briskly flushing with saline. Reconnect and RESUME. 4 of 6

5 Message PERFORM ROUTINE MAINTENENCE What caused the problem Yearly pump maintenance is required. Solution Call the Home Care Services supply coordinator, not the nurse. Tell them the pump is giving an alert and they will arrange for a pump exchange. THIS IS NOT AN EMERGENCY the pump will continue to operate as usual. UP OCCLUSION The infusion bag is empty. There is a kink in the IV bag spike port or in the tubing from the IV bag to the pump. If the bag is empty, proceed with disconnect and flushing. Unkink the tubing at the spike port or from the bag to the pump. UNATTENDED PUMP The pump has been in Pause mode for more than 2 minutes. Press the RUN/PAUSE key to start the infusion. DOOR OPEN; SET NOT PROPERLY INSTALLED The pump door is open. The tubing is not put into the pump correctly. Fully open the door, taking the tubing out of the pump. Put back in. Fully close the door (latch). REPLACE SET The pump has detected that the IV tubing is damaged. Turn the pump off. Disconnect the IV tubing and flush the catheter. Set up the new IV bag and tubing. Call Home Care Services if you need help and report the event the next day to Home Care Services. EMPTY BATTERY LOW C BATTERIES Battery power is too low for the pump to operate. Only about 1 hour of battery power is left. Turn the pump OFF. Replace both of the C-cell batteries. The program will not be affected by the removal of batteries. ALARM: ALL OTHER ERROR CODES All the error codes require pump evaluation. For all error codes, call Home Care Services immediately. 5 of 6

6 Who to call For emergencies: Call 911 for ALL emergencies. Notify Home Care Services about your child s status after the emergency situation is addressed. For urgent issues after business hours Call Home Care Services at or , and press 0 to reach our answering service for urgent issues that cannot wait until the morning or if you are unsure what to do. A Home Care Services nurse will return your call as soon as possible. For supplies: Contact Home Care Services between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to order supplies. Call or Please contact us at least 1 week ahead so that you do not run out. Always keep an extra 3 to 5 days of supplies, and 1 dose of medication on hand in case of emergency.
