4 What is the Division of Applied Interdisciplinary Studies? The Division of Applied Interdisciplinary Studies is a group of distinct and independent academic and service units that foster collaboration in program development, research initiatives, and service delivery. The Division of Applied Interdisciplinary Studies is composed of the Center for Psychological Studies; the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences; the Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice; and the Mailman Segal Center for Human Development. In addition to our well-established graduate degrees, we have a range of new programs currently in development. Visit for a list of all programs in the division. Students in divisional programs gain expertise in subject matters as well as develop a set of transferable skills including communication, data analysis, and applied research that will enable them to cross professional boundaries and take advantage of evolving opportunities in the job market. 5 Forensic Psychology The Master of Science in Forensic Psychology program is designed for those beginning or continuing their careers where psychology and the legal system intersect in fields such as law, national security, law enforcement, corrections, child protection, family law, and the military. The program provides students with a strong academic foundation in the theories and concepts of clinical, social, and scientific psychology and their application to legal questions and situations. Students will be introduced to how psychologists use the psychological assessments typically utilized in criminal, civil, and family court, as well as social service cases. Concentrations are available in legal system or mental health workers, first responders, and national security and disaster teams. M.S. 36 credits General Psychology Graduates work in social agencies, in school and community settings, in business and industry environments, and in hospitals. Our program prepares students for advanced academic studies and professional work in settings where interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and foundational knowledge in psychological theory are an asset. M.S. 30 credits Clinical Psychology The world doesn t change through imagination alone. That s why our students engage in a proven combination of research-based classes and extensive, hands-on clinical experiences. The center s two APA-accredited doctoral programs prepare future psychologists to serve the mental health needs of diverse populations, provide clients with effective treatment, and contribute to the advancement of the field through innovative research and professional clinical practice. Concentrations/tracks are available in child, adolescent, and family psychology; forensic psychology; health psychology; long-term mental illness; multicultural/diversity; neuropsychology; and psychodynamic psychotherapy. 6 Family Therapy When clients can see how their personal relationships shape their everyday lives, the door opens to a new world of positive change. When they learn how to shape those relationships, real change takes place. Through diverse clinical experiences, students serve individuals, couples, families, and groups. Student Testimonial As a crime scene detective in South Florida, the master s degree program in criminal justice with emphasis in investigative forensic technology that I learned here at has benefited me greatly. The professors have careers in the field and share their expertise with the students by providing valuable research studies on how to collect evidence and how that evidence is processed once submitted to the crime lab. Our program provides the theoretical foundations and training necessary for school psychologists to collaborate effectively with educators, parents, and other professionals to address students needs through assessment and intervention. Offered in Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Tampa Psy.S. 79 credits Psy.D. 118 credits The Psy.S. in School Psychology is Florida Department of Education approved and has been granted National Association of School Psychologist recognition with conditions contingent upon unit accreditation for the period of January 1, 2011 to December 31, School Counseling Today s students face diverse challenges and immense opportunities. School counselors help curious young minds in pre-k through grade 12 overcome obstacles and learn how to make a significant contribution to the world around them. Counselors also support students and their parents during transitional periods as students enter gifted study, apply to college, or begin promising careers. 9 programs Human Services Administration Gerontology The Bachelor of Science in Human Services Administration prepares professionals with the administrative skills and practical knowledge necessary for leadership roles within social services, education, health care, public service, nonprofit organizations, and supporting industries. The purpose of this interdisciplinary program is to provide students with an understanding of administration, public policy, ethics, human behavior, and practice in the field, in addition to an ability to communicate across disciplines to ensure an appropriate level of care to individuals and families in need. Graduates work in a wide array of human services professions to develop and manage programs and effect real change. Tomorrow s world houses an aging population that will continue to impact the social and economic fabric of our country over the next several decades. Our online program prepares today s workforce in a variety of fields, agencies, and institutions for an aging population. Through an interdisciplinary approach, students from a wide variety of backgrounds and interests advance their abilities and take their core knowledge into the field of gerontology in which they plan to begin or continue their careers. B.S. 120 credits Developmental Disabilities Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice Child Protection The Master of Human Services in Child Protection provides competency-based child protective services instruction aimed at closing the gap between groundlevel, on-the-job training and scientifically grounded best practices. It will develop the critical knowledge, values, and skills necessary for child protection professionals to respond effectively to complex problems confronting children and families in the child protective services system. M.H.S. 42 credits M.A. 36 credits Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice The Master of Science in Developmental Disabilities is designed to prepare service providers, administrators, case managers, coordinators, advocates, policy makers, and other professionals in the field of developmental disabilities to be leaders in community-based or government agencies. The M.S. in Developmental Disabilities emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach that includes human services, psychology, life span development, and public policy. It prepares students for professional endeavors in advocacy and support for the developmentally disabled or to continue their educational pursuits through related doctoral coursework. 10 Criminal Justice Law enforcement, crime prevention, and the justice system have become extremely complex and sophisticated. Our programs emphasize training and research to help students develop the multidisciplinary perspectives, skills, and knowledge bases needed by those involved in administering public safety and child protection. Students select from multiple concentrations ranging from behavioral sciences to organizational leadership and beyond to focus on their career and personal interests. M.S. 36 credits Ph.D. 60 credits Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice Conflict Analysis and Resolution Our students analyze the root causes of conflicts, not just their attributes, to be more reflective and creative in their interventions. We train the next generation of innovative scholars and practitioners in this diverse field, making sure they are equipped with the theoretical knowledge, skills, and real-world experience necessary to engage conflict at all levels and make a positive contribution to peace, justice, and collaborative processes. With our team of interdisciplinary faculty members from diverse cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds, students learn how to combine the theories and practical applications of such areas as gender, diversity, culture, environmental studies, the health sciences, computer and information sciences, human rights, social justice, and education. Students can choose from degree concentrations available in culture and society, health and society, information systems and society, coastal environment and society, education and society, institutional assessment, and other concentrations. 11 programs National Security Affairs National security affairs is one of the fastest growing professions in the private sector and also in federal, state, and local governments. Students in this program will build a core understanding of critical issues informing the field of national security today, including analysis of intelligence collection and the assessment of the threat of terrorism in the United States and throughout the world. Four distinct concentration tracks allow students to focus their studies in cyberterrorism and information security, criminal justice, international relations and global affairs, or homeland security. M.S. 33 credits College Student Affairs For those inspired by the energy, diversity, and academic innovation of the higher education community, this program prepares students for careers in today s educational institutions. Through hands-on assistantships, our students learn how to draw from the lessons of their own college experiences to help others meet their personal and educational goals on college campuses around the world. 12 clinical and training opportunities Our students do more than study innovative theories they gain real-world experience. They learn, first-hand, how it feels to positively impact their own lives and the lives of others. Our flexible and convenient programs encourage social advancement, resolve conflicts, promote healthy choices, and enhance relationships and lifestyles at home, in the workplace, and in academic institutions worldwide. Center for Assessment and Intervention Students from programs across the university train to function independently as professionals in a variety of mental health settings by enhancing their clinical and administrative competencies, as well as research and consultation experiences. Through its many research projects, in combination with the Center for Assessment and Intervention clinic, the Institute for the Study of Human Service, Health, and Justice has been able to serve various populations within the local community, such as children with autism and developmental disabilities, United States veterans, survivors of torture, and the homeless. (954) Family Therapy The Family Therapy Clinic at the Brief Therapy Institute supports one of the nation s largest programs in family therapy. Students not only learn the philosophical and theoretical ideas that inform our resource-based therapy techniques, they also become creative therapists, using empathy while working directly with local individuals, couples, and families. During practicum, students see their own clients and are supervised by licensed faculty members, in teams and individually. (954) Community Resolution Services At Community Resolution Services, our students practice conflict resolution and community building for families and organizations offering services such as training, mediation, facilitation, and conflict coaching. (954) Mailman Segal Center for Human Development The Mailman Segal Center for Human Development is a multidisciplinary research, demonstration, and training center in the fields of early childhood, family studies and autism across the life span. Located at the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center Village, the center provides direct service programs, professional training, clinical services, training, practicum and internship opportunities, community outreach, and research in human development. In partnership with NSU colleges, academic programs are offered in child development, applied behavior analysis, and autism. At the core of the Mailman Segal Center for Human Development are the parenting and early childhood programs, including the Parenting Place TM, which offers parent/child classes; the nationally accredited Family Center Infant/Toddler and Preschool Programs; the Autism Institute, which includes Starting Right, a parent-child early intervention program for children at risk for, or diagnosed with, autism; and the nationally accredited Baudhuin Preschool, in collaboration with Broward County schools, which serves children with autism spectrum disorders. The Unicorn Children s Foundation Clinic provides assessments for children, offers a specialized program for children with severe behavior challenges, and provides clinical opportunities for students. (954) Psychology Services Center The Psychology Services Center provides a comprehensive range of assessment, testing, and behavioral health treatment services to children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Serving the community for more than 30 years, the Psychology Services Center uses both established and innovative methods to help clients reach their goals. Our objective is to help clients achieve a better quality of life. Treatment is supervised by expert faculty members and psychologists, many of whom are nationally recognized for their groundbreaking research and development of stateof-the-art treatment programs.
