So why did a crowd cheer? This teenager lived for 15 days in a building that had fallen. The building fell in an earthquake. The quake hit Haiti in January While cleaning up, four workers heard a noise. They asked if anyone was there. They heard Daline s voice saying, Yes, yes. Then one worker saw Daline s dark hair. It was covered with dust and dirt. He and other workers went into action. They dug her out. Besides her leg, Daline was unhurt. More than 150,000 people died in this earthquake. It was one of several earthquakes in But the death toll in Haiti was very high. Buildings and homes in Haiti were not well built. The people were not prepared. Haiti had not had an earthquake in many years. How did Daline live? She was taking a shower as the earthquake hit. When her building fell, the walls of the shower protected her body. Luckily, she was young and healthy. Most people cannot live without water for more than about 72 hours. For days, Daline sipped the few drops of water in the bathroom. She may have had some soda too. Rescue workers pulled her out of the building at sunset. People around her cheered. Her rescue gave them hope.

His Tucson High School basketball team was playing rival Salpointe Catholic. Only 35 seconds remained on the clock. Joe made a tremendous two-handed slam dunk, and his team won the game. Fans rushed joyfully onto the court and tackled him. When they got up, something was wrong. Joe could not talk. He could not move the right side of his body. Doctors found that he had suffered a stroke. An artery in his neck was torn. Blood could not get to parts of his brain. Joe Kay always worked hard. He was the top student in his class. He played on both the volleyball and basketball teams. Stanford University had given him a volleyball scholarship. Now he would have to learn how to walk and talk again. The doctors thought Joe might not recover. He had suffered brain damage from the stroke. Joe worked hard to prove them wrong. He never gave up. He spent months in therapy. He learned to talk, think, and move again. Less than a year after his stroke, Joe started classes at the University of Arizona. He still had difficulty using his right hand and doing some mental tasks. He had high hopes, though. He still wanted to go to Stanford University. With hard work, he felt he could make it there. As he told a reporter, You have to deal with all of life s challenges.
