1 04/25/2012 Pitch Limits For High School Pitchers Alabama (1) A player may pitch in a maximum of 14 innings per week (Sunday through Saturday for regular season, tournament and playoff games). (2) A player may pitch in a maximum of seven innings in one day or over two consecutive calendar days, after which three consecutive calendar days of rest are required before being eligible to pitch again. A player s eligibility to pitch is not determined by the number of hours between pitching appearances. Alaska Arizona Arkansas California Colorado A pitcher shall not pitch more than ten (10) innings in a three (3) day period. No pitcher shall pitch more than 12 complete innings or 36 outs in a consecutive 36-hour period without two consecutive calendar days of rest. Rule: No player may pitch more than a total of twelve (12) innings during any consecutive 3-days period. In addition, no player may pitch more than eight (8) innings in one day. One (1) pitch will constitute a full inning outs and/or three appearances in a calendar week through the season A pitcher may appear in no more than 12 innings in any three consecutive calendar days. a. applies to regular season and playoffs b. one pitch equals an inning c. no exception for extra inning games A pitcher may not appear in more than 70 innings, exclusive of district, regional and state playoff games during the season. Conneticut The pitcher may not pitch more that (10) innings in any (3) consecutive calendar days. Delaware Florida Georgia A pitcher may not pitch more than 14 innings in a week (Monday through Saturday) and may never pitch more than 10 innings on two consecutive days. A pitcher may pitch a maximum of 10 innings on any one day. 2. Pitching restrictions: (a) Pitchers are limited to a maximum of ten (10) innings in a calendar day. (b) Pitchers are limited to a maximum of fourteen (14) innings in four (4) consecutive calendar days. Hawaii Idaho Illinois A pitcher shall not be permitted to pitch more than a total of seven innings in: (a) one game, (b) in two games the same day, or (c) a total of two games on two consecutive days. A player may not pitch more than nine innings in any one day, except, if a pitcher is pitching in the game when the score is tied at the end of the regulation period of play, the pitcher shall be permitted to continue pitching until he is relieved or the conclusion of the game, whichever occurs first. Sixteen innings will be the maximum total number of innings a pitcher may pitch in a given week. (For purpose of reference, Sunday through Saturday is a week.) B. A pitcher may not pitch more than a total of nine innings in any one day or on two consecutive calendar days. The ninth inning must be followed by two calendar days of rest. A game started on one calendar day, but is not completed until the next day, and is not a suspended game is to be considered played on the original calendar date the game started. C. If a pitcher pitches on any two consecutive days with the combined total greater than four innings, he will follow with two calendar days off for rest. Pitchers in baseball may pitch only nine innings in any one day. A pitcher is allowed a maximum accumulation of 12 innings during any 48 hour period. A) Pitching Limitations 1) For purposes of this rule, delivery of a minimum of one (1) pitch constitutes having pitched in one inning. 2) A pitcher may pitch in a maximum of nine (9) innings in one (1) day, but not more than fi fteen (15) innings in any seven (7) day period. 3) If a pitcher pitches in three (3) innings to fi ve (5) innings, in one (1) day, that pitcher shall have one (1) calendar day of rest beginning with the day following the fi rst day a pitch is thrown. 4) If a pitcher pitches in six (6) innings, that pitcher shall have two (2) calendar days of rest beginning with the day following the first day a pitch is thrown. 5) If a pitcher pitches in seven (7) or more innings in one day, that pitcher shall have three (3) calendar days of rest beginning with the day following the fi rst day a pitch is thrown. 6) This limitation affects regular season and postseason play The number of innings a pitcher may pitch during a calendar week (Sunday-Saturday) shall be determined by the principal BASEBALL PITCHING RULE -- The Baseball Committee has adopted the following pitching limitation rule. Violations of this rule results in the forfeiture of the game for the use of an ineligible player. (Adopted 8/90, Revised 6/96, 6/97) a. Throwing one pitch constitutes an inning pitched. b. A day of rest shall be a calendar day (not a part-day 24 hours later). c. A player who pitches in four or more innings per day may not pitch again until three calendar days have elapsed. (Example - a player pitches four or more innings on May 1st may not pitch again until May 5th). d. A player may pitch a maximum of ten (10) innings in one game and, having pitched four (4) or more innings in that game, may not pitch in another game until three (3) calendar days have elapsed. e. A player who pitches in more than one inning and less than four innings may not pitch again until one calendar day has elapsed. f. A pitcher who pitches in both games of a double header with the same team shall not pitch more than three innings per game. g. Two games in one day with different opponents -- If a pitcher pitches one inning or less in the first game they may pitch up to three innings in the second game. If a pitcher pitches over one inning they may not pitch in the second game. Page 2

3 h. A player may pitch in one inning on any number of consecutive days. i. The pitching rule applies to the entire season; pre-season, exhibition, tournament, and all other games. Violation in non-counting games may result in the teams' ineligibility for tournament play. (9/91) Advisory: A coach who has the best interest of a player in mind will remove that player once a total of pitches have been thrown. NOTES: In the regional final and state championship games, if a game is terminated before becoming an official game, the pitching rule is in effect and will remain until the last full inning. Example: A game is called for rain after one and a half innings of play. The pitching rule is in effect and will revert to the last full inning. A pitcher may pitch in a maximum of 14 innings in any seven calendar-day period and a maximum of 10 innings within a three calendar-day period. Does not use NFHS rules. A player may not pitch more than three consecutive days regardless of the outs pitched; and a player may not pitch for two calendar days following that in which he pitched his 30th out. A student may participate in no more than two games per school day. On any given day or in any three (3) consecutive days, a high school player shall not be permitted to pitch more than a total of 14 innings. A pitcher shall not pitch more than 17 innings per calendar week (Monday-Saturday). A pitcher shall not be allowed to pitch in more than 10 innings on any given day or during any consecutive three day period. No Baseball During the entire high school season, an athlete may pitch a maximum of 12 innings in a three-day period. A pupil who is a pitcher on a team that participates in baseball as a sanctioned sport during a baseball season shall not, during 4 consecutive days of that season, pitch more than 11 innings or more than 33 outs New Hampshire New Jersey New Mexico New York North Carolina Pitching Log 10 innings in 4 consecutive days. 12 innings in 72 hour period. A pitcher may pitch in a maximum of twelve (12) innings in one (1) day but no more than eighteen (18) innings in any six (6) consecutive day period. A player may pitch only 12 innings or make only three appearances as a pitcher in a one, two or three consecutive day tournament inning limit per pitcher over the course of three days Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Coarolina South Dakota A pitcher may pitch a full game of any length in a day. If he pitches less than six innings in a game, he may pitch in a second game that day, but he may not pitch more than a total of ten innings in the two games. (NOTE: A pitcher who pitches five innings in the first game and makes an appearance in the second game the same day shall not be eligible the next day.) An appearance during an inning shall count as a full inning. A pitcher shall not pitch more than 12 innings on three consecutive days. A player may pitch in a maximum of nine (9) innings in one (1) calendar day, but not more than fourteen (14) innings in a Calendar Week (Sunday through Saturday). Delivery of one (1) pitch constitutes having pitched in any inning. If an inning is played in part on two (2) calendar days, delivery of one (1) pitch in that inning in each of those calendar days constitutes having pitched in two (2) innings. If he pitches in three (3) innings or less in one (1) calendar day, no rest is required; however, no player may pitch more than three (3) consecutive three-inning days. If he pitches three (3) consecutive three-inning days, he must have one (1) calendar day of rest. If he pitches in four (4) or five (5) innings in one (1) calendar day, he must have two (2) calendar days of rest. If he pitches in six (6) or more innings in one (1) calendar day, he must have three (3) calendar days of rest. A pitcher may not pitch more than thirty (30) outs in any three consecutive calendar days. Pitchers are limited to 10 innings pitched during any 3 consecutive day period. No Sanctioned Baseball The following is an alternative 1. A pitcher may not pitch more than a total of 106 pitches in any one day or 212 pitches in any seven day period. No new inning may begin after 89 pitches. 2. Each outing shall be followed by required rest based on the following number of pitches. The REST period begins the day after the outing. a) 27 to 44 pitches requires one day of rest b) pitches requires two days of rest c) pitches requires three days of rest d) 89 or more pitches requires four days of rest 3.If a pitcher pitches 26 or fewer pitches in one day, he may pitch the next day an amount not to exceed 44 total in the two consecutive days. He must then take one day of rest. 4.Pitchers pitching 27 or more pitches in game one of double header may not pitch in game two. (double header means two games in same day) Tennessee No player may pitch more than 10 innings on consecutive days. After one day s rest, a pitcher may again pitch as many as 10 innings on consecutive days. If a player pitched at all Page 4

5 in any inning, the inning shall count as one full inning pitched. If a player is pitching in a game that is tied at the end of regulation play, he may finish such tie game regardless of the number of innings, provided he did not pitch the previous day or in the first game of a double-header on the same day. Texas Utah Vermont A pitcher may pitch one game each day in an unlimited number of innings. If he pitches in more than one game during a day, he will be limited to a total of ten innings each day. A player may pitch a maximum of 14 innings per calendar week. b. VPA Pitching Limitation Rule (6-1-6) regular season and tournament) is based on the number of pitches thrown in a game. The pitch count is based on pitches thrown for strikes; balls; foul balls; and outs. Not warm up pitches allowed before each inning or those warm ups allowed by the umpire in case of injury or game delay. The number of pitches is based on the level of pitching. Specific rest periods are in place when a pitcher reaches a high threshold of pitches delivered in a day. LEVEL PITCHES ALLOWED PER DAY Varsity 120 JV 110 Freshmen 110 Middle Level 85 The rest periods required during the 2012 regular and tournament season are listed below: VARSITY: If a pitcher throws 76 or more pitches in a day, three (3) calendar days of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws pitches in a day, two (2) calendar days of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws pitches in a day one (1) calendar day of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws 1-25 pitches in a day no calendar day of rest is required before pitching again. A calendar day means that if a pitcher throws 76 pitches on Tuesday that player may not pitch again until Saturday. If they throw 76 pitches on Saturday that player may not pitch again until Wednesday. The starting time of the game NO longer matters in the calculation of when a pitcher is eligible to pitch again. JV/FRESHMEN: If a pitcher throws 66 or more pitches in a day, three (3) calendar days or rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws pitches in a day, two (2) calendar days of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws pitches in a day one (1) calendar day of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws 1-25 pitches in a day no calendar day of rest is required before pitching again. MIDDLE LEVEL: If a pitcher throws 56 or more pitches in a day, three (3) calendar days or rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws pitches in a day, two (2) calendar days of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws pitches in a day one (1) calendar day of rest must be observed. If a pitcher throws 1-19 pitches in a day no calendar day of rest is required before pitching again. A pitcher at any level who reaches the pitch count limit in the middle of an at bat will be allowed to finish that hitter. This only applies to maximum limitations. i.e. varsity 120, JV/Freshman 110, middle level 85. c. VPA Pitching Limitation Procedure (6-1-6) applies to varsity, jayvee and freshman games: Page 5

6 1) The pitch count chart is to be presented to the opposing coach BEFORE the game. During the game pitch counts will be confirmed at the end of every half inning. Any discrepancy will be reported to the umpire. 2) At game's conclusion, the VPA pitching form will be signed by the coaches or designated representative. 3) Schools (Coaches/A.D.) have the responsibility to maintain this pitching chart form. A hard copy must be available upon VPA request. Virginia Washington A pitcher shall not pitch in more than ten (10) innings in any two consecutive calendar days. When a pitcher pitches four (4) innings or more in a contest which began and ended on the same day or in a day, the pitcher shall not pitch again until two (2) calendar days have elapsed. West Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming A pitcher is required to take two calendar days of rest, after pitching a total of seven innings over any three-day period, unless the following additional inning provision applies: A pitcher may pitch three additional consecutive innings for a total of 10 over a three-day period, provided the three additional innings occur during an extra inning period of a game which immediately follows the pitcher s personal seventh inning (including the third out) of that three-day period.
