1 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION FOR SLIDING WINDOW using INSTALLATION CLIPS OR FRAME SCREWS Installation Instructions for Typical Masonry Wall Construction. These instructions were developed and tested for use with masonry wall construction in a wall system designed to manage water. These instructions are not to be used with any other construction method. Installation instructions for use with other construction methods or multiple units may be obtained from Pella Corporation or your local Pella retailer. Building designs, construction methods, building materials, and site conditions unique to your project may require an installation method different from these instructions and/or additional care. Determining the appropriate installation method is the responsibility of you, your architect, or construction professional. YOU WILL NEED TO SUPPLY: Cedar or Impervious shims/spacers (12 to20) Closed cell foam backer rod/sealant backer (12 to 30 ft.) High quality exterior grade polyurethane or silicone sealant (1 tube per window) SEALANT Great Stuff Window and Door Insulating Foam Sealant by the Dow Chemical Company or equivalent low pressure polyurethane window and door foam - DO NOT use high pressure or latex foams Installation clips 1-1/4" or longer concrete screws 2- screws for frame screw installation FOR MULLING APPLICATIONS ONLY: Foam tape Mullion plugs (2) I bar joining connector Installation will require two or more persons for safety reasons. 2 1 PREPARE THE OPENING A. Prepare the window opening as required to allow the window to fit into the opening. B. Verify the opening is plumb, level, and square. Fix any problems with the opening before proceeding. 1B 1B C. Verify that the window(s) will fit into the opening. D. Install and level sill spacers. Place 1" wide by 1/4" thick spacers on the bottom of the window opening 1/4" from each side. Spacers are also required at the interlocker. Add shims as necessary to ensure the spacers are level. Once level, attach spacers and shims to prevent movement. Note: Improper placement of shims or spacers may result in bowing the bottom of the window. 1D 2 PREPARE THE WINDOW FOR INSTALLATION A. Remove packing materials from window(s). DO NOT remove shipping spacers. The shipping spacers will help keep the window square during installation. If transoms are to be attached (mulled) to the top of the units, perform MULLING WINDOWS TOGETHER on the back of this sheet. PERFORM THIS PROCESS BEFORE INSTALLING CLIPS. For installation using screws through the jamb, go to INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS USING FRAME SCREWS on the back of this sheet. For installations using installation clips, use the following steps. Two or more people will be required for the following steps. B. Install installation clips. Slide clips into the window frame sill, placing one clip 6" from each end of the unit and no more than 16" on center. Note: When applying clips to mulled units, clips should be placed 6" from each end and 6" on each side of the mullion joint. Add clips where the spacing between clips is more than 16". head 2C 2D jamb C. Slide clips into the window frame jamb s. Use the same spacing as step 2B. sill 2C D. 3 3 SETTING AND FASTENING THE WINDOW A. Slide the window into the opening, placing the bottom of the window on the spacers at the bottom of the opening. Center the window between the sides of the opening to allow clearance for shimming, and insert one 1-1/4" or longer concrete screw into one hole in each of the top clips. This will hold the window in place while shimming it plumb and square. B. Place shims 1" from the bottom and top of the window between the window and the sides of the opening. Adjust the shims as required to plumb and square the window in the opening. Also shim at the transition bar of multiple sash units. Note: Do not shim above the window or in the space between the spacers at the bottom of the window. DO NOT OVER SHIM. 3C C. Fasten the window to the opening by driving 1-1/4" or longer concrete screws into the pre-punched holes in the clips. D. Remove the plastic spacers located between the bottom of the vent sash and the frame sill. 3B E. Check window operation. Open and close the window a few times to check for proper operation. Close and lock the window. Note: If there are any problems with the operation of the window, recheck shim locations and adjust for plumb and square. 4 SEALING THE WINDOW TO THE EXTERIOR WALL CLADDING Note: When applying siding, brick veneer or other exterior finish materials, leave adequate space between the window frame and the material for sealant. Refer to the illustration that corresponds to your finish material. Not allowing adequate space or not using backer rod may cause the sealant to break down prematurely and allow water to infiltrate. BRICK & BLOCK STUCCO & BLOCK BLOCK. min. A. Insert closed cell foam backer rod into the space around the window. This should provide at least a clearance between the backer rod and the exterior face of the window. Note: adds shape and depth for the sealant line. min. B. Apply a bead of high quality exterior grade sealant to the entire perimeter of the window. 4A C. Shape, tool and clean excess sealant. When finished, the sealant should be the shape of an hourglass. Note: This method creates a more flexible sealant line capable of expanding and contracting. 4B

4 5 INTERIOR SEAL Caution: Ensure use of low expansion polyurethane window and door installation foams and strictly follow the foam manufacturer s recommendations for application. Use of high expansive foams or improper application of the foam may cause the window to bow and hinder operation. A. Apply insulation foam. From the interior, insert the nozzle of the applicator approximately 1" deep into the space between the window and the rough opening and apply a 1" deep bead of foam. This will allow room for expansion of the foam and will minimize squeeze out. Allow the foam to cure completely (usually 8 to 24 hours) before proceeding to the next step. Note: DO NOT completely fill the space from the back of the fin to the interior face of the opening. Over filling the space may cause the window frame to bow. 5A B. Check window operation by opening and closing the window. Note: If the window does not operate correctly, check to make sure it is still plumb, level and that the sides are not bowed. If the sides are bowed, remove the foam with a serrated knife and repeat the above steps. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS USING FRAME SCREWS Note: For windows with frame width greater than 48, install installation clips on the head and sill. Install one clip 6 from each end, then install additional clips not more than 16 on center. A. Insert the window from the exterior of the building and center the window between the sides of opening to allow clearance for shimming. B. Insert shims between the window and the sides of the rough opening at the top 2 anchor hole locations in the window sides. Remove the plastic spacers located between the bottom of the vent sash and the frame sill. Note: Unlock the window and open the vent sash to access the anchor hole on the vent side of the frame. B C Shim 2- screw C. Fasten the window at the top of the opening by driving 2- long screws (provided) through the top 2 holes in the window sides, and into the wall members. D. Plumb and square the window. Insert shims, as necessary, between the window and the sides of the rough opening at the anchor hole locations in the window sides. (DO NOT over shim). E. Fasten the window in the opening by driving the 2- long screws (provided) through the holes in the window sides, through the shims and into the wall members. E Shim 2- screw F. Check the window operation by unlocking, opening and closing the sash. If the window does not operate smoothly, check and adjust the shims. G. Insert jamb hole plugs (provided). H. Proceed to Step 4. 5 MULLING WINDOWS TOGETHER Note: If transoms are to be attached (mulled) to the top of the units, perform this process before installing fins. A. Apply two (2) strips of foam tape across the top of the window frame with one on the interior rib and one on the exterior rib. Note: The tape must extend the full width of the window frame. B. Place a foam plug at each end of the top between the exterior rib and the joining mullion. C. Position and align the second unit with the first unit. D. Start the I bar joining connector from one end and drive it to the full width of the units. Note: A rubber mallet may be used to drive the I bar joining connector into position. The bead of sealant should extend from the center of the mullion joint to the exterior of the unit, covering the foam plug. FINISH The interior and exterior frame and sash are protected by a powder coat baked-on factory finish that requires no painting. Clean this surface with mild soap and water. Stubborn stains and deposits may be removed with mineral spirits. DO NOT use abrasives. DO NOT scrape or use tools that might damage the surface. Use of inappropriate solvents, brickwash or cleaning chemicals will cause adverse reactions with window and door materials and voids the Limited Warranty. This information is also available at IMPORTANT NOTICE Because all construction must anticipate some water infiltration, it is important that the wall system be designed and constructed to properly manage moisture. Pella Corporation is not responsible for claims or damages caused by anticipated and unanticipated water infiltration; deficiencies in building design, construction and maintenance; failure to install Pella products in accordance with Pella installation instructions; or the use of Pella products in wall systems which do not allow for proper management of moisture within the wall systems. The determination of the suitability of all building components, including the use of Pella products, as well as the design and installation of flashing and sealing systems are the responsibility of the Buyer or User, the architect, contractor, installer, or other construction professional and are not the responsibility of Pella. Pella products should not be used in barrier wall systems which do not allow for proper management of moisture within the wall systems, such as barrier Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems, (EIFS) (also known as synthetic stucco) or other non-water managed systems. Except in the states of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, Pella makes no warranty of any kind and assumes no responsibility for Pella windows and doors installed in barrier wall systems. In the states listed above, the installation of Pella products in barrier wall or similar systems must be in accordance with Pella installation instructions.
