4 1 Introduction 1.1 Overview This Microsoft Lync Server 2010 solution architecture manual contains possible configurations that can be used to architect Lync 2010 infrastructures ranging from 500 to 25,000 users. Wireless mobility controller and access point recommendations are provided for the smaller configurations. Samples in this manual are intended to serve as a blueprint or example for organizations whose requirements are similar. Each organization s requirements can differ significantly though. For a configuration sized to your specific requirements, please contact your Dell representative. Further sizing information is available at Dell TechCenter. 1.2 Hardware Sample solutions described in this manual use the following Dell equipment: Dell PowerEdge R320 Dell PowerEdge R420 Dell PowerEdge R620 Dell PowerEdge M620 Dell PowerEdge R720 Dell PowerEdge M1000e Dell Force10 S55 Dell Force10 S60 Dell Force10 S50v Dell PowerConnect M6348 Dell PowerConnect 6248 Dell PowerConnect TM 7024P Dell PowerConnect TM 7048P Dell PowerConnect TM W-3400 Mobility Controller Dell PowerConnect TM W-3600 Mobility Controller Dell PowerConnect TM W-6000M3 Mobility Controller (using a PowerConnect W-6000 chassis) Dell PowerConnect TM W-AP105 Access Point Dell PowerConnect TM W-AP135 Access Point Dell EqualLogic TM PS4100XV Dell EqualLogic PS6100XV Dell EqualLogic PS6110X 1.3 Virtualization Those configurations that employ hardware virtualization assume a platform approved through Microsoft s Server Virtualization Validation Program and are deployed consistent with Microsoft s support guidelines for running Microsoft Lync Server 2010 with virtualization. In the lab, the virtualization platforms used were Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vsphere. 4

5 For the Active System 800v configuration at the end of this document, the architecture is provided after results were obtained on the infrastructure using VMware ESXi 5.1 and all the other server, storage, and networking components. 1.4 Disclaimer These sizing recommendations are based on sizing results obtained from Microsoft s Stress and Performance Tool for Lync Each deployment s workload may differ in specific requirements that govern sizing and architecture. The reference architectures present a suggested distribution of virtual machines on physical servers, but other combinations of distribution are possible. The configurations provided in this document provide server and storage sizing guidance and do not provide recommendations for client-side devices. Recommendations for Dell PowerConnect W-Series wireless mobility controllers and access points are provided for the user configurations. These can be replicated or expanded for the larger scenarios provided for user configurations after working with Dell Infrastructure Consulting, as needed. Dell PowerConnect W- Series is qualified with Lync Server and is listed under the qualified networking equipment as part of the Microsoft Unified Communications Open Interoperability Program. Dell provides further details of wireless infrastructure needed at enterprises in these Validated Reference Designs. 5

For details on VoIP inter-operability with a PBX, VoIP gateway, SIP trunk or other telephony hardware, please contact Dell Infrastructure Consulting. To minimize datacenter footprint, blade servers are used in this architecture. However, if rack servers are preferred, then the M620 blades can be replaced by equivalent R620 servers, with similar CPU and memory. This solution s server, storage or networking design is highly-available and it is recommended that both storage controllers be used for the storage arrays, and the switches be used in a HA-pair. This Edge Server user model leverages the Microsoft recommendation of 8 cores per users and tolerates a single server failure. 24 8 Dell Active Infrastructure Dell Active Infrastructure is a family of converged infrastructure solutions that combine servers, storage, networking, and infrastructure management into an integrated and optimized system that provides general purpose virtualized resources. Active Infrastructure leverages Dell innovations including blade servers that use converged LAN/SAN networking that can be easily deployed and operated. This integrated solution accelerates Microsoft Lync Server 2010 delivery and reliability. On Dell Active Infrastructure, Lync Server 2010 ignores the individual hardware configuration of the storage, server, and networks, and for this reason, this design presents the individual storage volume, specific networks, and VM configuration without specifics on the servers, switches, or storage used. Please refer to the Active Infrastructure documentation for information about servers, storage and switches ,000 Users on Active System 800v As a member of Dell Active Infrastructure family, the Active System 800v solution, is a converged infrastructure solution that has been designed and validated by Dell Engineering based on VMware vsphere 5.1. This reference architecture is for small to mid-size Lync deployments and can support instant messaging, presence, and audio-video conferencing for 5,000 Lync users. The solution leverages Active System s server, storage and networking design for a Lync Server deployment, and benefits from that design s high-availability and reliability. The architecture does not consume all of Active System 800v s hardware resources. Therefore, this Lync Server design can be deployed alongside other workloads on the Active System. To add other Lync features, such as VoIP inter-operability with a PBX, VoIP gateway, SIP trunk or other telephony hardware, please contact Dell Infrastructure Consulting. Recommendations are also provided for a mobility controller and wireless access points so that users are able to use Lync over Wi-Fi within the premises. For further information on wireless access setup, please refer to these PowerConnect W-series Validated Reference Designs. 8.2 Solution Requirements Targeted number of users Up to 5,000 High availability Yes 65 Virtualization Full Number of sites 1 Not included in this solution Exchange servers for unified messaging Voice over IP (VOIP) Reverse proxy 8.3 Recommended Solution Server Configuration Microsoft Lync Server Version Enterprise Edition of Lync Server Designed to tolerate failure of any one physical machine. vsphere high availability should be configured. 24
