Exchange Report Spring Semester 2015 NEOMA Business School Management Grande Ecole Program Kelly Lo (Year 3, Accounting & Finance)
Part I Monthly Activity Log January I arrived at Paris on 4 th January and took a taxi reserved by school to NEOMA Business School, Campus Rouen. After arrival, staff and student helpers there helped me to finish all the check-in procedures including registration for student account, bank account, housing insurance and dormitory check-in. Before classes which started on 7 th, there was a one-day French intensive course to equip exchange students with some basic phrases. I met mostly exchange students during classes in school because they were taught in English and French students would rarely take English courses. I joined a trip organized by CultureCo to Paris Disneyland during a weekend. It was very convenient since CultureCo arranged transportation from the School to the Park and return trip. It was also a great opportunity to know other exchange students on the trip. February I got adapted to the pace of the life in France and I went to Iceland. I was so lucky that I had a chance to see the northern light. It was fantastic! There is a long winter break at the end of February and I decided to travel to Italy and Austria. I went to Milan, Rome, Venice, Vienna, Salzburg and Hallstatt, one of the most beautiful small towns in Europe. March Demi-semester 1 classes were ended in March and this month was filled with project deadlines and examinations. After examinations, there were a holiday and I went to London by taking Eurostar. It was still cold in London.
April Since I only have two classes remaining for the second demi-semester, I had plenty of free time for travelling. I went to Northern Europe with my friends. It was an11-day trip to Finland, Norway and Sweden. That late April till early May is the high time seeing the tulips in Netherland, so I went to Amsterdam with my friends on King s day. It is a National holiday that celebrate King s Willem- Alexander birthday. In the streets, canals, parks and everywhere in between, the city is bursting with orange as Amsterdammers enjoy the biggest street party of the year! May I had a short yet sweet trip to Eastern Europe in the early May and things were a lot cheaper there. After came back to Rouen, I joined the Color me rad 5K. It was a great opportunity for me to know more about the culture of local French community. June Examinations were held in the beginning of the month. I grasped the time to meet my friends in Rouen and say goodbye. Then I took the June 4 th flight back home.
Part II General Information Visa Procedure To apply for the student visa, you have to 1) Make an appointment on the online system on the Campus France Office and Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau webpage 2) Send an to to apply for a timeslot for academic interview. Then you need to wait for the reply of patiently. The academic interview lasts for 15 minutes and you will be asked a few easy questions. Then you are required to submit all the necessary documents at the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau. You may refer to the following website for more information: Orientation Activities On the first day of arrival, you will firstly go to the Chateau to finish the registration process and get your student card. Then you will get your dorm key and student helpers from Culture Connection will help you to finish the check-in process. After settling down your luggage, they will also drive you to Carrefour, a big supermarket nearby, to shop for necessities. On the second day, you will join a Welcome Meeting which introduces some important information on campus rules, courses and campus life. In the afternoon, there is a Forum which you can set up a French bank account at BNP Paribus and get civil liability insurance from SMENO. International services & Activities Karolina is the one who in charge of all exchange students. She is nice and friendly. If you have any difficulties, you can contact her and ask for help. Culture Connection is the International team and always organizes activities to link exchange students together. For example, it will organize welcoming party in downtown and trips to nearby cities. You may join if you are interested.
Accommodation There are some choices for accommodation. I lived in Ango, which is 10-minute walk from Campus, since it offers single room with shared bathroom and toilet with the neighbor next door, I could have a higher privacy. Course Registration You will receive about course registration from Karolina in November. More details like course schedule and course syllabus are included in the . You will enroll courses through online system within an assigned date. Once you have confirmed your enrollment, you will not be able to change your choices until add-drop period. In the add-drop period, you can send to school to add, drop and swap courses. Teaching and Assessment Methods FI42043E-2-RN Financial Analysis FINA elective, 3 credits This course includes a group project and a final examination. You will learn about EBITDA, the ratios and the balance sheet for the first few lesson and calculations for the next few lessons. The final examination is only composed of MC questions. FI42052E-2-RN International Finance FINA elective, 3 credits This course is about currency exchange rates and products such as swaps and options used in international trades. There is a spot quiz and a final exam only. Workload is not heavy at all but you have to pay attention in class and jot down notes to have a better understanding of the slides. Examination was not hard as long as you have revised the examples. FI42041E-3-RN Derivative products Fina3204, 3 credits The course consists of a mid-term and a final examination. There are case studies throughout the course. Notes and teaching slides will be uploaded before class. Workload is not heavy since all of them are classwork so you only have to revise them at home.
GS42024E-1-RN Intercultural Communication SA Common core, 3 credits This course includes a group presentation and a written final examination. I recommend this course since you will learn different cultures from various cultural dimensions. Not much work to do. GS42033E-2-RN Critical Thinking in Responsible Environments SA Common core, 3 credits This course is taught by Professor RABASSO Javier. Basically we learn different cultures from the sharing of other students. We have to make a short individual presentation (5 minutes) every class and a long group presentation (1 hour) regarding global economic, cultural and environmental issues. We also have to write a 2000-word essay and take the final examination which asks about your view of the course. Workload is not as heavy as it seems but you will get a valuable chance to work with classmates from many different countries. Sports facilities There is a gym 15 minutes away for 50 euros a month but I did not go. Enjoy the nature and go for a run instead. There is a ping pong room next to Ango and I went there with my friends quite a lot Cost / Expense Items HK$ Flight ticket(return, Air France) 12,000 Accommodation (Ango) 18,000 Living expenses 20,000 Travel expenses 60,000 Miscellaneous(Visa, Insurance etc) 2,000 Total 11,200
Travel log Month January February March April May Destination France ( Paris, Caen) Iceland United Kingdom ( London, Oxford, Cambridge) Italy (Venice, Rome, Milan, Vienna) Austria (Vienna, Salzburg, Hallstatt) Finland (Helsinki, Rovaniemi, Oulu, Turku) Sweden(Stockholm) Norway (Oslo, Bergen) Netherlands ( Amsterdam, Rotterdam) Belgium(Brussels) Luxembourg France(Lille) Germany(Berlin) Czech Republic(Prague, Karlovy Vary) Poland(Krakow) Hungary(Budapest) Social Clubs & Networking Opportunities There are social clubs for you to join but membership fees are required so it is recommended to join activities organized by Culture Connection. Health and Safety There are pharmacies both near campus and in downtown. Tap water in France and Europe is hard water, it is drinkable but you can choose to buy bottle waters or a water filter in supermarkets. For safety, although there were cases of robbery happened at night before, Rouen is quite a safe place generally. If you go back home at late night, you would better stick to a group of people. Watch out for your mobile phone when you are using it in crowded street. Food There are two cafeterias on campus and they open until 5pm. Meals are often below 4 euros. There is a bakery and small supermarket near the BNP bank. You can buy cooking ingredients in supermarkets. The most popular and biggest one is Carrefour. You can take a 10-minute bus F2 to reach there (stop La Vatine - Centre Commercial ). There are also Sunday morning market and wet market in downtown.
Transportation You can take buses (mainly T1 and F2) to get to downtown and train station. There is also a night bus (N2) that operates in late hours. It is not recommended to buy monthly bus card. A more economical option is to buy a 10-ticket card ( Jeune 10 voyages ) at youth price. You can buy it at the ticket machine next to the bus station. It is also recommended to buy a Jeune Carte in the train station at the beginning. You can enjoy 25%-50% discounts in train tickets within France. Climate Winter this year was relatively warm and it snowed once only. Temperatures ranged from 0 to 10 degree Celsius. Weather started getting warmer in April and temperatures raised to around 25 degree Celsius in June. It is better to bring some summer clothes. Communication Knowing basic French would make you easier to adapt the life in Rouen since the staff in supermarket and train station does not speak English. I bought a phone card in Free company with monthly data plan (20 euros for 2GB per month). In dormitory, wifi provider is Wifirst, which costs 20 euro per month. It is not user friendly as the wifi can only be connected to one device, which means when your mobile is connecting to the wifi, your notebook will be unable to connect to the Internet. Cautionary Measures Class schedules and classroom may change without notice. You need to double check before class. The exam timetable will be announced in the middle of demi-semester so it is better to book the airline and hostel after the announcement Must-bring Items Passport and translated birth certificate with copies Cash & ATM card Medicines Umbrella Laptop Mobile phone Chargers and adaptors Winter and summer clothes
